I am a board-certified General Psychiatrist and board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. In addition to medication management, I also provide supportive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques during appointments. When appropriate, I will refer patients for additional psychotherapy and will work to collaborate with therapists to help patients achieve the best outcomes. I am a strong advocate of an integrated approach to treating children and their families.

I received my medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia/VCU in Richmond, Virginia. I then traveled to Greenville, South Carolina, where I completed a General Psychiatry residency at Greenville Health System/PRISMA Health, and then returned to Virginia to complete a Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at The Virginia Treatment Center for Children/VCU Health System. I completed my undergraduate training at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where I studied psychology and elementary education. Prior to entering medical school, I was a licensed elementary school teacher in Virginia, where I served children of various learning styles and needs.

I continue to have an interest in learning disabilities, other neurodevelopmental disorders, ADHD, mood disorders, as well as many other areas of psychiatry.

I approach medication management with an emphasis on shared decision-making within safe, effective options, thorough counseling about what to expect in treatment, and giving attention to the concurrent use of non-medication modalities of treatment alongside optimizing medication. I am accustomed to working with people who have more than one diagnosis. I am skilled and experienced in de-prescribing (methodically streamlining the number of medications being taken) when needed. Patients can see me for medication management, therapy, or both.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry. I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 2004. I was selected for the Health Professions Scholarship Program and completed my residency in 2008 at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia, where I was chief resident. Following residency, I deployed to Kuwait as a medical officer. I have taught and supervised residents at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I left active duty in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. After becoming a civilian, I went into solo practice, then joined Potomac Behavioral Solutions in 2014, where I served as medical director. I am a past president of the Virginia Psychoanalytic Society. I also lecture advanced mental health professionals for Lingyu International Psychology Centre based in Toronto.

I then returned to West Virginia University as clinical faculty in its School of Medicine. During that 12-year academic appointment, I had active roles in educating, training, and supervising medical students, general psychiatry residents, child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, and trainees from various disciplines. I worked for many years with adolescent males at both the Dually Diagnosed and Specialized Residential Treatment Centers within West Virginia University Healthcare. I provided outpatient and acute inpatient care, as well as hospital-based consultation services. Within the community, I provided medication evaluation and management services to residential treatment facilities and university student health. My primary focus is holistic care, taking into consideration all physical, psychological, interpersonal, and environmental factors when creating unique treatment plans. I strongly believe that all of these factors are interconnected and play a significant role in any individual's mental health and vitality. My goal is to work with clients to create a safe, non-judgmental, and collaborative treatment environment that promotes sustained healing and positive self-development. My practice focuses on medication management. Occasionally, I may believe that additional therapy is also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome.

I am a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. My academic journey began with a B.S. in Biology from the University at Albany. I later received my B.S. in Nursing from Pace University and attained my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner M.S. from Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, graduating magna cum laude. For the last seven years, I have diligently provided care to our nation's veterans, working on a dual diagnosis inpatient psychiatric unit in the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. In addition, while attending Hunter College, I completed a yearlong clinical rotation at Casa Promesa, a mental health outpatient and inpatient facility that services some of the most vulnerable and underserved populations in the South Bronx.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Cigna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with OCD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
