I took an adventurous path to Talkiatry. After perhaps thinking a little too hard about Intro to Philosophy in college — "the unexamined life is not worth living" — I first used my chemistry degree to work in pharmaceutical research. I changed course, working in computer network engineering, before deciding to find a more meaningful path. I worked as an EMT, then earned a Master's in Physiology before finally landing in medical school at Ohio State.

Finding a surprising interest in psychiatry, I stayed at Ohio State for residency, and then a fellowship in forensic psychiatry. I am board-certified in both Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. I previously worked as a forensic psychiatrist and evaluator at Ohio's maximum-security state psychiatric facility, as an attending psychiatrist running an inpatient unit for violent or dangerous patients, performing court-ordered evaluations, writing reports, and testifying when necessary. I have also worked as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist, performing psychiatric consults at several general hospitals in Central Ohio's largest hospital system.

I found great enjoyment in teaching successive generations of residents and medical students, serving as an adjunct faculty member at Ohio State, Ohio University, Wright State, and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. I am excited for the next chapter of my journey, exploring another area of psychiatry at Talkiatry.

A skilled psychopharmacologist and psychotherapist, I have over 30 years' experience successfully helping people overcome a diverse range of emotional, psychiatric, and addiction challenges.

I was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and am a graduate of Augustana College. I obtained my MD at the USD School of Medicine. My residency was at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, where I was trained in both psychotherapy and biological management of psychiatric challenges. Following residency training, I continued to work with UAMS and the State of Arkansas in research and program development, focusing on implementing and then teaching novel strengths-focused care for people with severe mental illness for the first 12 years of my career. Later, I moved with my wife and three children to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and have since been in clinical practice and leadership roles in inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth psychiatric care settings.

Although my practice focuses on medication management, I also implement supportive therapy and motivational interviewing in sessions to allow for a more comprehensive approach to treatment. My clinical interests include depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and ADHD.

I received my undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and my medical degree from Ross University, completing all of my clinicals in Maryland, D.C., and NYC. I completed my adult psychiatry residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, then returned to the east coast, where I completed my child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York. Dr. Eddiel Cruz-Hernandez is a board-eligible adult psychiatrist with experience across outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and consultation-liaison settings. He completed his psychiatry residency at East Carolina University and earned his medical degree from Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico. Prior to medicine, he studied chemical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, shaping his structured clinical approach. He is fluent in English and Spanish.

I have practiced psychiatry for 30 years in a variety of settings: hospitals, inpatient and consultation-liaison to other medical services, private practice, and outpatient care treating adults, geriatric patients, and adolescents. I have also provided geropsychiatric consultations to long-term care facilities and assisted living.

For new patients, I will conduct an initial evaluation; providing treatment records can be helpful. I will share treatment options with the patient and create a custom treatment plan. Follow-up appointments are scheduled every two weeks at the beginning of treatment.

Dr. Frederick Heller is a psychiatrist with experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Raised in New Jersey, he completed his undergraduate education and medical degree at Duke University, followed by psychiatry residency training at Mount Sinai Morningside/West.
