How Duloxetine works

  • Increases serotonin and norepinephrine levels. Duloxetine slows the reuptake of these neurotransmitters, which help regulate mood, stress response, and pain perception.
  • Supports mood and anxiety regulation. With more of these chemicals available, brain circuits involved in mood and worry can communicate more effectively.
  • Also affects pain pathways. By boosting norepinephrine and serotonin in the nervous system, duloxetine can help reduce certain types of chronic nerve and body pain.

3 things to know

From: Sophia Monsour, DO, Chief Psychiatrist

  • It treats both mood and pain. Duloxetine is sometimes chosen when someone has depression or anxiety along with chronic pain symptoms.
  • It takes time to work. Many people notice improvement starting at 2 weeks, with it taking up to 4-8 weeks to see the full depression/anxiety benefit. Pain relief may develop gradually
  • Don’t stop suddenly. Stopping duloxetine too quickly can lead to withdrawal-like symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or “brain zaps,” so doctors usually recommend tapering.

How it works

How Duloxetine is prescribed at Talkiatry

1

Meet with a psychiatrist

Your first visit is a full psychiatric evaluation. Your clinician will take time to understand your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals.

2

Receive a diagnosis and treatment plan

Your psychiatrist will discuss possible diagnoses and recommend a personalized treatment plan.

3

Medication if it’s appropriate

If Wellbutrin is a good fit for your symptoms and health history, your psychiatrist may prescribe it and help you get started safely.

4

Ongoing care and adjustments

Mental health treatment works best with follow-up care. Your psychiatrist will monitor your progress and adjust treatment as needed.

Duloxetine is an antidepressant that can also help anxiety and some forms of pain. It is less commonly known than several other antidepressants, but it can be just as effective.
