I approach medication management with an emphasis on shared decision-making within safe, effective options, thorough counseling about what to expect in treatment, and giving attention to the concurrent use of non-medication modalities of treatment alongside optimizing medication. I am accustomed to working with people who have more than one diagnosis. I am skilled and experienced in de-prescribing (methodically streamlining the number of medications being taken) when needed. Patients can see me for medication management, therapy, or both.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry. I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 2004. I was selected for the Health Professions Scholarship Program and completed my residency in 2008 at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia, where I was chief resident. Following residency, I deployed to Kuwait as a medical officer. I have taught and supervised residents at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I left active duty in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. After becoming a civilian, I went into solo practice, then joined Potomac Behavioral Solutions in 2014, where I served as medical director. I am a past president of the Virginia Psychoanalytic Society. I also lecture advanced mental health professionals for Lingyu International Psychology Centre based in Toronto.

My practice focuses on medication management. I work to foster a safe and collaborative space in which patients can address psychiatric illness and other barriers holding them back from the lives they want to lead. Typically, I offer appointments for medication management coupled with supportive or emotionally focused therapy in 30-minute sessions. When I feel that additional therapy is needed, I will suggest inviting a therapist to join the team for additional support and guidance. I welcome collaborations with other clinicians, be they therapists or other physicians caring for my patients. I strive to build strong therapeutic relationships that help patients grow and meet their goals, whatever their situation, challenge, or life stage. I welcome patients from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds and am LGBTQ+ friendly.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist. Before joining Talkiatry, I practiced consult-liaison psychiatry, seeing medically ill patients with psychiatric problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs, where I also treated veterans in nursing homes. I graduated from New York University with a B.A. in philosophy and photography and worked in nonprofit marketing in New York before deciding to pursue a life in medicine. Following a post-baccalaureate, pre-medical program at Columbia University, I completed medical school at The University of Maryland, followed by a psychiatry residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. While at Johns Hopkins, I mastered clinical assessment and treatment of general psychiatric problems. I also received specialized training in eating disorders, addiction, reproductive psychiatry, chronic pain, and geriatric psychiatry, an interest I pursued further with a fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In fellowship and in my subsequent experience at the VA, I developed expertise in caring for the difficulties that can accompany aging, including depression, anxiety, and memory loss, as well as the stress of medical illness. In addition to my background in geriatrics, I have experience working with peripartum women and enjoy working with patients navigating major life changes.

I have a conversational style that fosters trust and openness. I encourage patients to ask any and all questions and take pride in helping people understand their symptoms. Patients can expect a provider who genuinely enjoys listening to their stories. I begin by thoroughly reviewing each patient's history, concerns, and goals during the initial session. From there, I develop individualized treatment plans tailored to align with each patient's objectives, emphasizing collaborative care and clear communication.

I completed medical school in Des Moines, Iowa, with third-year rotations in Chicago. I finished internship and residency at VCU School of Medicine in Richmond, VA, and am currently completing a forensic psychiatry fellowship in Dallas, Texas.

I am an integrative psychiatrist with a warm, structured, and research-driven approach that combines medication when needed with integrative tools such as CBT, lifestyle changes, a "24-hour approach", and a bio-psycho-social-spiritual lens. I treat depression, bipolar, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, substance use, and psychotic-spectrum disorders with a holistic, results-driven approach. I work with individuals who feel stuck — functioning on the outside but "not like myself" inside — and focus on root causes to help them gain clarity, momentum, and purpose to function at their highest level across home, career, and life.

I begin with a 360-degree assessment exploring emotional patterns, routine, physical health, neurobiology, and values. My 24-hour optimization model supports intentional living, clarity, and structure. I fine-tune medications and augment with integrative tools to enhance mood, resilience, and wellbeing.

I hold an MPH and completed a 1-year fellowship through Psychiatry Redefined, as well as intensive inpatient and outpatient training. I am a Boston University School of Medicine graduate and former Chief Resident at FAU. My care is shaped by years in psychiatry and over a decade of coaching future physicians, researchers, and life coaches to reach their highest academic and career potential.

My passion lies in holistic, compassionate, and evidence-based care for a wide range of conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and life transitions. I bring extensive experience in comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and psychotherapy, utilizing cognitive-behavioral (CBT), psychodynamic, supportive, and dialectical behavioral (DBT) therapy approaches. I create a warm, respectful environment where patients feel heard and valued, and I encourage autonomy through mental health education and open dialogue, working to ensure patients are informed and engaged in their treatment. I prioritize empathy and trust, believing a strong doctor-patient relationship is key to achieving lasting therapeutic outcomes.

