Maju Koola, MD has experience practicing in outpatient and inpatient settings, including jail, prison, and nursing home environments. Dr. Koola earned a medical degree from Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh, India, completed a psychiatry residency at the University of New Mexico, and a NIMH-funded schizophrenia research fellowship at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, University of Maryland. Dr. Koola has also published research in psychiatry.

Since 2017, she has worked with UCLA's Commercial Sexual Exploitation Research Group and has received the APA's 2024 SAMHSA Minority Fellowship and the 2021 Point Foundation Scholarship. Her research has been widely published.

I was born and raised in Charleston, SC. I attended the College of Charleston for undergraduate studies, where I double majored in Psychology and Spanish. She completed residency training at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, followed by a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, NY. Her career has included serving as Director of Psychiatric Services at an addiction treatment center in Pittsburgh, PA, as well as Section Chief Psychiatrist for Addiction Services and then Chief of Psychiatry at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, where she had the honor of caring for our nation’s Veterans for nearly 9 years.
