As a nurse practitioner, I believe in focusing on patient-centered care, providing a holistic approach to patient management, and having a collaborative approach to mental health treatment. I use supportive psychotherapy and at times cognitive behavioral therapy to help my patients change their thoughts and behaviors in managing their stressors. I have treated patients with various diagnoses including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, bipolar disorders, schizoaffective disorders, schizophrenias, alcohol abuse disorder, and substance use disorders.

I am a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who graduated with my Doctor in Nursing Practice from the University of Nevada Reno. My years of experience in the mental health field began when I became a behavioral health counselor working with adolescents, then as a psychiatric nurse working with patients across the life span. I have worked in various healthcare settings including pediatric and adolescent residential treatment, acute inpatient care, and outpatient as a nurse case manager on the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team for the state hospital. Since becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I have worked in community health clinics providing both psychiatric medication management and medication-assisted treatment to patients.

I emphasize the importance of comprehensive assessments, active listening, and building therapeutic alliances that foster trust and create a safe space for patients to share their thoughts and concerns. I apply the Biopsychosocial Model in every patient encounter, believing that a comprehensive understanding of the whole person leads to more effective treatment recommendations, improved outcomes, and better prognoses. I collaborate closely with patients to ensure they feel heard, encourage active participation in their treatment, and provide education to enhance insight and promote behavioral change. My approach includes supportive psychotherapy and incorporates techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy, Reality Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy during medication management visits.

I am a nationally board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). I earned my nursing practice degree from the University of San Diego (USD). My nursing journey began over two decades ago, driven by a deep calling to care for others. I started my career as an LVN on medical/surgical/telemetry floors, advanced to an RN in the emergency room, and eventually became a psychiatric nurse practitioner. My extensive nursing experience spans a wide range of clinical settings and patient populations, shaping my approach to interviewing, assessment, and intervention. I am deeply committed to making a positive impact in my patients' lives and giving back to the nursing profession. I precept student nurse practitioners in my practice and serve as a Clinical Assistant Professor at USD, where I help educate the next generation of healthcare providers.

My passion for helping others began at the age of 16 when I became an EMT and volunteered with a local emergency unit. Inspired by a strong belief in service to country and a desire to follow in my brothers' footsteps, I proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.

My practice centers around treating the whole patient: mind, body, and spirit. I believe the judicious use of psychiatric medications, coupled with psychotherapy and alternative treatments such as meditation and yoga, can bring about transformative changes in the lives of those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions and life issues. In addition to general adult psychiatry, I received extensive training in one of the nation's largest women's mood disorder programs at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and enjoy treating peripartum and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. I am also well trained in addiction medicine and received additional training in buprenorphine use for opioid addiction.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist who has been in practice for over 10 years. I graduated with Honors in Psychology from The University of Florida, received my medical degree from The University of South Alabama School of Medicine, completed a clinical postdoctoral research fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine, and completed my Psychiatry residency training at The University of North Carolina. I am currently obtaining my MBA. After residency, I worked as a psychiatric hospitalist at Trident Medical Center in Charleston and have also worked in private practice. Most recently I served as Chief Medical Officer for an 80-bed psychiatric hospital, Coral Shores Behavioral Hospital in Stuart, FL. I have worked in inpatient units, private practice, and community mental health, as well as served as Chief Medical Officer of a large psychiatric hospital. In 2018 I was awarded the Charleston Choice Award for Best Psychiatrist in Charleston, South Carolina. I currently reside in South Florida.

I believe that each person's "best self" is unique and that mental health care should meet individuals where they are. I emphasize a collaborative, client-centered approach, always keeping the individual's goals at the heart of care. I am dedicated to helping clients identify and overcome the symptoms and stressors that interfere with their well-being, and I work to dismantle limiting beliefs or labels that may have been placed on them. By taking the time to understand each person's challenges and aspirations, I help clients find sustainable, holistic paths to wellness. My care is grounded in empathy, respect, and a deep commitment to supporting each person's journey toward a fulfilling and balanced life. Since shifting my focus to psychiatric mental health in 2022, I have helped individuals improve their quality of life through medication management for mood disorders, PTSD, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health conditions.

