Dr. Elena Perea is a board-certified psychiatrist.  She completed her undergraduate training at Wake Forest University followed by medical school and residency training at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).

Dr. Perea holds an adjunct academic appointment at UNC and has been involved in medical education for her entire career.  She most recently served as Residency Program Director for the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) psychiatry residency in Asheville, NC.  She remains involved in didactic education there for both residents and medical students.

She has a genuine interest in treating a vast array of psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders and obsessive compulsive and related disorders. I earned my medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Cairo, Egypt, and completed my residency in general psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. I have practiced psychiatry for 30 years in a variety of settings: hospitals, inpatient and consultation-liaison to other medical services, private practice, and outpatient care treating adults, geriatric patients, and adolescents. I have also provided geropsychiatric consultations to long-term care facilities and assisted living.

For new patients, I will conduct an initial evaluation; providing treatment records can be helpful. I will share treatment options with the patient and create a custom treatment plan. Follow-up appointments are scheduled every two weeks at the beginning of treatment.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Centre College of Kentucky in 1980, followed by a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston in 1986. Heeryoung Kim, MD, is a psychiatrist with experience in community health, outpatient, and intensive outpatient (IOP) settings, including work with young adults in IOP care. Dr. Kim earned a medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and completed psychiatric residency training at LSU Health Sciences Center and Yale New Haven Medical Center.
