I work with patients to meet the goals that matter to them. I believe that feeling heard and being understood are key factors in a successful treatment relationship. I have worked extensively with patients dealing with trauma from childhood abuse, assaults, combat, and accidents. I also have a lot of experience treating depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and personality disorders.
I have been working in telehealth since 2018. After completing my training, I worked in private practice and in various roles for the Department of Veterans Affairs. I most enjoy working in the clinic because of the long-term follow-up.
I enjoy my work and include psychotherapy in my appointments. I offer medication options to treat symptoms but also work with patients to examine behaviors and defenses that may be contributing to their problems. For patients who would benefit from more extensive psychotherapy, I may refer them to a therapist and work collaboratively with that therapist. I start off with a thorough evaluation to make a diagnosis, then work with patients to determine their treatment goals and develop a treatment plan to meet those goals.

Marsha Wheatley, MD
What has motivated me over the course of my career as a caregiver? I am a native Houstonian who grew up in a working-class community. Through curiosity and hard work, I was able to attend a university that included people of vastly different life experiences. I was molded by both communities to appreciate the commonalities of humanity. That broad exposure extended my empathetic spectrum to grasp the needs of the American diaspora.
I use a biopsychosocial approach to evaluate the patient. I gather patient history with a mindset that considers the neuroscience that chemically shapes mood, thoughts, and behavior. I am able to uncover factors that can inhibit psychological growth and development. I have experience in seeing how the social conditions of the œthen can influence the resiliency of the œnow. I appreciate, and am proficient in, advances in technology, but prioritize the analog relationship between doctor and patient.
Meeting people where they are. It is an old trope, but describes how one allows a patient to set the path forward. An open-ended interview is conducted with an open mind towards resolution. When being evaluated and treated by me, a patient can expect to be met in a cordial but professional manner. Treatments are discussed and considered based on the mental state of the patient and the clinical efficacy and scientific evidence of benefit. The patient is invited to ask questions and consider whether they wish to pursue the suggested treatment plan.

What a psychiatrist can help with
A psychiatrist can evaluate your symptoms, give you a diagnosis, and work with you on a plan to feel better. Talkiatry psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can prescribe and manage medication when it fits your needs. Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit, and depending on what you need, therapy may be part of your care too.
People in Jacksonville often reach out about:
- Anxiety: ongoing worry, panic, or tension that gets in the way of daily life. An anxiety psychiatrist in Jacksonville can help you sort out what is driving it and which treatment fits.
- Depression: low mood, loss of interest, or fatigue that lingers for weeks at a time.
- ADHD: trouble focusing, restlessness, or problems with follow-through. An ADHD psychiatrist in Jacksonville can walk you through evaluation and your options.
A psychiatrist can also help you figure out what kind of care fits your situation, so you are not left guessing on your own.

Mental health care in Jacksonville
Access to psychiatric care is tight across Florida, and Jacksonville sits inside that picture. Florida has 239 designated mental health Health Professional Shortage Areas covering roughly 9.87 million people, and only about 24.9% of the need for psychiatric care is currently met. For you, that shortage is a big reason a local opening can take weeks or longer (according to KFF as of 12/31/25).
Online psychiatry helps close that gap by connecting you with a licensed psychiatrist, rather than limiting your options to the providers who happen to practice near you. When care is online, a full schedule at one Jacksonville office does not have to be the thing that keeps you waiting.
