I create a welcoming, respectful space where patients feel safe to communicate openly. I practice active listening and value patient input when setting therapy goals. My approach is holistic, treating the whole person, and I encourage collaboration, helping patients feel seen, heard, and empowered in their care. I review a patient's history before each session and begin with clear introductions and goal setting. I invite open discussion of concerns and tailor treatment plans with patient input. I often incorporate CBT, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy into care, promoting growth through supportive, personalized strategies.

My nursing journey began over 30 years ago in a state psychiatric hospital in Goldsboro, NC, inspired by the poised nurse I admired at church as a child. My path includes roles as LPN, RN, BSN, and multiple advanced practice degrees, and I hold the PMHNP-BC credential. I have worked in inpatient and outpatient settings, VA clinics, and private practices. I also serve as a preceptor for PMHNP students at my alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

I emphasize the importance of truly listening, so patients feel seen and heard. I work collaboratively with my patients to identify their main concerns and to build a treatment plan that feels right for them. I believe treatment should be a shared process in which the patient is empowered and supported in their mental health journey. Taking a "less is more" approach to medication, I focus on minimizing prescriptions while still addressing all of a patient's needs. My goal is to help patients eventually rely more on therapeutic skills than medication. I view treatment as a partnership, balancing my expertise in psychiatry with each patient's lived experience.

I bring over a decade of experience in outpatient psychiatric care, with prior roles providing treatment to juveniles in detention and adults in jail and prison systems across West Virginia. I completed my medical degree at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University and trained in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry at West Virginia University.

My treatment approach begins with establishing a good therapeutic rapport with my patients and listening to them so that they feel heard. I like to spend time providing psychoeducation on medications when discussing the treatment plan. My practice focuses on medication management primarily, but may incorporate supportive psychotherapy during medication visits. I may recommend additional psychotherapy if I feel a patient may benefit from this. My current practice does not include the use of any controlled substance medications, such as stimulants, benzodiazepines, and certain sleep aids.

I place a strong emphasis on establishing meaningful relationships with my patients and supporting them in achieving their individual life goals through effective treatment. I actively incorporate patient preferences into all treatment plans and integrate psychotherapy with medication management. I recognize the importance of educating patients about their care and dedicate time during each appointment to address any questions or concerns they may have.

In my clinical practice, I begin by facilitating an open dialogue with patients regarding their primary concerns for the appointment. During initial consultations, I conduct a comprehensive assessment, which includes gathering relevant medical, familial, and social histories that may influence the course of treatment. In subsequent appointments, I engage patients by inquiring about developments that have occurred since their last visit, as well as any issues related to medications or significant life events.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with a specialization in the treatment of adults aged 18 to 65. I obtained my undergraduate degree in brain, cognition, and neuroscience from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I subsequently attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and completed my residency training at JFK Hospital in Palm Beach, Florida.

I am a board certified adult psychiatrist who emphasizes patient education and a psychodynamic approach to outpatient psychiatry. My practice focuses on blending medication management together with psychotherapy, and I prioritize collaboration with your therapist, encouraging working together as a team. I understand that medications are not the end-all-be-all of treatment, but just the beginning. For trauma and acute stress, I understand that the journey starts at the tip of the iceberg, with much to explore as you feel more ready. Areas of specialization include psychopharmacology, patient-centered medicine, and combination treatment of psychiatry and psychotherapy.

I am a graduate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where I completed an MD and PhD combined program, which helped develop my "doctors as teachers" style of practice. I completed my psychiatry residency training at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois. My passion for empowering patients with knowledge stems from my academic experience in psychiatry residency training. I served as an Associate Program Director of Loyola's Psychiatry residency training program for two years and now maintain an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Psychiatry role with Loyola. I continue to contribute to residency training, as well as mentorship of medical students and psychology externs. Over the years, I have received several awards that demonstrate my affinity for teaching, including the Educator of the Year Award in 2022 from the Loyola Psychiatry Residency Program.