I grew up in a rural community, where I learned the value of helping others achieve their best selves to support overall community health and well-being. I earned my undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Nebraska and completed my nursing education at Creighton University. I went on to earn a Master of Science in Nursing, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner and in Community Health, from Creighton University, and later completed a nursing practice degree at the University of Colorado with a focus on population and community health. I also hold a post-graduate certification in psychiatric mental health from Washburn University. I practiced family medicine for 18 years before transitioning to psychiatric mental health in 2022, and my background in both physical and mental health gives me a holistic perspective on care.

I continue to live in a rural community with my family and remain committed to helping people become their best selves.

I am dedicated to creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where patients feel heard and respected. I emphasize open communication to establish clear treatment goals and expectations, ensuring patients are active partners in their care. My approach remains flexible, adapting as treatment evolves to best meet patient needs. I begin by gaining a thorough understanding of each patient's history, concerns, and goals during the initial session, then develop personalized treatment plans that align with those goals, integrating both medication management and therapeutic interventions. This balanced approach allows for individualized care tailored to support long-term recovery and overall well-being.

I earned my medical degree at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha and completed my Psychiatry residency at Creighton University School of Medicine in Phoenix. I went on to complete an Addiction Psychiatry fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University. During training, I was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, reflecting my commitment to compassionate care. I am board-certified in general psychiatry and have experience working in outpatient, residential, and inpatient settings.

I am deeply committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can express their thoughts and feelings freely. My approach to therapy involves engaging each client with warmth and enthusiasm, and I encourage them to be active participants on their journey of emotional growth, healing, and empowerment. I use therapeutic expertise and various inner-healing approaches to teach clients restorative self-care practices, exercises that cultivate emotional awareness, strategies to manage unhealthy thoughts, and methods to change undesirable behaviors.

Working with me, clients can expect to take away from each session a plan of action with detailed steps, easy to apply skills, and practical strategies to help them manage stress, heal from hurtful experiences, improve their communication skills, and strengthen boundaries in their relationships. They will gain a better understanding about how and why they feel uncomfortable emotions and why they experience strong reactions in response to those associated thoughts.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with over 23 years of extensive experience working in the mental health field. I have worked with clients facing a variety of life's challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, as well as perinatal and postpartum mental health. I attended undergraduate school in Albany, GA, and graduate school in Valdosta, GA.

I pride myself on my ability to empathize with my patients and meet them exactly where they are in their journey. I believe that trust is the foundation of the therapeutic relationship and work diligently to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where patients feel safe, heard, and respected. In the initial evaluation, I focus on gathering comprehensive information to form a complete understanding of each patient's unique background and needs. From there, I develop an individualized treatment plan that aligns with the patient's prioritized goals. Each session begins from that foundation, allowing me to support patients at their own pace as trust deepens and progress unfolds.

I have worked in the mental health field for over 30 years following the completion of my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Suffolk University in Boston. I began my career as a mental health technician in a geriatric residential program and later pursued additional education in nursing, earning an Associate Degree in Nursing from Quincy College, a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from South University, and a Master's in Nursing from Eastern Kentucky University. Over the years, I have held diverse roles in adult and children's case management, residential and intensive outpatient programs, inpatient psychiatric care, and crisis stabilization. I have provided care in both inpatient and outpatient settings as well as through hospital consult services across the country.

I combine both psychotherapy and medication treatment to provide holistic care that addresses not only your mental health but also the parts of your life that surround and are deeply intertwined with your mental health. When more intensive psychotherapy is warranted, I collaborate with an experienced psychotherapist to serve you better. With my experience in internal medicine, I am also comfortable navigating complex medical issues that may interact with your mental health.

I am board-certified in both adult psychiatry and internal medicine. I am a graduate of St. George's University School of Medicine and completed a combined Psychiatry & Internal Medicine residency training program at East Carolina University. Following residency, I completed a fellowship in Clinical Informatics at Oregon Health & Science University, learning how to use modern digital technologies and patient data to improve patient care. Since graduation from residency, I also gained specialized experience in treating veterans with terminal illness, specifically Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease), at the VA Medical Center in Portland, OR.

My academic activities include a presentation I have given multiple times on Illness Identity, teaching other clinicians how having an illness can change how we perceive our place in the world and how to help patients manage their relationship with illness.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Aetna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with PTSD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
