Biography

I believe in a whole-body approach to treatment and healing. My style is warm, friendly, and accepting, creating a space where patients feel seen, heard, and respected. I consider both short-term symptom relief and long-term mental and physical health when developing treatment plans. I begin by gaining a thorough understanding of each patient's history, current symptoms, and future goals. I explore potential roadblocks from prior treatment and collaborate on a plan that may include medication management and brief supportive therapy, all aimed at supporting whole health.

I earned my Bachelor of Science from the College of William and Mary and my medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. I completed Psychiatry Residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship training at the University of South Florida and am board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I have practiced in outpatient settings, both in-office and via telemedicine, and have prior experience in inpatient psychiatry and consult liaison work within hospital systems.

Alton Williams, MD

I value open communication and work collaboratively with patients to set clear, meaningful treatment goals. Respect, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach are central to my practice. I believe mental health care is most effective when patients feel heard, understood, and empowered to take an active role in their care. I begin by developing a thorough understanding of each patient's history, concerns, and goals during the initial session, and I create individualized treatment plans that align with patient priorities. I integrate medication management with supportive therapy and other evidence-based tools to promote lasting progress.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with experience practicing in both outpatient and inpatient psychiatry settings. I earned my medical degree from Washington University in Saint Louis and completed my psychiatry residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. This clinical background allows me to support patients across a wide range of mental health needs with a thoughtful, well-rounded perspective.

I strive to create a supportive and respectful environment where patients feel genuinely heard and understood. I value careful listening, curiosity, and follow-through, and take a practical, individualized approach to care. Rather than relying on one-size-fits-all solutions, I collaborate with patients to clarify goals, track progress, and focus on changes that meaningfully improve daily life. I begin by developing a thorough understanding of each patient's history, current concerns, strengths, and goals. Early visits focus on understanding context: what is happening now, what has been tried, and what the patient hopes to change. Treatment plans are developed collaboratively and adjusted over time, with follow-up visits emphasizing steady, sustainable improvement through integrated and comprehensive care.

My practice is centered on evidence-based medication management, expertly tailored to each unique individual, informed by the best available research, and using a multidisciplinary approach where appropriate to achieve the best possible outcome. I offer motivational interviewing and supportive psychotherapy, and can collaborate with a therapist on your care team when more specialized treatment is needed on your journey to wellness.

Before joining Talkiatry, I had the honor of working for the Department of Veterans Affairs in both outpatient and residential settings, where I gained experience in improving quality of life for veterans with a wide range of troublesome to downright disabling psychiatric conditions, including severe anxiety and mood disorders, psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, developmental disorders including autism spectrum and attention-deficit disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. These disorders have almost certainly been with us for all of recorded human history, but within the last few generations, our understanding of and ability to treat these conditions has grown by leaps and bounds.

I am a board certified general psychiatrist who trained at the University of South Florida, earning my Bachelor of Science in Biology, and completing medical school and residency at the Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. I focus on compassionate, evidence-based care that integrates psychotherapy and psychotropic medications to promote recovery and growth. My collaborative and respectful style ensures patients feel heard while working toward meaningful goals. I emphasize setting clear expectations from the start to foster confidence and engagement. With my background in consultation-liaison psychiatry, I bring expertise in caring for individuals managing psychiatric conditions alongside significant medical illness.

The first appointment is a comprehensive evaluation, during which I carefully explore a patient's history, conditions, and symptoms. Based on this, I develop a personalized treatment plan and review it collaboratively, so expectations are clear. Future visits focus on monitoring progress, adjusting the plan as needed, and integrating both psychotherapy and medication management to best support the patient's needs and long-term growth.

I earned my medical degree from Ponce Health Sciences University, where I also served as Chief Resident in Psychiatry. I completed residency training at Ponce Health Sciences University and the U.S. Veterans Health Administration, Caribbean Healthcare System, followed by a Fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I am board-certified in both Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. I have served as Director of Psychiatry at the Roberto Clemente Center and Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. I am bilingual in Spanish and bicultural, with published research in cultural psychiatry and stress biology, and have been recognized for teaching and leadership.
