Dr. Irene Pastis, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

In my daily practice, I focus on evidence-based treatments utilizing the latest clinical guidelines and current approved treatments. In addition to medication management, I also incorporate psychotherapy in the treatment of mental health conditions. I am passionate about taking a collaborative approach with my patients to help them reach their potential.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in adult psychiatry. I completed residency training at East Carolina University in both internal medicine and psychiatry. After residency, I pursued my passion in psychiatry and stayed on as a clinical assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at East Carolina University. In this role, I specialized in treating adults with mental illness in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. I have spent a considerable amount of time teaching residents and medical students and have published several papers focusing on the neuroscience pathways of mental health conditions.

I value collaboration and encourage patients to ask questions, clarify expectations, and identify their primary concerns from the start. While medication management is part of care, I emphasize insight, goal setting, and skill building. I integrate hypnotherapy, guided imagery, relaxation, and meditation to support wellness, pain management, sleep, anxiety, and addiction, tailoring treatment to each patient's needs. I take a flexible, whole-person approach, combining medication management with evidence-based therapies such as CBT, CPT, motivational interviewing, and family-based interventions. I work comfortably with children, adults, families, service members, Veterans, and individuals facing life transitions, including end-of-life concerns. My goal is to help patients develop practical tools for lasting mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

I am a physician with a distinguished career in military and civilian psychiatry. A retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, I have served as a plenary and invited speaker at national and international conferences on topics including addiction, electroconvulsive therapy, hypnotherapy, and quality improvement. I am a Certified Healthcare Executive, hold a master's degree in preventive medicine and biometrics, and have published in peer-reviewed journals. My clinical background includes pain management, addiction psychiatry, child and adult psychiatry, and academic appointments at multiple universities.

My role is to help patients better understand their mental health and, when appropriate, develop a medication plan that fits their life — not just their diagnosis. I provide thorough psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management, tailoring care to each patient's unique needs, symptoms, and personal circumstances. Whether a patient is struggling with depression, anxiety, or another mental health concern, I work collaboratively to clarify diagnoses, explain treatment options, and support informed decision-making throughout the care process.

I am a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine with experience practicing in both outpatient and inpatient psychiatric settings. I earned my medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed my psychiatry residency at Northwell Health, where I developed a strong foundation in comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

I emphasize a patient-centered approach and believe that best treatment outcomes result from a strong therapeutic relationship between a patient and a psychiatrist. I treat a variety of psychiatric disorders in adults, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. I do not treat patients with ADHD. I offer medication management and therapy through telehealth sessions, in both English and Korean.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist. I obtained my bachelor's degree from Tufts University, where I double majored in Biopsychology and Art History. I attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University and completed my psychiatry residency at Stony Brook University Medical Center. After graduating from residency, I was appointed clinical assistant professor at Renaissance School of Medicine, where I worked at the Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic. I was involved in teaching medical students and residents and was part of various research studies and publications.

I focus on providing patient-centered care, emphasizing improving quality of life and helping patients reach their specific treatment goals. My approach integrates medication management with supportive therapy. I believe in a collaborative treatment process and may recommend additional therapy support when necessary to optimize outcomes. I take a cautious and limited approach to the use of controlled medications, ensuring responsible medication management.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with specialized training in treating depression and anxiety disorders. I earned my medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and also hold a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Georgia. I completed my residency training in psychiatry at VA Boston/Harvard Medical School and gained significant clinical experience at McLean Hospital. Additionally, I completed a fellowship in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.

During the first visit, patients can expect a comprehensive assessment of their symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals. I take a thoughtful and individualized approach to care, working with patients to develop a treatment plan that incorporates medication management and supportive therapy. Follow-up visits typically last 20-30 minutes and focus on monitoring progress and adjusting treatment as needed. In some cases, I may recommend involving an additional therapist to further enhance the effectiveness of the treatment plan.

I take a holistic approach to mental healthcare, combining medication management, psychotherapy, and lifestyle modifications to help my patients achieve a quality of life that allows them to pursue their goals. I see the position of the psychiatrist as helping to educate and guide patients, allowing them to take an active role in their own recovery. I believe diversity is a strength and embrace providing high quality services that affirm the dignity, worth, and value of all individuals, including the LGBTQ+ community. I take an evidence-based approach in my treatment of individuals suffering with depression, anxiety, trauma, difficulty focusing and concentrating, sleep issues, and interpersonal problems. I utilize insight-oriented care, believing that gaining understanding of a person's feelings, thoughts, and actions will provide them the knowledge needed to make the positive change they desire. Therapy may be a key part of a person's treatment, and if greater frequency is needed outside of our sessions, I will refer and collaborate with a psychotherapist to help maximize a patient's success.

I am double board-certified in adult and consultation liaison psychiatry. My fellowship training helped me gain greater insight into the interface between medicine and mental healthcare. I have been practicing for seven years and have worked closely with individuals with co-occurring chronic medical issues, specifically organ transplantation.

