My presence at Talkiatry brings my career full circle and back to my greatest joy as a psychiatrist: working directly with patients one-on-one to help them integrate the complexity of their feelings, beliefs, and personal reality in the context of an increasingly complicated world around them. I take a compassionate, individualized, and pragmatic approach to treatment, beginning in the first visit with a full history and discussion with the patient of their symptoms, challenges, and goals. Follow-up visits are tailored to the patient's evolving needs and combine shared insights and tools such as medications and behavioral practices to support them as I guide them on their unique journey toward their best life, on their terms.

My qualifications include a B.A. in biology from Harvard University and an M.D. from Tufts School of Medicine. I completed psychiatry residencies at Mt. Sinai and Brown and am board certified in both Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. My four decades of practice have exposed me to an eclectic range of cultures, ethnicities, and pathologies in a wide variety of settings, from solo practice to regional medical centers to academic institutions. I am trained in both adult and child & adolescent psychiatry, with a focus on the diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, and ADHD. I emphasize a holistic approach, combining medication management and psychotherapy, and I utilize principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and supportive psychotherapy. This method is supported by research indicating improved patient outcomes.

I received my bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in French from The University of Central Florida. I completed medical school at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a General Psychiatry residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. My professional experience includes working in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, consult-liaison psychiatry, outpatient clinics, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and emergency rooms. This broad range of experience allows me to provide comprehensive, individualized care to patients at all stages of life.

Patients can anticipate a thorough initial evaluation during their first visit with me. I conduct a comprehensive assessment to understand the patient's symptoms, history, and personal circumstances. This session sets the foundation for collaboratively developing an individualized treatment plan focused on the patient's specific needs and goals.

I chose the field of psychiatry with the goal of empowering my patients and equipping them with the skills and tools to improve their mental health. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where patients feel heard and supported, and to destigmatize mental illness and normalize seeking help when struggling. My passion for psychiatry stems from a deep interest in connecting with people and understanding their unique stories.

I believe the patient-physician relationship should be a partnership, built on trust, empathy, and shared goals. I encourage honesty, collaboration, and open communication, and believe there are no wrong questions, and your voice matters. I encourage questions and feedback and tailor care to each person's goals, comfort level, and pace. I want to get to know the whole person, not just their symptoms. Together, I work with patients to create a personalized and thoughtful treatment plan that may include therapy, lifestyle support, and/or medication, always with room to adjust based on your evolving needs and preferences.

I specialize in treating complex psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, and insomnia. As a proponent of holistic care, I integrate psychotherapy into medication management and emphasize lifestyle modifications and evidence-based integrative medicine. New patients receive comprehensive evaluations to rule out medical causes of symptoms, followed by tailored treatment plans combining therapy, medication, and lifestyle adjustments. Follow-up visits focus on symptom management through supportive, brief dynamic, or cognitive behavioral therapy, with frequent appointments until stabilization is achieved. I am committed to collaborative, patient-centered care that addresses both mental and physical well-being.

I am board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). I earned my medical degree from Kansas City University and completed my psychiatry residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. During medical school, I pursued advanced training as an Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine fellow. As a resident, I served as Chief Academic Resident and earned accolades such as Intern of the Year and Outstanding Educator of the Year twice consecutively. I have presented case studies and quality improvement projects at national conferences, including the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Association for Academic Psychiatry.

A combat veteran, I served in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour in Iraq, and was honored with the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a Certificate of Commendation for exemplary leadership.

I offer an integration of medication management and various psychotherapy. I am certified in supportive psychotherapy, prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD, motivational interviewing, CBT for chronic pain, Integrated Behavioral Couples Therapy, and Whole Health. With the right combination of treatments, patients can achieve their potential and relieve suffering.

In an initial visit, patients can expect a thorough, collaborative discussion with shared decision making to understand their symptoms, life goals, and clinical needs. I will evaluate the patient's condition to determine appropriate medication interventions and discuss personalized treatment recommendations including integrated psychotherapy. Typical follow-up visits are approximately 20-30 minutes in length. Depending on the severity and complexity of a patient's situation, referrals to additional counseling or therapy may also be suggested.

I am a Board-Certified psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with over 30 years' experience in medication management and therapy. Dr. Deringer is a psychiatrist with board certification in general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. She earned her M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School, and she completed her psychiatry residency and addiction psychiatry fellowship training at New York University. She has previously held faculty roles at New York University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. She has been involved in training the next generation of psychiatrists through her past work on the Program Director team for the MGH-McLean Psychiatry Residency Program. She has expertise in treating adults with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, personality disorders, trauma, and ADHD.

Dr. Deringer cares deeply about understanding each patient's unique experience.  She recognizes that mental health symptoms are impacted by an individual's biological make-up, social situation, and their individual way of interacting with others in the world.  She will assess all of these factors and work with you to develop an appropriate treatment plan to help you feel better and meet your goals.  She incorporates supportive psychotherapy into all of her patient meetings; this may include discussions of the role of nutrition, exercise, and sleep habits in your overall well-being.

Dr. Deringer will begin the evaluation process with a thorough one-hour session in which we will discuss your current symptoms, your prior treatment history, your medical history, and your goals for treatment.  At the end of that session, she will begin to formulate her diagnostic impression and treatment recommendations.  Sometimes, the evaluation process may require more than one session, and it may be helpful for Dr. Deringer to gather information, with your permission, from prior treatment or to collaborate with your therapist if you have one.  Dr. Deringer will work with you on a medication treatment plan, if clinically indicated, to help you manage your symptoms and achieve your treatment goals.

My approach to patient care is rooted in empathy, trust, and collaboration. I am dedicated to listening closely to each patient's unique concerns and crafting personalized treatment plans that address both immediate symptoms and long-term mental well-being. My specialties include managing mood disorders, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and stress-related conditions, with a particular emphasis on helping individuals navigate life transitions and mental health challenges. I believe in a thorough and patient-centered approach: during the first session, I take the time to understand my patient's history, current struggles, and goals for treatment, and together we establish clear and realistic objectives to guide the treatment process. I offer a combination of psychotherapy, medication management, and wellness strategies, and I value open communication to ensure that every patient feels heard and empowered throughout their mental health journey.

I am a staff psychiatrist at Talkiatry, dedicated to providing compassionate and effective care through telepsychiatry. I completed my undergraduate studies at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where I focused on Neuroscience and Pre-Medical studies. I then pursued my medical degree at Rocky Vista University in Parker, Colorado before completing my psychiatry residency at HCA Aurora in Aurora, Colorado. I was the recipient of the Chairman's Crystal Distinction of Excellence Award, recognizing a resident's exemplary performance and endorsing a resident's future success in the field of psychiatry. With a strong foundation in both neuroscience and psychiatry, I approach each patient with a deep understanding of the mind-body connection and the complexities of mental health.

When I am not providing professional care, I am an advocate for personal health and wellness. I enjoy spending quality time with my wife and family, staying active through exercise, relaxing at the Jersey Shore, and exploring new travel destinations.
