Patients can expect a compassionate approach often with utilization of supportive therapy, mindfulness, and at times cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic psychotherapy techniques to address their psychosocial stressors and unique needs. I am experienced in treating patients with a variety of mental health diagnoses including but not limited to depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, and those with a history of substance use disorders.

I am a psychiatrist board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. I completed my medical and psychiatric training at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN and a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Baptist Memorial Hospital in collaboration with IAC (Integrated Addiction Care) in Memphis, TN. I use a person-centered approach to tailor treatment to the individual, with an emphasis on shared decision making. I prefer to focus on psychotherapy and behavioral interventions as a primary part of the treatment plan, in addition to any indicated medication. Motivation for change is a large part of the healing process, and for many people recovery doesn't happen with medication alone. I ask all my patients to play an active role in their treatment. A thorough diagnostic assessment with discussion of the best treatment setting and modality, then regular follow up visits with emphasis on psychotherapy in addition to medication management (if indicated).

I am a Staff Psychiatrist with Talkiatry. I previously served in the US Air Force, where I completed my residency training in psychiatry (Lackland AFB) and was the medical director for a small-sized mental health clinic (Hill AFB).

Nathan Schulz, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I value open, honest, and ongoing dialogue about how mental health treatment can improve wellbeing and lead to healing. Over time, I tailor treatment recommendations based on individual needs, which may include medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, or other approaches. I avoid a one-size-fits-all model and work to create an environment where patients feel respected, understood, and supported as unique individuals. In the first meeting, I work to understand each patient's goals, experiences, and preferences. Some arrive knowing what they want, while others are new to exploring mental health challenges. My goal is to meet patients where they are and adjust treatment focus as needs evolve. I emphasize collaborative decision-making, clearly discussing treatment options, pros and cons, and next steps, while ensuring patients feel informed and empowered throughout care.

I attended the Ohio State University College of Medicine, where I received my degree, before completing a residency in psychiatry at the University of Illinois, Chicago. After several years working with veterans at the Jesse Brown VA in Chicago, I returned to my home state of Iowa in 2022. Since then, I have continued to work with a wide variety of clients and conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including at the University of Iowa and Clive Behavioral Health hospital.

I am board certified in adult psychiatry and have been practicing for over 36 years. My practice has focused primarily on medication management within the context of a supportive psychotherapeutic relationship. I also utilize cognitive behavioral techniques. If a patient requires more intensive psychotherapy, I refer them to a therapist and collaborate with that therapist. I have experience treating Depressive Disorders, PTSD, Panic Disorder, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and many other conditions. I feel my personal strengths include my inquisitiveness, scientific curiosity, and my desire to understand my patients better.

I was born in Hungary, just a few months before the Hungarian Revolution against the Soviets broke out in 1956. My family and I fled under difficult circumstances and immigrated to the United States. I grew up in New York City, attended The Bronx High School of Science, and went on to Columbia University for my B.A., where I took a double major in chemistry and music. After obtaining my M.D. from S.U.N.Y. in Syracuse, I returned to New York City for residency and fellowship training. During this time I won the Bendheim Fellowship Award at Cohen Children's Medical Center for a research study that examined the effects of background music on the academic performance of children with ADHD.

My current areas of interest include adult ADHD, psychiatric and medical co-morbidities, and the LGBTQ population.

Find a psychiatrist in Iowa

Waiting months for a psychiatrist in Iowa is common, and it should not be. Talkiatry has psychiatrists who are licensed in Iowa and can meet with you over secure video, so you can get care from home instead of driving to a distant appointment. Many people have a first visit within days rather than waiting weeks or months to be squeezed onto a local schedule.

How online psychiatry works in Iowa

You start by getting matched with a psychiatrist who is licensed in Iowa, which means you can be seen from anywhere in the state. Visits happen over secure video from home, so there is no drive and no time off work spent sitting in a waiting room.

Your first appointment lasts about 60 minutes. That gives you time to talk through your symptoms and history, ask questions, and work with your psychiatrist on a plan that fits you. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes, enough to check how you are doing and adjust your care as needed.

What a psychiatrist in Iowa can help with

An online psychiatrist in Iowa can evaluate and treat a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD, along with conditions like bipolar disorder, OCD, and PTSD.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can prescribe and manage medication when it fits your situation. Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit. Depending on your needs and what is available to you, therapy may also be part of your care. Your psychiatrist listens, evaluates, and builds the plan around you.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Iowa?

For many people in Iowa, insurance helps cover online psychiatry. Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is verified during the free assessment before you schedule a visit. What you pay out of pocket depends on your specific plan, so it is worth confirming the details with your insurer.

Getting mental health care in Iowa

Iowa has 181 designated mental health professional shortage areas covering about 1.90 million people, and only about 19.5% of the need for psychiatric care is currently met. The federal Health Resources and Services Administration estimates that roughly 83 more practitioners would be needed to lift those shortage designations (KFF State Health Facts).

For you, that shortage often means long waits or a long drive to find a provider taking new patients. Online psychiatry helps by connecting you with a psychiatrist licensed in Iowa, rather than limiting your options to whoever practices closest to you.

Common questions about psychiatric care in Iowa

Can I see a psychiatrist online in Iowa?

Yes. You can meet with a psychiatrist licensed in Iowa over secure video from home. Online visits let you get care without a commute, and many people are seen within days.

Do I need to live in Iowa to be seen?

Your psychiatrist must be licensed in the state where you are physically located during the visit. To see an Iowa-licensed psychiatrist, you need to be in Iowa when you meet, which is why care is organized by state.

Does insurance cover online psychiatry in Iowa?

Often, yes. Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is verified during the free assessment before you schedule. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, so confirm the specifics with your insurer.

Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication online in Iowa?

An online psychiatrist can prescribe and manage medication when it is clinically appropriate and legally permissible. A prescription is never guaranteed. Your psychiatrist evaluates your symptoms and history first, then decides what treatment fits.

Can I go straight to a psychiatrist, or do I need a referral first?

In most cases you can start with a psychiatrist directly, without seeing another provider first. Some people begin with therapy and add psychiatric care later; others start with a psychiatrist when symptoms are more severe or have not improved. Your plan may have its own referral rules, so check with your insurer.

How soon can I be seen?

Many people have a first visit within days rather than months. Timing depends on your schedule and provider availability, so there is no fixed guarantee, but online care usually means a shorter wait than a local office.