I believe psychiatry combines science and the art of medicine. I treat both adults and children/adolescents, with expertise in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, addiction, geriatrics, and dual-diagnosis care. I am trained in TMS and ECT, am a Certified Suboxone Prescriber, and offer consultations and treatment through office-based or telemedicine visits. My approach is tailored to each patient's needs, integrating compassionate care with evidence-based treatment.

I acknowledge the many choices patients have in providers and strive to create a welcoming, collaborative, and supportive environment for everyone seeking care. Patients value my professionalism, patience, empathy, and attentive listening.

Before pursuing medicine, I explored a range of passions. After earning dual degrees in Biology and Biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside, I opened a popular Riverside eatery featured on The Food Channel. I later transitioned to the IT industry, earning a master's degree and certifications, before answering my true calling in medicine, graduating from Saint Matthews University School of Medicine.

Kirk Ramsey, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I am board certified in general and child and adolescent psychiatry. My practice primarily focuses on medication management. I see myself as a collaborator with therapists and counselors in caring for their shared patients and their families. While I specialize in working with patients with anxiety, I do not prescribe benzodiazepines.

I received my medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. I completed my residency at West Virginia University Hospitals and WVU School of Medicine and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine, and Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven and Middletown, CT. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Memphis.

After my fellowship, I remained in CT for two additional years, working in the Department of Children and Families, serving the state's at-risk youth and adolescents at a psychiatric residential treatment facility. I then returned to West Virginia University as clinical faculty in its School of Medicine. During that 12-year academic appointment, I had active roles in educating, training, and supervising medical students, general psychiatry residents, child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, and trainees from various disciplines. I worked for many years with adolescent males at both the Dually Diagnosed and Specialized Residential Treatment Centers within West Virginia University Healthcare. I provided outpatient and acute inpatient care, as well as hospital-based consultation services. Within the community, I provided medication evaluation and management services to residential treatment facilities and university student health. I have been seeing patients and collaborating with providers through telemedicine since 2016.

I offer medication management and supportive psychotherapy for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, ADHD, substance use disorders, and other mental health issues. I strive to embody "relational prescribing" and believe that medication management is most effective in the context of a relationship of mutual trust, emotional safety, and shared decision-making between provider and patient. I have trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy and various forms of cognitive behavioral therapy, and I tailor my approach to each patient's individual strengths and needs. I understand that the needs of the whole person must be addressed in order to facilitate growth and healing, and I enjoy collaborating with fellow medical and mental health providers to address a patient's complex needs as an integrated team.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who loves equipping my fellow human beings to feel and function better. I studied medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completed my residency at Duke University. I have worked in both private practice and integrated primary care/behavioral health care settings, and I am a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the North Carolina Psychiatric Association.

Find a psychiatrist in Virginia

Long waits and limited new patient appointments shouldn’t keep you from seeing a psychiatrist in Virginia. Talkiatry connects you with a licensed psychiatrist who treats Virginia residents online, so you can start sooner. Visits happen via secure video from home, so no commute and no waiting room. Appointments are often available within days.

How online psychiatry works in Virginia

You start by answering a few questions about your location, symptoms, and history. That helps match you with a psychiatrist licensed in Virginia who fits your needs, so you are not left guessing who to call. Your first appointment lasts about 60 minutes, which gives you time to talk through what you are experiencing, ask questions, and work with your psychiatrist on a plan. Follow-up visits are usually about 30 minutes and keep your care on track.

Every visit takes place online by video. Your psychiatrist is licensed in Virginia, which means you can meet from home anywhere in the state instead of choosing from only the providers near your address.

What a psychiatrist in Virginia can help with

A psychiatrist can evaluate and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. Talkiatry psychiatrists work with patients on anxiety, depression, and ADHD, along with bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, and other concerns.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can diagnose conditions and prescribe and manage medication when it is the right fit. Medication is one possible part of a treatment plan, not the automatic result of a visit. Depending on your needs, therapy may also be part of your care, and your psychiatrist will talk through the options with you.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Virginia?

Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, so many patients use their existing coverage. During the free assessment, your coverage is verified before you schedule, so you know where you stand up front. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan, so it is a good idea to confirm the details with your insurance company.

Getting mental health care in Virginia

Finding a psychiatrist locally in Virginia can be hard because there are not enough of them. As of December 31, 2025, KFF reports that Virginia has 128 federally designated Mental Health Care Health Professional Shortage Areas affecting about 2.6 million residents, and only about 22.4% of the state's mental health care need is currently met m(according to KFF as of 12/31/25).

For you, that shortage can mean long waits or few options close to home. Online psychiatry helps by connecting you with a licensed psychiatrist wherever you are in Virginia, rather than limiting you to the providers in your immediate area.
