My clinical approach is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and I continually expand my knowledge by incorporating tools from a variety of therapeutic modalities. I am fascinated with the connectedness of the conscious and subconscious mind, body, and spirit, and I approach treatment through the lens of a growth mindset. I prioritize creating a safe space where patients can strengthen their courage to be vulnerable and authentic. I view therapy as a journey of helping patients explore their inner world, where I act as a mirror in order for patients to gain insight into their motivations, patterns, values, and higher purpose.

I prefer knowing my patients on a deep level and highly value the therapeutic process, which requires patience over speed. I acknowledge that it takes many sessions before even a preliminary understanding of the human being in front of me can be formulated. I honor the truth that my patients are the experts of themselves, and I prefer empowering them over micromanagement. As subconscious patterns emerge, I highlight these, as they are often blind spots to the patient. I understand that when it comes to mental health, quick fixes are not the most appropriate or effective means to healing. However, I respect the use of medications when indicated in addition to talk therapy.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Nicholls State University and a Master of Science in Acupuncture from Texas Health and Science University. I completed both my MD and General Psychiatry training at Texas Tech Paul Foster School of Medicine, followed by specialized training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Texas School of Medicine.

My approach is rooted in compassion, collaboration, and respect for your unique story. I view mental health treatment as a partnership, one where psychotherapy and medication can work together to support your growth and healing. My goal is to help you uncover the patterns and behaviors that may be holding you back, and empower you to make meaningful, sustainable change. I encourage patients to take ownership of their mental health, and I am here to provide the tools, guidance, and support you need along the way.

We'll begin by taking the time to understand your story, your goals, and what brings you to treatment. The first few sessions focus on building trust and identifying the areas where you'd like to see change. From there, we'll collaboratively develop a treatment plan that may include psychotherapy, medication, or both, always tailored to your needs. I draw from multiple therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, to provide care that fits you, not the other way around. Throughout our work, I'll support you in developing insight, resilience, and confidence in managing your mental health.

My background includes medical training at the University of Utah, where I served as Student Body President, and psychiatric residency at the University of Texas, where I served as Inpatient Chief Resident and received awards for both clinical excellence and medical education. I hold an MD and an MBA.

Outside of clinical care, I am deeply interested in narrative medicine, the way our personal stories shape our mental health, and I found my passion for mental health care through the power of listening to people's stories. I bring that same commitment and curiosity to my work with patients.

I value therapeutic partnership, working with patients to balance symptom relief with meaningful self-exploration. I take a collaborative, patient-centered approach, creating a warm and nonjudgmental environment. I listen deeply, ask thoughtful questions, and encourage honest exploration of symptoms and underlying patterns. I value authenticity, curiosity, and respect for each patient's unique experiences. My clinical work is grounded in thoughtful, patient-centered care that combines medical rigor with a deep respect for the complexity of each individual's life. I foster a warm, collaborative environment grounded in genuine human connection, and I value exploring the deeper patterns that shape emotional life and the meaning beneath symptoms. Patients can expect transparency, clear communication, and shared decision making that honors their strengths, goals, and long-term well-being while helping them cultivate resilience and greater self-understanding.

Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation exploring symptoms, personal and family history, personality patterns, and the changes patients hope to achieve in their lives. From there, I work with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that includes thoughtful psychiatric medication management, supportive psychotherapy, and ongoing follow up. While I frequently work with patients experiencing anxiety and related conditions, my practice does not include prescribing benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Ativan, or Klonopin. Care instead focuses on evidence-based treatments that support lasting stability and deeper psychological understanding.

With this understanding, I spend time getting to know my patients, focusing on helping them achieve mental wellness rather than simply prescribing medications. When I became a doctor, I made a pledge to "do no harm." I take this commitment seriously and only prescribe medications, especially those with addictive properties, when it is safe and clearly indicated.