I approach medication management with an emphasis on shared decision-making within safe, effective options, thorough counseling about what to expect in treatment, and giving attention to the concurrent use of non-medication modalities of treatment alongside optimizing medication. I am accustomed to working with people who have more than one diagnosis. I am skilled and experienced in de-prescribing (methodically streamlining the number of medications being taken) when needed. Patients can see me for medication management, therapy, or both.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry. I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 2004. I was selected for the Health Professions Scholarship Program and completed my residency in 2008 at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia, where I was chief resident. Following residency, I deployed to Kuwait as a medical officer. I have taught and supervised residents at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I left active duty in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. After becoming a civilian, I went into solo practice, then joined Potomac Behavioral Solutions in 2014, where I served as medical director. I am a past president of the Virginia Psychoanalytic Society. I also lecture advanced mental health professionals for Lingyu International Psychology Centre based in Toronto.

I strive to create a respectful environment where patients feel heard as they build a strong therapeutic alliance. I value long-term collaboration to achieve meaningful treatment goals and improve quality of life. With clinical experience guiding my approach, I offer reasonable therapeutic optimism while addressing challenging symptoms and issues. I begin with a comprehensive clinical assessment to understand each patient's symptoms, life story, behavior, and personality, and I develop a collaborative treatment plan, revisiting it over time. Follow-up appointments integrate medication management, if prescribed, and psychotherapy tailored to the individual, using a combination of standard therapeutic approaches aligned with the shared plan.

I earned my medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed my psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital. I have served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for over 15 years. I am board certified in psychiatry by the American College of Psychiatry and Neurology. I am a board-certified psychiatrist in the field of general adult psychiatry. My approach to clinical practice is rooted in fostering a safe atmosphere in which to explore biological and psychosocial factors that affect mental health. I view medication as a tool that patients can use while also engaging in psychotherapy and making lifestyle changes to optimize their mental health. I encourage patients to be actively involved in their healthcare decisions. Although I have an integrative psychotherapy style, I may occasionally believe additional therapy is needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome. I offer a mix of pharmacotherapy in conjunction with psychotherapy in 30-minute sessions, utilizing pharmacotherapy along with facets of cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and supportive therapy as needed. I have experience treating patients with a wide range of psychiatric concerns including various anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar spectrum disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and substance use disorders.

I received my medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and went on to complete a general psychiatry residency training at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. I am a board-certified General and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with over nine years of experience. My practice focuses on medication management, which is founded not only on evidence-based medicine but also on the understanding that a trusting therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone of behavioral health healing. I incorporate CBT, supportive therapy, and psychoeducation into my medication management appointments and may refer patients for additional psychotherapy to improve outcomes. I believe a whole-person approach with open, collaborative teamwork is the key to progress.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Ursinus College, with a dual major in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Neuroscience. After receiving a Health Professions Scholarship from the Army, I obtained my medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. I went on to enter active duty military service and complete General Psychiatry residency training and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship training at Tripler Army Medical Center before completing active duty service as a staff psychiatrist and 101st Airborne Division psychiatrist at Fort Campbell, KY. There I cared for active duty service members and their families to manage depression, anxiety, trauma, and the unique stressors of military service.

I later transitioned to federal civilian service and served as a preceptor for Phase II Physician Assistant trainees and Army Social Work interns, reinforcing a passion for education that carried me to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). During my time at WRNMMC, I served in several roles including Deputy Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry, core faculty for the National Capital Consortium Psychiatry Residency Program, Associate Program Director, and associate faculty at the Uniform Services University for Health Sciences (USUHS). Prior to transitioning out of federal service to join Talkiatry, I was repeatedly recognized for excellence in academics and mentorship and received multiple teaching awards. This zeal for education and mentorship, as well as humility, personal growth, and learning, translates directly into my philosophy for patient care.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Aetna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
