- Increases serotonin availability. Trazodone partly blocks the reuptake of serotonin, allowing more of this mood-regulating chemical to remain active in the brain.
- Blocks certain serotonin receptors. This shifts serotonin activity in ways that can help improve mood and reduce anxiety.
- Produces calming and sleep-promoting effects. Trazodone also blocks histamine and certain adrenergic receptors, which can make people feel relaxed and sleepy.

- It’s often used to help with sleep. At lower doses, trazodone is commonly prescribed to help people fall and stay asleep.
- Drowsiness and next-day grogginess are common. Because of its sedating effects, it’s usually taken at night. Some people may feel sleepy or sluggish the next morning, especially when first starting or adjusting the dose.
- It can affect blood pressure and heart rhythm. It may cause dizziness when standing and, rarely, irregular heart rhythms—especially in people with existing heart conditions.
