Dr. Gerald Matthews, MD
I specialize in medication management, working primarily with adult patients in an outpatient setting. While my primary focus is pharmacological treatment, I frequently collaborate with therapists to provide comprehensive care when indicated. I have extensive experience treating civilians, active-duty military personnel, and veterans, addressing conditions such as mood and anxiety disorders, psychosis, and trauma-related disorders.
I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist. I earned my medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, KY. Following medical school, I entered active duty service in the U.S. Army, where I completed my psychiatry residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. After completing my training, I practiced as a staff psychiatrist at Fort Hood, TX, fulfilling my service obligation.
During the first visit, patients can expect a thorough psychiatric evaluation where I take time to understand their history, symptoms, and treatment goals. I provide a structured yet compassionate approach to care, discussing medication options and potential therapeutic interventions. For patients who may benefit from additional therapy, I collaborate with therapists to ensure a well-rounded treatment plan tailored to each individual's needs.

I am dedicated to expanding access to thoughtful, evidence-based psychiatric care, particularly for women and families during important reproductive life transitions. I strive to create a warm, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where patients feel comfortable discussing sensitive concerns. I value collaboration and believe treatment works best when patients feel informed, supported, and actively involved in decisions about their care. My approach is compassionate and individualized, with attention to each patient's unique experiences during pregnancy, postpartum, and other reproductive life stages. I begin by learning about each patient's history, current concerns, symptoms, and personal goals. While I specialize in reproductive mental health, I welcome patients of all genders and backgrounds. Together, we develop an individualized treatment plan that may include medication management, supportive therapy, education, and follow-up care, with ongoing communication and thoughtful adjustments to support progress and well-being.
I am a board-certified psychiatrist with experience in outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and telepsychiatry care. I completed residency training in General Adult Psychiatry and a Reproductive Mental Health Fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I believe that you need to take a whole-person approach to both mental and physical health. I use an integrated health paradigm with general and geriatric patients, drawing on traditional psychopharmacology, interpersonal neurobiology practices, and personality assessments to look at root motivations for behaviors, address core issues, and incorporate medication management as needed. My focus includes an integrated approach to the consideration of mental and physical health while incorporating mindfulness tools to teach skills of stress and anxiety management in everyday life. In conjunction with medication management, I use interpersonal neurobiology to help clients understand triggers as well as methods to calm overactive stress responses and reactivity.
I am a Stanford-trained board-certified psychiatrist and am board-eligible for geriatric psychiatry from UCSD, with 30 years of practice across a variety of settings. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and then attended Stanford Medical School to complete my MD. With visions of becoming a general surgeon, I went to the University Hospitals of Cleveland and completed two years of general surgery training before transferring to psychiatry. I completed my psychiatry training at Stanford University and my geriatric training many years later at UCSD.

Find a psychiatrist in Kansas
Waiting months for a psychiatrist is common across Kansas, and the shortage runs deeper in rural counties than in the Kansas City or Wichita metros. Talkiatry connects you with a psychiatrist licensed in Kansas who can see you by video from anywhere in the state. Most people schedule their first visit within days rather than months.
How online psychiatry works in Kansas
You start with a free online assessment that asks about your location, your concerns, and your history. From there, you get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Kansas and meet by secure video from home.
Your first appointment lasts about 60 minutes, which gives you time to explain your symptoms, ask questions, and work with your psychiatrist on a plan that fits your life. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes to check how you are doing and adjust care as needed.
Your psychiatrist is licensed in Kansas, so you can be seen from anywhere in the state as long as you are physically in Kansas during the visit. That is what makes online psychiatry work for so many people: it opens up your options beyond the providers who happen to have availability in your town.
What a psychiatrist in Kansas can help with
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who evaluate mental health conditions, and they can prescribe and manage medication when it fits your needs. Talkiatry psychiatrists work with people across a range of concerns, including:
- Anxiety, when worry, tension, or panic gets in the way of daily life
- Depression, including low mood, loss of interest, and fatigue that lasts
- ADHD, for problems with focus, follow-through, and restlessness
Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit. Your psychiatrist listens, evaluates, and personalizes your care, and therapy may be part of that plan depending on your needs and what is available to you.
Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Kansas?
Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is verified during the free assessment before you schedule. That means you know where you stand before your first visit.
What you pay out of pocket depends on your specific plan, so it is worth checking with your insurer for an estimate of any copay or deductible. Costs vary from plan to plan, and your assessment confirms your coverage upfront.
Getting mental health care in Kansas
Kansas has 114 designated mental health professional shortage areas covering about 1.17 million people, and only about 18.7% of the need for psychiatric care is currently met. The federal government estimates about 52 more practitioners would be needed to lift those shortage designations (KFF State Health Facts, as of December 31, 2025).
For you, that shortage often means long waits and few local options, especially outside the bigger metros. Seeing a psychiatrist online helps by connecting you with a licensed psychiatrist anywhere in Kansas, rather than limiting you to the providers in your immediate area.