The first one or two appointments focus on a thorough assessment to establish a provisional diagnosis, which is essential for effective treatment planning. Once this initial diagnosis is made, I collaborate with my patients to develop tailored treatment recommendations. I am a psychiatrist specializing in adult and maternal mental health. I develop personalized treatment plans to address anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, PMDD, and perinatal conditions. My goal is to help patients reconnect with their values and live balanced, fulfilled, and meaningful lives. I combine pharmacotherapy (medication) with psychotherapy to create individualized treatment plans. Therapy provides powerful tools to manage thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that support balanced brain chemistry, and research shows that medication helps restore this balance more quickly and effectively, especially in moderate to severe cases.

I liken medication for the brain to fertilizer for a garden. Imagine your mental health as a vibrant garden: when well-nourished, it can thrive with resilience, beauty, and balance. But when symptoms like depression, anxiety, ADHD, or mood instability take hold, they act like invasive weeds, crowding out healthy growth and making it hard to enjoy the space. Medication acts like fertilizer, strengthening the garden's natural systems so the healthy parts can reclaim their place and flourish. Just as some gardens need only seasonal care while others require more consistent tending, medication plans are personalized to support each person's long-term mental wellness. My approach emphasizes diagnostic clarity, medication management, patient education, and brief psychotherapy based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I believe patients should take an active role in understanding their diagnosis and treatment.

Your first appointment is a supportive, in-depth conversation to share your story, challenges, and goals. I will review your medical and psychiatric history and assess symptoms using a whole-person approach that considers biological, psychological, and social factors. Together, we will develop a personalized plan that may include lab work, medication, and therapy. Initial visits last 60 minutes for thorough evaluation; follow-ups typically last 20–30 minutes, focusing on medication management and brief therapy. If needed, I can refer you to in-house or community therapists for add-on therapy support. Throughout your care, I prioritize shared decision making to ensure you feel informed, empowered, and supported.

My passion for medicine began in childhood, inspired by curiosity about the mind and body. I earned an Honors Chemistry degree with magna cum laude and completed my medical training and psychiatry residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. With a strong scientific foundation, I understand the role of medications and embrace holistic healing through connection, gratitude, and spirituality. I have experience in diverse clinical settings and have received national awards including the AWP International Fellowship and ADMSEP Innovations Award. I am dedicated to advancing maternal mental health screening and treatment through clinical care and education.

Frequently asked questions

What is a psychiatrist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions through medication management and supportive therapy. Think of a psychiatrist as a doctor for your mind. If you’re struggling with your mental health and aren’t sure where to start, a psychiatrist can help.

Take our 10-minute assessment to see if Talkiatry is right for you and get matched with a psychiatrist in

Austin, TX

who meets your needs.

Is it better to see a psychiatrist or psychologist?

You may not need to choose between a psychologist and a psychiatrist—although there are differences in the types of treatment and expertise mental health professionals can provide, they often collaborate on your care.

That said, here’s a quick guide to help you decide if a psychologist or psychiatrist is the best starting place.

See a psychiatrist if:

  • You’re experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition that are making it hard to go about your day-to-day life.
  • You’re experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition and/or have a family history of mental health issues.
  • You’re interested in exploring psychiatric medications, such as antidepressants, for mental health treatment.

See a psychologist if:

  • You’re looking for a psychotherapy outlet to help address behavioral or emotional challenges.
  • The concern you’re hoping to address is specific to relationship challenges, stress, grieving, or a life transition.

Not sure if your symptoms are severe enough to warrant medication? We always recommend consulting with a psychiatrist first to discuss your options. Also, keep in mind that if you’re looking for virtual care, you need to be sure your doctor or psychologist is registered to practice in

Austin, TX

(or for non-

Austin, TX

residents, the state where you live).

What is a psychiatrist vs therapist?

The term “therapist” can apply to a range of professionals including social workers, mental health counselors, psychologists, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, and psychoanalysts. Working with a therapist generally involves regular talk therapy sessions where you discuss your feelings, problem-solving strategies, and coping mechanisms to help with your condition.

Psychiatrists are doctors who have specialized training in diagnosing and treating complex mental health conditions through medication management. If you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or similar, a psychiatrist may be a good place to start. Other signs that you should see a psychiatrist include:

  • Your primary care doctor or another doctor thinks you may benefit from the services of a psychiatrist and provides a referral
  • You are interested in taking medication to treat a mental health condition
  • Your symptoms are severe enough to regularly interfere with your everyday life

While both therapy and psychiatry are both available online, you'll still need to be sure that the therapist or clinician is licensed to practice in

Austin, TX

(or for non-

Austin, TX

residents, the state where you live).

