Elizabeth Shaffer, MD

Dr. Mark Varela is a board-certified psychiatrist joining Talkiatry directly out of residency. He focuses primarily on medication management, often accompanied by brief cognitive, motivational, or supportive therapy. He may request that you also meet with a therapist regularly for your benefit. Dr. Varela received his medical degree and general psychiatric residency training both from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in West Texas. He treats young adults and adults with a wide variety of mental health concerns, including ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD.

Dr. Crystal Salcido was raised in small Texas border towns, shaping her commitment to serving underserved communities. She later moved to the Northeast for college and medical school, completing her medical training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. She completed her intern year at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and her residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Salcido has provided care across acute inpatient units, medical units, and emergency departments.

Dr. Salcido practices with a patient-centered philosophy grounded in compassion, collaboration, and meaningful therapeutic connection. She believes it is essential that patients feel heard, supported, and actively involved in their treatment decisions.

Her process begins with a comprehensive assessment of each patient’s history, goals, and background to guide individualized treatment. Dr. Salcido strives to create a warm, relaxed, and welcoming environment that fosters openness and comfort.

Dr. Onah Uwagbai is a board-certified psychiatrist who earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatry residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident at the Kansas City VA hospital and was recognized for Excellence in Scholarship. Most recently, she worked at the North Texas VA Healthcare System, caring for individuals with treatment-resistant depression and complex psychiatric needs.

Dr. Uwagbai has a passion for supporting individuals with mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, and women’s mental health. She believes healing is best achieved through compassion, collaboration, and respect. Patients can expect a warm, supportive environment where they feel heard and understood, with treatment tailored to their unique history and goals.

Dr. Uwagbai begins with a comprehensive evaluation to understand each patient’s needs and then develops an individualized treatment plan. She draws on evidence-based practices, including expertise in complex cases, and may incorporate both therapy and medication management. Her goal is to empower patients to take an active role in their care while fostering resilience, stability, and long-term wellness.

Dr. Anne Rohs is board certified in both adult and geriatric psychiatry and has practiced psychiatry for over 10 years. She has extensive experience treating critically ill patients in hospital settings. This experience allowed her to hone skills necessary to care for individuals with complex psychiatric illnesses complicated by medical conditions. Dr. Rohs' approach to care involves providing a consistent, empathic, non-judgmental space to develop and attain shared treatment goals. She is committed to developing a partnership that is always respectful of patients' points of view, and she utilizes this knowledge to inform treatment plans that are safe, effective, and agreeable to patients. At the same time, she is sensitive to financial or insurance coverage factors that may impact treatment. After completing residency training at Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Rohs was invited to serve an additional year as Senior Chief Resident for its adult psychiatry residency training program. She spent the next year as a fellow in Geriatric Psychiatry before her appointment as an attending physician on Montefiore's acute psychiatric inpatient unit. During her training years, Dr. Rohs made several trips to Uganda to serve as an attending physician with the Doctors for Global Health Project. Dr. Rohs subsequently transferred to Bronx Psychiatric Center (BPC), where she treated inpatients and outpatients suffering from severe mental disorders. At BPC, she expanded her knowledge base and became an expert in advanced psychopharmacology. Dr. Rohs also spent time prior to joining Talkiatry as an attending physician at NYU Langone Hospital. Dr. Rohs specializes in treating a variety of psychiatric conditions including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and dementia. She is attuned to the direct and indirect mental health impact of the pandemic and its aftermath on patients of all ages. Dr. Rohs does not usually treat ADHD patients. For the small number of patients she treats who have ADHD, Dr. Rohs requires comprehensive testing, multiple follow ups, and a full medical workup before confirming a diagnosis to ensure appropriateness and safety of chosen treatment.Dr. Anne Rohs is board certified in both adult and geriatric psychiatry and has been in practice for over ten years. Dr. Zhou is a board-certified psychiatrist who has more than 4 years of experience practicing in various clinical settings with an emphasis on mental health care in outpatient settings. She practices a holistic approach to developing an individualized plan to work toward a patient's goals. Dr. Zhou is experienced in treating depression, bipolar spectrum disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety, and other related psychiatric disorders. Dr. Zhou received her medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and completed her adult psychiatry residency training at LSU Health Shreveport. Dr. Zhou's background and experiences have broadened her understanding of cultural stigmas and the relationship it plays in psychiatric care. She incorporates a multitude of treatment modalities such as supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness practices as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy. Dr. Zhou recognizes the value of a multifaceted approach to wellbeing and may recommend treatment modalities that are complementary to medication management.

Dr. Meena Shah is a board-eligible psychiatrist and has been practicing for over 16 years. She specializes in child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Shah's practice focuses on medication management in conjunction with supportive and emotionally focused therapy in 30-minute follow up visits. Dr. Shah believes in the importance of building a therapeutic relationship with her patients and families to help achieve their emotional goals. Dr. Shah completed her residency training through Richmond University Medical Center with NY Medical College and completed her fellowship at Brookdale University Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Shah has extensive experience with the child and adolescent population and worked with foster care programs as well as juvenile residential facility programs .Dr. Shah served as Children's Associate Medical Director at Directions for Living Mental Health Clinic and went on to become Medical Director at Sequel Care of Florida. In addition, Dr. Shah also received her Master's degree in Hyperbaric Medicine. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Florida with a major in psychology. Dr. Shah's primary clinical focus has been treating children, and young adults with ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety, and helping them establish coping skills to overcome any life obstacle.
