Amrish Pipalia, MD
I combine both psychotherapy and medication treatment to provide holistic care that addresses not only your mental health but also the parts of your life that surround and are deeply intertwined with your mental health. When more intensive psychotherapy is warranted, I collaborate with an experienced psychotherapist to serve you better. With my experience in internal medicine, I am also comfortable navigating complex medical issues that may interact with your mental health.
I am board-certified in both adult psychiatry and internal medicine. I am a graduate of St. George's University School of Medicine and completed a combined Psychiatry & Internal Medicine residency training program at East Carolina University. Following residency, I completed a fellowship in Clinical Informatics at Oregon Health & Science University, learning how to use modern digital technologies and patient data to improve patient care. Since graduation from residency, I also gained specialized experience in treating veterans with terminal illness, specifically Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease), at the VA Medical Center in Portland, OR.
My academic activities include a presentation I have given multiple times on Illness Identity, teaching other clinicians how having an illness can change how we perceive our place in the world and how to help patients manage their relationship with illness.

Anisha Gulati, MD
My practice centers around treating the whole patient: mind, body, and spirit. I believe the judicious use of psychiatric medications, coupled with psychotherapy and alternative treatments such as meditation and yoga, can bring about transformative changes in the lives of those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions and life issues. In addition to general adult psychiatry, I received extensive training in one of the nation's largest women's mood disorder programs at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and enjoy treating peripartum and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. I am also well trained in addiction medicine and received additional training in buprenorphine use for opioid addiction.
I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist who has been in practice for over 10 years. I graduated with Honors in Psychology from The University of Florida, received my medical degree from The University of South Alabama School of Medicine, completed a clinical postdoctoral research fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine, and completed my Psychiatry residency training at The University of North Carolina. I am currently obtaining my MBA. After residency, I worked as a psychiatric hospitalist at Trident Medical Center in Charleston and have also worked in private practice. I have worked in inpatient units, private practice, and community mental health, as well as served as Chief Medical Officer of a large psychiatric hospital. Find a psychiatrist in Portland, OR
Long waits and full schedules make finding a psychiatrist in Portland, OR harder than it should be. Talkiatry matches you with a psychiatrist licensed in Oregon for online appointments, so you can start care from home instead of waiting months.
Your psychiatrist is licensed in Oregon, so you can be seen from anywhere in the Portland area, on a schedule that works for you.
How online psychiatry works for Portland residents
Everything happens by secure video. You complete a short assessment, get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Oregon, and meet from home. No commute, no waiting room, no time lost in traffic.
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes, giving you time to talk through your symptoms, ask questions, and build a treatment plan together. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes, so your care can adjust as your needs change.
What a psychiatrist in Portland can help with
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental health conditions and manage treatment. Talkiatry psychiatrists work with people managing anxiety, depression, and ADHD, along with conditions like bipolar disorder, OCD, and PTSD.
If medication is part of your plan, your psychiatrist can prescribe and manage it when clinically appropriate and legally permissible. A prescription is never guaranteed, and some medications may not be available for online prescribing. Your psychiatrist will discuss the options with you.
Therapy may also be part of your care, depending on your needs and availability.
Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Portland?
Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, so care is often more affordable than people expect. We verify your coverage during the free assessment, before you schedule your first visit. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, so it helps to confirm the details with your insurer.
Mental health care in Portland
Access to psychiatric care is uneven across the state. According to KFF's analysis of federal shortage data, Oregon has 129 designated mental health professional shortage areas. Only about 30.0% of the state's need for mental health practitioners is currently met. Closing that gap would take an estimated 68 more psychiatrists.
Online psychiatry helps expand your options by connecting you with a psychiatrist licensed across Oregon, rather than limiting you to the providers with an office nearby.

Start with a free assessment
Getting started is simple. Take our free online assessment, answer a few questions, and get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Oregon. From there, you can schedule your first video visit, often within days.
Can I see a psychiatrist without a referral?

In most cases, yes. Talkiatry does not require a referral to begin. You start with a free online assessment and get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Oregon. Some insurance plans still ask for a referral, so check with your insurer first.
What is the 3 month rule in mental health?

There is no official three-month rule in psychiatry. People sometimes use the phrase to describe giving a new medication or routine time to work, which can take several weeks. Your psychiatrist sets follow-up timing based on your treatment and how you respond.
Why is it so difficult to see a psychiatrist?

Demand for psychiatric care is high and the number of psychiatrists is limited, especially in shortage areas. That mismatch leads to long waits and full schedules. Online psychiatry helps by connecting you with a psychiatrist licensed across Oregon, not only those with an office near you.
Is it better to go to a psychiatrist or psychologist?

Both help with mental health, but in different ways. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose conditions and prescribe medication. Psychologists focus on talk therapy and testing, and in most states do not prescribe. If medication may be part of your care, a psychiatrist is a good place to start.
