What is prior authorization?

A prior authorization, also called a “PA,” is when your insurance provider requires a clinical evaluation before they agree to cover treatment. Sometimes, an insurance company may not cover a prescription until an evaluation by a doctor or other clinician determines that the treatment is medically necessary.

If your prescription requires prior authorization, your pharmacy will usually let your Talkiatry clinician know so they can get your insurance company the info they need. Since prior authorization can delay filling your prescription, we recommend that you ask your doctor for any renewals you’re aware of as soon as you can. If you run into complications with prior authorizations or your insurance does not cover some of your medications, let your provider know.
