Mary Gutierrez, MD

Dr. Mary Gutierrez, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I foster a warm, collaborative environment where patients and families feel supported and understood. I emphasize open communication and work closely with patients to define meaningful, realistic treatment goals. My holistic, family-centered approach integrates medication management, therapy, and psychoeducation with a deep commitment to cultural sensitivity and compassionate care. I begin by learning each patient's personal story, clinical history, and goals through a comprehensive evaluation, then create individualized, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to each child's unique needs and family context. I continuously collaborate with patients, families, and care teams to ensure treatment remains effective, combining psychotherapy, medication management, and coordination with other providers and resources.

I am board-certified in both Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and General Psychiatry, with over 20 years of clinical experience. I earned my M.D. from Loyola University Medical Center, where I also completed my residency in Adult Psychiatry, and pursued fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Northwestern University's Children's Memorial Hospital. My past roles include Medical Director for Compass Health Center's Under 18 Program and Attending Psychiatrist at Loyola. I have been recognized as a "Top Doctor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry" by US News and World Report and Negocios Now.

I believe in patient-centered care and a holistic approach to medicine. My practice focuses on medication management, in conjunction with supportive therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. I am a board-eligible adult psychiatrist. I obtained my medical degree at Nova Southeastern University and was elected chief resident by my residency program at the University of Central Florida. I graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University. I have worked in a variety of medical settings with different patient populations, including outpatient, consult liaison, and inpatient psychiatry.

I value open, honest communication and take a collaborative approach to care. I partner with patients to identify clear treatment goals and use symptom screener tools to objectively track progress. I strive to create a warm, supportive, and empathetic environment where patients feel heard, respected, and actively engaged in their treatment journey. My approach balances symptom improvement with medication tolerability and incorporates therapies that further enhance outcomes.

I bring over 30 years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings and have held leadership roles, including serving as Medical Director across various clinical programs. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago and earned my medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Find a psychiatrist in New York

Talkiatry psychiatrists are licensed in New York and see patients cia video, so you can start care from home instead of heading to an office or sitting on a local waitlist. Because visits happen online, you are matched based on your needs, not on which clinicians near you are taking new patients. You just need to be physically in New York State during your appointments.

How online psychiatry works in New York

You start by answering a few questions about where you live, what you are dealing with, and your mental health history. From there, you are matched with a psychiatrist licensed in New York and meet by video from home. First visits are 60 minutes, so there is time to talk through what is going on, and follow-ups are usually around 30 minutes.

A psychiatrist has to be licensed where you are located during the visit, so you need to be in New York when you log on. That also means an online psychiatrist in New York can see you whether you are in the New York City area or upstate.

What a psychiatrist in New York can help with

Talkiatry psychiatrists work with a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD, along with bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, postpartum depression, and more.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors. That means they can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and manage it over time, when it is clinically appropriate and legally permissible. Therapy may also be part of your plan, depending on what you need, and your psychiatrist will talk through what fits.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in New York?

Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is checked during the free assessment before you schedule a visit. What you pay depends on your specific plan, so for a detailed estimate it is best to contact your insurance company directly.

Getting mental health care in New York

Access to psychiatric care is limited in much of New York. As of December 31, 2025, the state's designated mental health professional shortage areas meet only about 15.2% of the need for practitioners, and an estimated 238 more practitioners would be needed to remove those shortage designations. Online psychiatry helps here, because it connects you with any Talkiatry psychiatrist licensed in New York rather than limiting your options to the offices near you.
