Matthew Koller, MD

Matthew Koller, MD

Clinical Coverage Director

Most of my work as a psychiatrist is with adults navigating PTSD, OCD, and the shifts that come with becoming a parent, including postpartum depression. I also spend time with people managing more complex patterns, like personality disorders, bipolar disorder, and anxiety that has quietly reshaped their daily lives. I trained in general adult psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine, where I served as Chief Resident of Education in my final year, and I bring an analytical, problem-solving mindset to sorting out what's actually driving a person's symptoms.

I don't think good treatment can start until I understand someone fully, so the first visit is a thorough evaluation where I take my time with your history, your symptoms, and what you're actually hoping to change. Medication management is the foundation of what I do, but it's one piece of the picture, not the whole plan. Depending on what you need, I'll fold in supportive therapy or recommend adding a therapist so the care around you is well-rounded. I try to be transparent about my reasoning and to build decisions with you rather than hand them down, and I tend to look for the strengths already there to work from.

I especially find common ground with parents and caregivers trying to hold their own health steady while looking after everyone else. The first step is really just a conversation, and we sort out the direction together once I understand where you're starting from.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who practices a holistic approach to developing an individualized plan to work toward a patient's goals. I am experienced in treating depression, bipolar spectrum disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety, and other related psychiatric disorders. I incorporate a multitude of treatment modalities such as supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness practices as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy, and I recognize the value of a multifaceted approach to wellbeing and may recommend treatment modalities that are complementary to medication management.

I received my medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and completed my adult psychiatry residency training at LSU Health Shreveport. I have more than 4 years of experience practicing in various clinical settings with an emphasis on mental health care in outpatient settings. My background and experiences have broadened my understanding of cultural stigmas and the relationship it plays in psychiatric care.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist. From traditional psychodynamic therapy to the more modern mindfulness-based dialectical behavior therapy, I take the approach that best serves my patients. In addition to being trained in a variety of therapies, I also employ a positive psychiatry approach which, as well as addressing a patient's symptoms, also focuses on their strengths and how they can be used to overcome adversity.

I completed my residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. In addition to being thoroughly trained in psychopharmacology, I have also received extensive training in psychotherapy.

Prior to pursuing a career in psychiatry, I was a high school math teacher, and prior to that, I was an NCAA Division I college athlete. My teaching and athletic careers have given me a well-rounded perspective on the human experience. Drawing on my academic training and life experiences, I meet patients where they are at, help them overcome their obstacles, and serve as a guide and a resource for them on their journey to their desired destination.

Find a psychiatrist in Houston, TX

You can work with a psychiatrist licensed in Texas without leaving your home in Houston. Talkiatry matches you with a psychiatrist who treats Houston residents by secure video. Your appointment fits around work, family, and your schedule. Because the care is online, you are not limited to the psychiatrists with an office near you. You can be seen from anywhere in the Houston area.

Online psychiatry for Houston residents

Here is how it works in Houston: You start with a short online assessment, then get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Texas and meet on secure video from home. Because your psychiatrist is licensed in Texas, you can be seen from anywhere in the state, whether you are in Midtown, Katy, or The Woodlands.

Your first appointment lasts about 60 minutes. That gives you time to talk through your symptoms, your history, and your goals. You and your psychiatrist build a treatment plan together, rather than rushing it. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes, enough to review how you are doing and adjust the plan as needed. Meeting by video also means no commute across Houston traffic and no waiting room, so it is easier to keep appointments and stay in care.

What a psychiatrist can help with

A psychiatrist in Houston can help with a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can prescribe and manage medication when it is a good fit for you. Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit; your psychiatrist listens, evaluates your symptoms, and personalizes your care. Talk therapy may also be part of the plan, depending on your needs and what your psychiatrist recommends.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Houston?

Often, yes. Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and you can check your coverage during the free assessment, before you schedule a visit. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan, so confirm the details with your insurer. Verifying coverage up front means you know where you stand before your first appointment.

Mental health care in Texas

Finding local psychiatric care in Texas can take time. Texas has 393 designated mental health Health Professional Shortage Areas that cover about 13.44 million people, and only about 32.2% of the state's need for psychiatric care is currently met, according to KFF State Health Facts (as of December 31, 2025). For you, that shortage is why a nearby search can turn up long waits or few openings. Online psychiatry helps by connecting you with a psychiatrist licensed in Texas from anywhere in Houston. You are not limited to the providers close to your address.
