Colleen Ryan, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

Dr. Colleen Ryan is a psychiatrist who grew up in Kentucky and has trained and practiced in a wide range of clinical settings. Her experience spans inpatient and outpatient care, community mental health, state hospitals, addiction clinics, VA hospitals, and academic medicine. She became board certified in addiction medicine in 2019, deepening her understanding of how addiction affects individuals and families. She has also worked extensively with patients experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, including both military- and civilian-related trauma. Her diverse background allows her to appreciate the complex personal, social, and medical factors that influence mental health.

Dr. Ryan believes effective treatment begins with understanding a patient’s life experiences and perspective. She takes time to explore how patients see their challenges and what is or is not working for them. While medication can be an important tool, she does not focus on medication alone and values open discussion about its benefits and concerns. She prioritizes understanding how patients are functioning across all areas of life and strongly values a collaborative approach, viewing treatment as a partnership built on shared decision-making.

Dr. Ryan begins with a thorough evaluation that includes medical and family history, ensuring that underlying medical issues are not overlooked. The first visit is also an opportunity to build rapport and help patients feel comfortable. Together, she and her patients develop a treatment plan aligned with the patient’s goals. She recognizes that goals evolve over time and works collaboratively to adjust treatment as part of the ongoing growth process.

Laura Hickman, PMHNP

Staff Nurse Practitioner

Laura Hickman, PMHNP, earned her BSN from the University of Iowa and her MSN from Saint Louis University. During her graduate training, she completed multiple outpatient internships, including one focused on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, a modality she frequently incorporates into care. Board Certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner since 2014, she has practiced across Community Mental Health, inpatient psychiatry, crisis stabilization, TMS, and Suboxone treatment. She works with patients ages 5+ and specializes in ADHD, anxiety, and depression.

Laura’s priority is ensuring patients feel heard, valued, and respected. She fosters a collaborative, team-based environment where patients feel in control of their health. Rather than focusing solely on diagnosis, she emphasizes how someone is functioning in daily life. With warmth and “cheerleading” support, she helps patients feel less alone and more empowered to open up and pursue meaningful change.

Laura begins by exploring each patient’s history, past treatments, and current challenges at home, work, or in parenting. She develops individualized treatment plans in partnership with the patient, serving as a guide toward their goals. Together, they determine whether therapy, medication, or both best support improved functioning and well-being.

Robert Dugger, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

Dr. Robert Dugger is a board-certified psychiatrist in General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Born and raised in Miami to a Virginian father and Cuban mother, he is bilingual in English and Spanish. He earned a B.A. in Biology and Political Science from the University of Miami, a Master of Public Health in Health Policy from New York Medical College, and his M.D. from Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He completed residency and fellowship training in New York through the Northwell Health System and BronxCare Health System, where he served as Chief Fellow in Child Psychiatry. He has also worked as a researcher at institutions including Columbia University. Outside of work, he enjoys gaming, sci-fi fantasy, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, hiking, sailing, and sportfishing.

Dr. Dugger strives to create a supportive and respectful environment where patients feel genuinely heard and understood. He values careful listening, curiosity, and follow-through, and takes a practical, individualized approach to care. Rather than relying on one-size-fits-all solutions, he collaborates with patients to clarify goals, track progress, and focus on changes that meaningfully improve daily life.

Dr. Dugger begins by developing a thorough understanding of each patient’s history, current concerns, strengths, and goals. Early visits focus on understanding context—what is happening now, what has been tried, and what the patient hopes to change. Treatment plans are developed collaboratively and adjusted over time, with follow-up visits emphasizing steady, sustainable improvement through integrated and comprehensive care.
