Psychiatrists in New Jersey

Tanya Schineller, MD

Dr. Tanya Schineller, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I strive to build a positive therapeutic relationship with each patient, emphasizing trust, open communication, and patient-centered treatment goals. I provide a supportive and warm environment where patients feel heard, respected, and comfortable discussing their concerns. My approach focuses on collaboration and understanding each patient's unique needs. I begin with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment to understand each patient's concerns, current symptoms, history, and treatment goals, then work collaboratively with patients to develop a personalized, patient-centered treatment plan that supports their overall mental health and well-being.

I am a psychiatrist with experience across a variety of outpatient settings, including partial care, intensive outpatient programs, involuntary outpatient commitment, and PACT. I have practiced in both private practice and community-based settings, providing medication management and supportive therapy, and have over six years of outpatient telehealth experience. I have also worked in inpatient psychiatry on voluntary and involuntary units and provided consultation-liaison coverage. I completed a post-baccalaureate pre-medical program at Columbia University, earned my medical degree from University College Cork in Ireland, and completed my psychiatry residency at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey.

I am a board certified adult psychiatrist. I offer guidance with navigating difficult and painful emotions that may result from stressful life situations, such as the loss of or separation from a loved one, work related stressors, burn out, adult and childhood trauma, OCD and mood disorders including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and various anxiety disorders. Within a safe and supportive working relationship, I will strive to reach an understanding of your unique situation, identify the issues that are interfering with progress, and develop a plan to better identify and achieve your goals.

Previous to joining Talkiatry, I served as a clinical psychiatrist for the VA Healthcare System, providing care for veterans with a predominant focus on treatment of post traumatic stress disorder. I have also worked collaboratively as an integrated psychiatrist for a primary care FQHC, treating primarily trauma and stressor related disorders within a primary care setting. I completed my Psychiatry Residency from Mount Sinai-Beth Israel in New York City and obtained my medical degree from Temple Medical School in Philadelphia. I offer 60-minute initial appointments and 30-minute follow-up appointments, and I won't hesitate to collaborate with other mental health experts as necessary to better support your needs.

I favor a holistic and integrative approach to psychiatry, combining medication management with supportive therapy and elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, while remaining open to other treatment modalities depending on the needs of my patients. When more focused therapy is indicated, I may recommend that my patient work with a provider specializing in a particular modality of therapy as part of their treatment. I treat adult patients with mood disorders including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, anxiety spectrum disorders, OCD, PTSD, and specific phobias.

I began my practice at Talkiatry after completing my psychiatry residency at the Eastern Long Island branch of Stony Brook University, where I treated a diverse patient population. I received my undergraduate degree from St. John's University in Queens, where I studied Philosophy. Initially interested in a career in law, I decided to change gears and pursue a career in medicine after watching a relative struggle with her diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus. I then completed medical school at Tel Aviv University in Israel, where I fell in love with psychiatry during my clerkship at Ichilov Medical Center. During that rotation, I came to appreciate how each patient has his or her own unique story, regardless of their diagnosis.

In my spare time, I enjoy a variety of hobbies, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, running, baseball, and exploring new eateries and shops.

I am passionate about and very experienced in providing a holistic approach along with evidence-based care for patients battling depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADHD, and PTSD. I integrate supportive psychotherapy along with medication management and lifestyle changes such as nutrition, exercise, sleep hygiene, and stress management. I am focused on having a collaborative approach to treatment and forming a therapeutic alliance with every single patient under my care.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist in General psychiatry. I completed my medical degree at St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. After completing my residency at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, I transitioned to an attending psychiatrist at the same place where I completed my residency. During my initial years as an attending, I took care of my own patients and supervised third year residents in the outpatient setting. After a few years, I transitioned to an inpatient setting, where I treated both voluntary and involuntary patients. I also continued to evaluate patients in the emergency room as part of the call group for the last 8 years.

I value open communication and believe in building a warm, respectful environment where patients feel heard. I work collaboratively with patients to set clear treatment goals and tailor my approach to meet each person's unique needs. My practice emphasizes both medication management and supportive therapy to promote long-term well-being. During initial sessions, I take time to understand each patient's history, concerns, and goals, and I use a team-based approach, partnering with patients in treatment planning and decision-making to ensure care is both effective and aligned with their values.

I am a Board-Certified Psychiatrist with over three decades of experience in both outpatient and inpatient settings. I earned my medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed my psychiatry residency at University Hospital. I have previously served as Chief of Mental Health at a VA Hospital and have maintained a successful private practice focused on medication management and supportive therapy.

I begin each encounter with gentle curiosity, inviting patients to share their stories without fear of judgment. Together, I craft an individualized treatment plan with the patient that may include medication, psychotherapy, and/or referrals to subspecialty care, always in close collaboration with other members on the treatment team. My therapeutic orientation is informed by psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and dialectical behavior modalities. I have expertise in the treatment of a diverse range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. I use a developmentally informed and LGBTQ-affirmative approach in my practice, with the aim of enriching meaning and alleviating suffering in the domains of work, play, and love.
