Psychiatrists in Arizona

Surinderpal Kahlon, MD

Dr. Surinderpal Kahlon, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I provide medication management along with supportive therapy. In some cases I may refer you to a counselor or therapist for further care and collaboration. I have experience treating a wide range of conditions, including major depressive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and PTSD. I utilize a well-rounded approach to treat the whole person, through medication, active listening, and recommending talk-centered counseling programs.

I am an experienced Psychiatrist who spent the last 24 years of my career working in Veterans Affairs, where I was able to treat a wide variety of patients. I was trained in the VA system associated with Chicago Medical School (Finch University), located in North Chicago, Illinois. At the conclusion of my training, I was hired at the VA in Danville, Illinois until 2021. I also had a part-time private practice, which enhanced my experience in adult psychiatry. I graduated from a prestigious medical school that has consistently held a high position (4th) among the top 100 medical schools in the world.

Tejaskumar Patel, MD

Dr. Tejaskumar Patel, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I combine deep knowledge of neurobiology, behavioral health, and the mind-body connection to offer a collaborative, evidence-based, and holistic approach to care. I integrate diet, exercise, yoga, meditation, and lifestyle modifications with psychotherapy and medication management. My approach emphasizes active listening, curiosity, compassion, and even humor, creating a warm and supportive environment. By encouraging patients to integrate their unique life experiences into their treatment, I foster ownership, empowerment, and active participation in the healing process.

I am a distinguished psychiatrist with over 24 years of experience. I completed my psychiatric residency at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, where I served as chief resident and earned the Outstanding Resident of the Year award, then pursued a fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. I am triple Board certified in Adult Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Sleep Medicine, and I also hold certification in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry from the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties. These credentials reflect my expertise in psychiatry, neurology, and the management of complex psychiatric conditions in medically ill patients.

I have worked in diverse settings including inpatient units, psychiatric consult services, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes, and I am skilled in neuromodulation treatments such as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). I have also served in leadership roles as chairman of a psychiatric department, medical director of a behavioral health service line in a regional health system, and founder/CEO of a private psychiatric and TMS clinic. I remain at the forefront of psychiatric advancements, earning a reputation as a respected leader in the field.

During your first visit, I will review your symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, past treatments, substance use, psychosocial factors, and family history. I will discuss treatment options, including risks and benefits, and determine if my expertise and the telehealth platform are the right fit for your needs. Your safety is my top priority. Follow-up visits focus on monitoring progress, adjusting treatments, maintaining stability, and supporting your motivation to achieve your fullest potential.

Online psychiatrists in Arizona

Talkiatry offers online psychiatry across Arizona, giving you access to licensed doctors through video visits. Appointments are often available within days, and most major insurance plans are accepted.

Whether you’re in Phoenix, Tucson, or a community with fewer local options, you can meet with your psychiatrist from a private, convenient location anywhere in the state.

How online psychiatry works in Arizona

Talkiatry appointments happen entirely online. To get started, complete a short assessment about your symptoms, background, insurance, and preferences. We’ll then help you explore psychiatrists who are licensed in Arizona and may meet your needs.

After you select a doctor, you can schedule your first video appointment. Initial visits last 60 minutes, leaving plenty of time to share what you’ve been experiencing and discuss what you want from treatment. Most follow-up appointments are about 30 minutes.

Because psychiatry licenses are issued by state, you must be physically located in Arizona when your appointment takes place. You don’t necessarily have to be at home—just somewhere private within the state.

What a psychiatrist in Arizona can help with

Psychiatrists are doctors with specialized training in mental health. They look at both your mental and physical health to understand your symptoms, diagnose conditions, and recommend treatment. Unlike most other mental health professionals, they can also prescribe and manage medication.

Talkiatry psychiatrists care for adults as well as children and adolescents ages 5 to 18. Conditions they treat include:

  • Anxiety, including an anxiety psychiatrist in Arizona for panic and worry that gets in the way of daily life
  • Depression and other mood concerns
  • ADHD, evaluated by an ADHD psychiatrist in Arizona
  • Bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, postpartum depression, and substance use concerns

Seeing a psychiatrist doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be prescribed medication. Your doctor will first listen to what’s going on, review your history, and talk through the options with you. Your treatment plan may include medication, supportive therapy, or other approaches based on your needs.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Arizona?

Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, helping more people access psychiatric care through their existing coverage. We’ll verify your benefits as part of the online assessment, before you choose a psychiatrist and schedule your visit.

Depending on your plan, you may be responsible for a copay, coinsurance, or costs toward an unmet deductible. Check with your insurance company for the most accurate estimate.

Getting mental health care in Arizona

Arizona’s need for mental health care is much greater than its available supply. At the end of 2025, approximately 2.1 million residents lived in one of the state’s 213 federally designated mental health professional shortage areas. Those areas had enough practitioners to meet only about 10% of the estimated need, according to KFF.

Online psychiatry can’t solve that shortage by itself, but it can make geography less of a barrier. Talkiatry patients can choose from available psychiatrists throughout Arizona instead of relying exclusively on practices within driving distance.

Common questions about psychiatric care in Arizona

Can I see a psychiatrist online in Arizona?

Yes. If you are physically located in Arizona during your visit, you can meet with an Arizona-licensed psychiatrist by secure video. Telehealth psychiatry in Arizona covers the same evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing care you would get in person, from home.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist in Arizona?

Usually not. You can go straight to a psychiatrist by starting the free online assessment; you do not need a referral from another doctor to begin. Some insurance plans have their own referral rules, so check your plan if you want to be sure how coverage works.

Do I need to live in Arizona to be seen?

Your psychiatrist must be licensed in the state where you are located during the appointment. To see an Arizona-licensed psychiatrist, you need to be in Arizona at the time of your visit.

Does insurance cover online psychiatry in Arizona?

Often, yes. Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and we check your coverage during the free assessment before you schedule. Because costs vary by plan, confirm any copay or deductible details with your insurance company.

Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication online in Arizona?

An online psychiatrist can prescribe and manage medication when it is clinically appropriate and legally permitted. A prescription is never guaranteed. Your psychiatrist evaluates your situation first and recommends a plan that fits your needs, which may or may not include medication.

How soon can I be seen?

Many patients are seen within days rather than the months it can take to find a local provider. Times vary based on your needs and provider availability, so we cannot promise an exact date, but online scheduling usually moves faster than a traditional waitlist.
