My approach is holistic, integrative, and patient-centered, grounded in cultural humility and collaborative care. I specialize in mood and anxiety disorders, including depression, PTSD, and perinatal mental health, with a clinical focus on improving access to quality mental healthcare for historically marginalized and/or minoritized communities. I recognize that not all patients require medication, and I integrate culturally affirming support when therapy and education are more appropriate. I do not prescribe benzodiazepines, focusing instead on evidence-based strategies that support long-term wellness. I begin care with a consultation to ensure a strong fit and shared treatment goals, and I am committed to creating a safe, trusting space where patients feel empowered and in control of their healing.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist with over 15 years of experience treating patients across inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and telepsychiatry settings. I earned my medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, completed my psychiatry residency at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC, and hold a B.S. from Xavier University of Louisiana. I previously served as a Primary Care Mental Health Integration psychiatrist at the Veterans Health Administration, where I helped expand access to care in community-based clinics. I am an active member of the Black Psychiatrists of America, where I advance advocacy and equity in mental health care.

I believe healing happens when mind, body, and spirit are aligned. I create a compassionate and collaborative environment where patients feel deeply heard and empowered in their own care. My approach blends conventional psychiatric treatment with nutrition, mindfulness, movement, and stress-reduction strategies to support long-term mental wellness. I value authenticity, open communication, and shared decision-making, empowering patients to build resilience and restore balance in their lives. I begin with a comprehensive assessment exploring medical, psychological, and lifestyle factors that influence mental health. Treatment plans are personalized and may include psychotherapy, targeted laboratory testing, lifestyle modifications, supplements, and medication when appropriate. I work closely with patients to restore balance, resilience, and overall well-being through a truly integrative approach, with regular collaboration and feedback helping patients heal, grow, and thrive.

I am an adult psychiatrist with a holistic approach to treatment, taking into account the entire person, and I emphasize the importance of the therapeutic bond to help people reduce suffering and achieve their goals. I am a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. My practice focuses on a mix of medication management, offered in conjunction with supportive therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits, and insight-oriented psychotherapy offered in weekly 45-minute visits. I work with people struggling with ADHD, depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, and difficulties with self-esteem and relationships. Occasionally I may believe that additional therapy is warranted and recommend a separate therapist to provide the best outcome.

I received my medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed my residency training at New York University. During training, I gained experience treating patients with various psychiatric illnesses in several different clinics and hospital-based settings. I worked with experts in the field of depression and provided consultations for patients considering transcranial magnetic stimulation. I also published a review article on long-term injectable medications for psychosis.

I have maintained an interest in teaching and remain connected to the psychiatry department at NYU. I have supervised and taught junior residents and medical students. Additionally, I am interested in global health and disparities in access to care and have traveled to Ghana to teach medical students rotating through psychiatry at the university there.

I believe psychiatry combines science and the art of medicine. I treat both adults and children/adolescents, with expertise in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, addiction, geriatrics, and dual-diagnosis care. I am trained in TMS and ECT, am a Certified Suboxone Prescriber, and offer consultations and treatment through office-based or telemedicine visits. My approach is tailored to each patient's needs, integrating compassionate care with evidence-based treatment.

I acknowledge the many choices patients have in providers and strive to create a welcoming, collaborative, and supportive environment for everyone seeking care. Patients value my professionalism, patience, empathy, and attentive listening.

Before pursuing medicine, I explored a range of passions. After earning dual degrees in Biology and Biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside, I opened a popular Riverside eatery featured on The Food Channel. I later transitioned to the IT industry, earning a master's degree and certifications, before answering my true calling in medicine, graduating from Saint Matthews University School of Medicine.

I bring empathy, attentiveness, and a non-judgmental approach to every patient interaction. I am deeply committed to ensuring patients feel heard, respected, and understood. Patients can expect me to be thorough and dedicated, consistently advocating for their overall wellness throughout the course of treatment. Understanding that beginning mental health care can be difficult, I start with friendly, casual questions to build rapport, asking about patients' background, interests, and current life situation. I then review their medical and psychiatric history before exploring current symptoms and stressors. Together, the patient and I collaborate to create a personalized treatment plan.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2011 and completed my medical degree at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 2017. I completed my residency in psychiatry at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, in 2021, where I was selected as Chief Resident. I have extensive experience in both outpatient and deployed settings, having completed two operational tours with the U.S. Navy. During these tours, I served in Embedded Mental Health Clinics and aboard deployed ships, working directly with Sailors.

I take a holistic approach to mental healthcare, combining medication management, psychotherapy, and lifestyle modifications to help my patients achieve a quality of life that allows them to pursue their goals. I see the position of the psychiatrist as helping to educate and guide patients, allowing them to take an active role in their own recovery. I believe diversity is a strength and embrace providing high quality services that affirm the dignity, worth, and value of all individuals, including the LGBTQ+ community. I take an evidence-based approach in my treatment of individuals suffering with depression, anxiety, trauma, difficulty focusing and concentrating, sleep issues, and interpersonal problems. I utilize insight-oriented care, believing that gaining understanding of a person's feelings, thoughts, and actions will provide them the knowledge needed to make the positive change they desire. Therapy may be a key part of a person's treatment, and if greater frequency is needed outside of our sessions, I will refer and collaborate with a psychotherapist to help maximize a patient's success.

I am double board-certified in adult and consultation liaison psychiatry. My fellowship training helped me gain greater insight into the interface between medicine and mental healthcare. I have been practicing for seven years and have worked closely with individuals with co-occurring chronic medical issues, specifically organ transplantation.

I focus on two main approaches to mental health treatment: medication management and psychotherapy. Appointments focus on a mix of interactions aimed at tailoring each patient's specific medication needs as well as promoting mental health wellness through different types of evidence-based therapy techniques including mindfulness, CBT, CPT, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I work together with patients to develop a plan that fits each patient's individual needs. Initial appointments focus on identifying and treating primary concerns, and then later appointments center on building upon the therapeutic relationship to increase self-awareness, promote emotional insight, and secure lasting positive mental health changes.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist that specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and ADHD. I have also worked extensively with patients that have experienced sexual trauma in their past and patients struggling with substance and alcohol use addictions. I completed medical school at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and then went on to complete psychiatry residency training at Naval Medical Center San Diego.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist with over 14 years of experience, during which time I primarily treated active-duty US Navy sailors, their family members, and military retirees in the outpatient setting. My practice focuses on medication management in addition to supportive and cognitive-behavioral therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. I am a strong advocate of multiple treatment modalities and, in certain situations, may suggest that therapy and/or regular physical exercise be included in your treatment plan to provide the best outcome.

I received my B.S. in Physics from the United States Naval Academy. After serving as an Intelligence Officer in the Navy for eight years, I transitioned to medicine and earned my medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. After completing an intern year in Family Medicine, I completed residency training in Psychiatry at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA, where I remained on staff for the next ten years and was primarily involved in resident training and education. I held academic appointments at the Uniformed Services University and Eastern Virginia Medical School and served as the Psychiatry Residency Program Director for six years. I served my final four years in uniform running the behavioral health department at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA, and recently retired from the Navy after a 30-year career.

I have extensive experience in outpatient psychiatric care. In addition to the full spectrum of mood and anxiety disorders, I have treated a very large number of patients with PTSD stemming from combat, natural disasters, and sexual trauma. I believe that, like my service to the country, working alongside others in their journey to better mental health is an incredible privilege.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from United Healthcare?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
