I believe in a kind, compassionate, and evidence-based approach that prioritizes patient needs and fosters a supportive, healing environment. As a psychiatrist, I diagnose and treat mental illnesses through medication management and psychotherapy. I create a welcoming, collaborative space where patients feel heard and supported, taking time to listen and build trust and a strong therapeutic relationship. My goal is to partner with each patient to support their mental health and help them reach their personal wellness goals.

Scot McKay, MD
I enjoy working with patients going through life transitions such as high school to college and college to adult life. I believe it is important to understand the whole person (mind, body, and spirit) when treating them. I treat people struggling with depression, anxiety, bipolar, and ADHD, as well as trouble with relationships and family conflict. I provide both medication management and therapy, and I believe that medication is just one of the items in a psychiatrist's toolbox and that therapy is equally important as medication.
I am board certified in Psychiatry and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry. I graduated medical school from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, and completed my residency and child/adolescent fellowship trainings at the University of Colorado - Anschutz Medical Center in Denver, CO. I have been named to Nashville Lifestyles Magazine's Top Doctors list in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Steven Wilkening, MD
I have experience treating a wide variety of psychiatric conditions and recognize that lifestyle factors such as sleep, physical activity, and stress-reduction are foundations of good mental health. Alongside medication management, I provide brief supportive psychotherapy, psychoeducation, as well as elements of cognitive behavioral and solution-focused therapies to assist patients in meeting their goals. I often encourage patients to see a therapist in addition to a psychiatrist.
I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist. I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree at Cornell University, followed by a neuroscience research-focused Master's degree at the University of Mississippi. Treatment plans are developed collaboratively and may include medication management combined with talk therapy and other evidence-based interventions. Progress is reviewed regularly and adjusted based on ongoing dialogue.
Find a psychiatrist in Nashville, TN
Waiting months for a psychiatrist in Nashville, TN is common, but it does not have to be your only option. Talkiatry matches you with a licensed psychiatrist who treats Tennessee residents by secure video, so you can start care from home instead of waiting for a local opening.
Because your psychiatrist is licensed in Tennessee, you can be seen from anywhere in the Nashville area, on a schedule that fits your day.
How online psychiatry works for Nashville residents
You start online and stay online. After a short assessment, you are matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Tennessee, then meet by secure video from home. There is no commute and no driving across town.
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes, giving you time to talk through your symptoms, ask questions, and begin a treatment plan. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes. Your psychiatrist gets to know you, not just your paperwork.
What a psychiatrist in Nashville can help with
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental health conditions and build a treatment plan with you. Talkiatry psychiatrists work with people managing anxiety, depression, and ADHD, along with conditions like bipolar disorder, OCD, and PTSD.
If medication is part of your plan, your psychiatrist can prescribe and manage it when clinically appropriate and legally permissible. A prescription is never guaranteed, and some medications may not be available for online prescribing. Your psychiatrist will discuss the options with you.
Depending on your needs and availability, therapy may also be part of your care.
Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Nashville?
Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, so care is often more affordable than people expect. During your free assessment, we verify your coverage before you schedule, so there are no surprises. Your final cost depends on your specific plan, so it helps to confirm the details with your insurance company.
Mental health care in Nashville
Access to care is stretched thin across the state. According to KFF's analysis of federal shortage data, Tennessee has 97 designated mental health professional shortage areas. Only about 13.3% of the state's need for mental health practitioners is currently met. Removing those designations would take an estimated 252 more psychiatrists.
Online psychiatry helps expand your options by connecting you with a psychiatrist licensed across Tennessee, rather than limiting you to the providers who happen to have an office nearby.

Start with a free assessment
Getting started is simple. Take our free online assessment, answer a few questions, and get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Tennessee. From there, you can schedule your first video visit, often within days.
Can I go straight to a psychiatrist?

In most cases, yes. Talkiatry does not require a referral to begin. You start with a free online assessment, then get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Tennessee. Some insurance plans still ask for a referral, so it helps to check with your insurer first.
How do I know if my mental health is declining?

Warning signs can include ongoing sadness, worry that does not ease, trouble sleeping, or pulling away from people and activities you once enjoyed. Changes at work or in your daily routine can also be a clue. A psychiatrist can help you understand what you are noticing and whether treatment makes sense.
How can I get psychiatric help for a family member?

Start by talking with them openly and without judgment about what you have noticed. If they are open to it, they can take the free online assessment and get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in their state. Adults choose their own care, so your role is to support and encourage. If someone is in immediate danger, call 988 or 911.
Is it better to see a therapist or a psychiatrist?

It depends on what you need. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose conditions and prescribe medication, while therapists focus on talk-based support and coping skills. Many people benefit from both, and the two often work together. A psychiatrist can help you find the right mix.
