I went on to complete my psychiatry residency at Stony Brook University Hospital, where I received an award for academic achievement.

I think it is important for patients to have all the necessary information to make informed decisions when it comes to their psychiatric treatment.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist with experience working with a broad range of mental health symptoms and a diverse patient population. I was born and raised in the suburbs of Kansas City, Kansas. I completed medical school training and residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas along with Wichita, Kansas.

I have always been fascinated by the natural world and received a bachelor's degree in biology at Kansas State University, where I was active in a research lab investigating protein function in the human body.

Rather than focus primarily on illness or problems, my approach is to first evaluate patients comprehensively, then utilize what's learned from this to treat and empower them to make and then practice choices that lead to improved health and well-being, using an integrative model that recognizes that mental, physical, social, and spiritual health are one.

A skilled psychopharmacologist and psychotherapist, I have over 30 years' experience successfully helping people overcome a diverse range of emotional, psychiatric, and addiction challenges.

I was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and am a graduate of Augustana College. I obtained my MD at the USD School of Medicine. My residency was at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, where I was trained in both psychotherapy and biological management of psychiatric challenges. Following residency training, I continued to work with UAMS and the State of Arkansas in research and program development, focusing on implementing and then teaching novel strengths-focused care for people with severe mental illness for the first 12 years of my career. Later, I moved with my wife and three children to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and have since been in clinical practice and leadership roles in inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth psychiatric care settings.

My clinical interests include mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, and OCD. I am passionate about incorporating psychotherapeutic tools into my practice, including supportive psychotherapy. I take a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental approach to care, and my goal is to create a safe and supportive space where patients feel heard and empowered to take an active role in their treatment, using a combination of supportive psychotherapy and medication management.

I joined Talkiatry as a general adult psychiatrist. I earned my medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Cairo, Egypt, and completed my residency in general psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. I have practiced psychiatry for 30 years in a variety of settings: hospitals, inpatient and consultation-liaison to other medical services, private practice, and outpatient care treating adults, geriatric patients, and adolescents. I have also provided geropsychiatric consultations to long-term care facilities and assisted living.

For new patients, I will conduct an initial evaluation; providing treatment records can be helpful. I will share treatment options with the patient and create a custom treatment plan. Follow-up appointments are scheduled every two weeks at the beginning of treatment.

I earned my medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest in Oregon, where I studied osteopathic medicine, which shaped my holistic view of health. I completed an intern year in Family Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences West. I hold a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology from the University of Arkansas, where I graduated with honors.

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, visiting national parks, and spending time with my senior dog.

What has motivated me over the course of my career as a caregiver? I am a native Houstonian who grew up in a working-class community. Through curiosity and hard work, I was able to attend a university that included people of vastly different life experiences. I was molded by both communities to appreciate the commonalities of humanity. That broad exposure extended my empathetic spectrum to grasp the needs of the American diaspora.

I use a biopsychosocial approach to evaluate the patient. I gather patient history with a mindset that considers the neuroscience that chemically shapes mood, thoughts, and behavior. I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and am board certified with ABPN (American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology). Upon completion of my residency through St. Louis University, St. Louis, I joined my parents' Internal Medicine practice. I learned firsthand that implementing mental health awareness, screening, and education into a primary medically focused practice led to more favorable outcomes. Many mental health conditions can manifest as and/or exacerbate a variety of medical/physical conditions and thereby go undiagnosed and untreated. I have worked closely and coordinated care within the medical field and with other specialists in treating and diagnosing comorbid mental health conditions.

While in private practice for over 10 years, I was also an attending and consultant for inpatient mental health care and provided mental health services for residents in various residential care facilities, group homes, and skilled nursing facilities. Over the past 5 years I have consolidated my practice and am presently employed with Compass Health Network in Missouri, helping bridge the gap in mental health care by coordinating and providing care to the underserved community.
