Psychiatrists in Illinois

David Zhang, MD

David Zhang, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I am a board-eligible Psychiatrist specializing in general adult psychiatry, with a focus on depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, and ADHD in adults ages 18-64. My interest in psychiatry comes from understanding patients’ narratives and helping guide, educate, and empower them in their healing journey. Outside of work, I enjoy volleyball, rock climbing, soccer, and playing piano.

I take a holistic, collaborative approach and work closely with patients to address their concerns and priorities. I combine medication management with supportive therapy and lifestyle interventions. I value long-term relationships, continuity of care, and building trusting, supportive connections with my patients.

My approach typically includes medication management and supportive therapy. I partner with each patient to develop care that fits their goals and needs, while providing education and encouragement so they can actively participate in their treatment and healing.

My approach is to help you ultimately feel better and move forward with a hopeful plan involving medication management, education about your illness, and therapy to manage your emotional and environmental stressors. I strive to meet your expectations. Recognizing the challenges and complexities of mental health conditions, I also encourage input from your established care provider, therapist, and loved ones who want to be involved in your care, as I feel such collaboration provides optimal treatment. I have interests in mood disorders during and after pregnancy, and immigrant and refugee mental health.

I am board-certified in both psychiatry and family medicine. Prior to joining Talkiatry, I worked in a busy Minneapolis emergency room for 20 years, caring for patients presenting in mental health crisis, treating their acute presentation, and helping find solutions to their concerns, ranging from starting and adjusting medications to identifying and addressing contributing factors such as medical illness, substance use, and life stressors. I have also worked as a psychiatrist in an integrated primary care clinic. I have extensive experience and can comfortably manage a wide range of illnesses and problems. I see patients of all ages and ethnicities, including LGBTQ+ populations.

I have taught and supervised medical students, psychiatric residents/fellows, and family medicine residents. I have collaborated extensively with social workers, therapists, and other health care providers to achieve the best outcomes for my patients. I work on staying current with the latest evidence-based care and mental health treatments.

I foster a warm, supportive environment where patients feel heard and respected. I believe each person has a unique story and that treatment should be collaborative, thoughtful, and tailored to individual needs, goals, and values. I begin with a thorough evaluation, exploring history, interests, relationships, and goals to understand symptoms in context. I integrate medication management with psychodynamic therapy, CBT, motivational interviewing, and supportive therapy as needed. Care typically includes monthly visits until stable, then every 2–4 months to support continuity and long-term well-being.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and my MD from Tufts University School of Medicine. I completed psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital, serving as Chief Resident in Psychotherapy during my final year. With 12 years of outpatient experience, I have worked with diverse patients and symptoms, led an academic outpatient clinic, and supported its transition to telehealth during COVID-19.

Outside of work, I enjoy time with family and friends, reading, travel, and movies.

My practice focuses on medication management, though I believe in the importance of both therapy and medication management in treating mental illness. I offer medication management with supportive therapy in 30-minute follow up visits, and I also utilize referrals to therapists to enhance collaborative care and management of illness. I focus on treating patients with depression and anxiety disorders. I believe in a holistic, patient-centered approach to care and encourage patients to explore their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs in addition to their mental health. I believe in the importance of building a strong therapeutic relationship.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist starting my post-graduate practice with Talkiatry. After completing an undergraduate degree in psychology at Johns Hopkins University, I completed my medical degree at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. I am a recent graduate from the Adult Psychiatry Residency at University of Kansas Medical Center.

My primary clinical focus is on children, adolescents, and young adults dealing with trauma and co-occurring mental health disorders. Find a psychiatrist in Illinois

Booking a psychiatrist in Illinois often means long waits and a short list of names taking new patients. Talkiatry connects you with a psychiatrist licensed in Illinois whom you see by video, so where you live in the state does not limit your options. Most people start care within days, not months, from home and on their own schedule.

How online psychiatry works in Illinois

You begin with a free online assessment about your history, symptoms, and what you want to work on. From there, you get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Illinois and meet by secure video.

Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes, which gives you time to talk through your symptoms, ask questions, and start building a treatment plan together. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes. Because your psychiatrist is licensed in Illinois, you can be seen from anywhere in the state, as long as you are in Illinois during the visit.

What a psychiatrist in Illinois can help with

A psychiatrist in Illinois can evaluate and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. Talkiatry psychiatrists work with people managing:

* Anxiety, including panic, social anxiety, and constant worry

* Depression, from low mood to loss of interest in daily life

* ADHD, including trouble focusing, restlessness, and follow-through

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can prescribe and manage medication when it fits your needs. Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit. Depending on what you are working on and what is available, therapy may also be part of your care. Your psychiatrist listens, evaluates, and personalizes the approach with you.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Illinois?

Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, so many patients pay a standard specialist copay rather than out-of-pocket rates. Your coverage is checked during the free assessment before you schedule, so you know where you stand up front. What you pay out of pocket depends on your specific plan, so confirm the details with your insurer.

Getting mental health care in Illinois

Access to care is a real barrier in Illinois. The state has 228 designated mental health professional shortage areas covering about 7.0 million people, and only about 22.9% of the need for psychiatric care is currently met. Federal estimates say about 301 more practitioners would be needed to lift those shortage designations (KFF).

For you, that shortage often shows up as long waits and few local openings. Online psychiatry helps by connecting you with a psychiatrist licensed anywhere in Illinois, rather than limiting you to the handful of providers near your address.

Common questions about psychiatric care in Illinois

Can I see a psychiatrist online in Illinois?

Yes. Talkiatry matches you with a psychiatrist licensed in Illinois, and you meet by secure video from home. You do not need to travel anywhere or sit on a local waitlist to get started.

Do I need to live in Illinois to be seen?

You need to be physically located in Illinois during your visit, because your psychiatrist is licensed to treat patients in the state where you are. If you live in Illinois or are there for your appointments, you can be seen.

Does insurance cover online psychiatry in Illinois?

Often, yes. Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is verified during the free assessment before you schedule. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, so it is worth confirming the specifics with your insurer.

Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication online in Illinois?

Yes, when it is clinically appropriate and legally permissible. Your psychiatrist evaluates your symptoms and history during the 60-minute first visit and talks through medication options with you. A prescription is never guaranteed, and medication is only one part of a possible treatment plan.

How soon can I be seen?

Many people schedule a first visit within days rather than the months a local practice might require. Your exact timing depends on availability when you complete the assessment and get matched.
