- Increases norepinephrine and serotonin activity. Mirtazapine blocks certain receptors that normally limit these neurotransmitters, allowing more of them to circulate in the brain.
- Blocks specific serotonin receptors. This shifts serotonin activity toward pathways associated with improved mood and reduced anxiety.
- Has calming and appetite-stimulating effects. Because it also blocks histamine receptors, it can promote sleep and increase appetite in some people.