What to expect from your first psychiatrist visit?

It’s ok to be a little nervous about your first visit with your psychiatrist. But remember, they’re there to help you feel better.Psychiatrists have years of experience working with new patients and will help you feel comfortable during your sessions.

Here’s what to expect in your first visit at Talkiatry:

Evaluation: During your first visit with a Talkiatry psychiatrist, you’ll get to meet each other and answer questions about your current symptoms, personal history, medical history, and mental health goals.

Diagnosis: Based on the information you’ve shared, your psychiatrist will be able to provide a diagnosis of your condition, if you have one. Getting a diagnosis can feel scary, but it can also feel validating to finally put a name to what you've been experiencing. Your psychiatrist will help you navigate any emotions that come up and work with you on a path to move forward.

Treatment plan: You’ll collaborate with your psychiatrist on the best way to manage your symptoms. If medication is appropriate, you’ll discuss your options, including the benefits and potential side effects of each medication. Your psychiatrist will provide supportive therapy throughout your session and may also recommend working with one of our therapists. Our therapists partner with our psychiatrists in a collaborative model to provide holistic care.

To get started, take our free online assessment, to see if Talkiatry is right for you and get matched with a psychiatrist.

Will I need medication?

Medication can be an effective part of your treatment plan but medication is not right for everyone. Your psychiatrist will work with you to determine if medication is right for you.

Ready to talk with a psychiatrist? Take our 10-minute online assessment to see if Talkiatry is right for you and get matched with a psychiatrist who serves in

Austin, TX

.

Also note that prescribing laws can vary from state to state. During yourfirst visit, your doctor will be able to talk you through how it works in

Austin, TX

(or for non-

Austin, TX

residents, the state where you live).

What is the cost of a psychiatrist visit in
Austin, TX
?

The main factor that determines the cost of your visit is your insurance coverage. The majority of our patients pay $25 or less per visit.* If you have a deductible plan and haven’t met your deductible yet, the average cost is between $325 and $414. The best way to get an estimate of your total cost is to contact your insurance company and ask about their coverage for outpatient psychiatric services.

*Includes all types of patient costs: copayment, deductible, and coinsurance. Excludes no-shows and includes $0 payments.

What treatments are available for mental disorders?

Medication and talk therapy (also called psychotherapy) are the gold standard for treating mental health conditions but treatment is highly personalized. A treatment that works for you may not work for someone else. Luckily, psychiatrists are experts in treating mental health conditions and can guide you through different treatment options and help you find one that’s right for you.

At Talkiatry, we make it easy to find a psychiatrist in

Austin, TX

who matches your needs. Take our 10-minute online assessment to see if Talkiatry is right for you.

What can’t Talkiatry treat?

Our goal is to help you find the best treatment option for your needs and there may be some cases where virtual care isn't the right fit. If this is the case, your psychiatrist will be able to recommend other treatment options within your first visit. Our 10-minute online assessment will also help you determine whether or not Talkiatry is the right fit for your care.

What we can’t treat: Schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders: This is a complex condition that responds best to treatments that aren’t safe to provide in an online-only setting. Since we’re a virtual practice, we aren’t able to treat patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders.

Certain personality disorders, like borderline personality disorder: Generally, borderline personality disorder doesn’t respond well to medication. As a psychiatry practice, one of our main focuses is medication management. One of the most effective treatments for borderline personality disorder is dialectical behavioral therapy, which is something our clinicians aren’t specialized in.

Patients who have been hospitalized or required to stay overnight in a clinic or in-patient setting for a mental health condition in the last 6 months: Our goal is to provide safe, effective care. For patients who have been required to stay overnight for a condition, a virtual practice can’t provide the right level of care.

Patients looking for therapy only: Our psychiatrists specialize in medication management. While we do have some therapists on staff to support patients who’d benefit from both medication and dedicated therapy, we don’t treat patients looking for talk therapy only.
