Shilpika Varma, MD

Dr. Varma grew up in an immigrant family surrounded by aspiring doctors, and her passion for understanding the human mind and behavior blossomed early. This curiosity led her to pursue extensive medical training abroad, beginning at Kasturba Medical College in Southern India, followed by clerkships at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. She completed her Adult psychiatry residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville and specialized further with a child/adolescent fellowship at Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

Dr. Varma believes in a holistic, integrative approach to mental health. Her philosophy centers on identifying the root causes of ailments rather than merely addressing symptoms. Angelique Umutesi, LCSW

Angelique Umutesi is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience in outpatient mental health, school-based settings, and crisis intervention. She earned her Master of Social Work from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is completing her Doctor of Social Work at the University of Kentucky, focusing on Military Behavioral Health. She is a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist with additional training in grief, global mental health, and refugee trauma.

Therapy with Angelique is relational, grounded, and collaborative. She offers a space where clients feel safe, seen, and supported—free from pressure to have it all figured out. She values transparency and cultural humility, bringing warmth, curiosity, and gentle honesty to each session. Whether facing trauma, loss, identity shifts, or faith questions, Angelique walks with clients as they reclaim their voice and story.

Rachael Nelson, MD

Dr. Nelson is a board-certified psychiatrist who attended the University of Iowa Medical School and completed her psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.  She has extensive experience treating active-duty service members, family members of active duty and the veteran population.  She feels comfortable working with a wide range of age groups and enjoys treating challenges with anxiety, mood, sleep, and concentration.

Dr. Nelson believes that the key to success in mental health care is being able to establish a trusting and open relationship between psychiatrist and patient.

While initial sessions include the need to gather background information about the patient overall as well as the symptoms of concern, subsequent sessions are focused on learning the impact of the treatment.

Carrie Schmitt, DO

Dr. Carrie Schmitt, DO, graduated from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 2016. She completed her psychiatry residency at Henry Ford Allegiance Health in Jackson, Michigan in 2020 and a subspecialty in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Maryland in 2021. Dr. Schmitt is dual board certified in Adult and Forensic Psychiatry and has practiced in inpatient, outpatient, community, academic, and forensic settings.

Dr. Schmitt values compassionate, well-rounded care and works collaboratively with patients to develop effective treatment plans. She emphasizes communication, active listening, and dignity, creating a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where patients feel understood and empowered.

Dr. Schmitt begins by understanding each patient’s history, concerns, and goals. She works together with patients to establish clear, practical treatment objectives and ensures each plan is tailored to their unique needs, fostering progress and long-term wellness.