I begin with a comprehensive understanding of each patient's history, concerns, and goals. I develop individualized treatment plans and incorporate psychotherapy into each session to align with patient goals and enhance treatment response. Patient goals are revisited regularly to adapt plans as progress is made.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who earned my medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston after completing my undergraduate studies at Texas Lutheran University. I obtained my medical degree at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestro in the Dominican Republic, completed my residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City via Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and then completed a Fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry in a combined Cornell University - Columbia University program with the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

At the center of my clinical approach is a strong emphasis on establishing trust and using a collaborative approach to help patients develop an individualized and cohesive plan so that they are able to achieve their goals. My practice focuses on medication management, which I typically offer in conjunction with supportive therapy, motivational interviewing, and/or cognitive behavioral therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. Occasionally, I may recommend that additional therapy is needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team in order to provide the best outcome. I specialize in treating patients with a history of depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use disorders.

I am a double board-certified adult and addiction psychiatrist who has been in practice for over 9 years. I received my medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine. I then had additional training in Addiction Psychiatry through my fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

After completing training, I worked as an Addiction Psychiatrist and Director of Adult Services in the Trauma and Resilience Center (TRC) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). I practice patient-centered and trauma-informed care, valuing patient autonomy and collaborative decision-making, and acknowledging the burden many people carry from intersecting oppressions. I believe therapy is important, often equally important as medication, or more, and will work together with you to make a realistic treatment plan that will fit into your life. I also have a niche working with people with complicated relationships with their bodies, whether due to disordered eating, gender dysphoria, chronic illness/disability, or trauma. I welcome LGBTQ+ patients, including trans and non-binary adults. I also enjoy working with patients with OCD, as well as autistic/neurodivergent adults (including those seeking adult autism evaluation). Please note Talkiatry is most appropriate for autistic patients with Level 1 (or case-by-case Level 2) support needs and who are verbal.

Regarding eating disorders: please note that for patient safety, per Talkiatry policy, I am unable to work with patients with current active anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa (or significant relapse in the last 6 months), or with patients requiring current regular medical or lab monitoring for complications of binge-eating disorder or ARFID. Bariatric surgery patients are welcome if medically stable. Patients with current disordered eating that does not rise to the level of a formal diagnosis of anorexia or bulimia, or with a past history of anorexia or bulimia in sustained remission, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis at the first appointment.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with a BA in musicology and cognitive science from Oberlin College, an MD from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, and I completed my general adult psychiatry residency at Duke University.

Find a psychiatrist in Virginia Beach, VA

Booking a psychiatrist in Virginia Beach can mean long waits and a short list of local openings. Talkiatry works differently: you match with a licensed psychiatrist who sees Virginia residents by video, so you can be seen from anywhere in Virginia Beach without driving to an appointment.

Online psychiatry for Virginia Beach residents

You start by answering a few questions about where you live, your symptoms, and your mental health history. Talkiatry uses your answers to match you with a psychiatrist licensed in Virginia, and you meet by secure video from home. Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes, so you have time to talk through your symptoms, ask questions, and build a treatment plan together. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes.

Your psychiatrist is licensed in Virginia, so you can be seen from anywhere in the state as long as you are in Virginia during your visit. There is no Virginia Beach office to drive to, which is why "near me" here means "from anywhere in Virginia Beach," on your own schedule.

What a psychiatrist can help with

Psychiatrists are medical doctors. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe and manage medication, and adjust your care over time. Talkiatry psychiatrists work with adults and young people on a range of conditions, including:

Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit. Your psychiatrist listens first, then personalizes your care, and talk therapy may be part of the plan depending on your needs and availability.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Virginia Beach?

Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is checked during the free assessment before you schedule, so you do not have to look up your plan details first. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, so contact your insurer for an estimate, whether that is a copay or a higher amount if you have not met your deductible.

Mental health care in Virginia Beach

Getting psychiatric care is hard across Virginia. The state has 128 designated mental health professional shortage areas covering about 2.61 million people, and only about 22.4% of the need for psychiatric care is currently met (according to KFF as of 12/31/25). Online psychiatry helps expand your access by connecting you with a Virginia-licensed psychiatrist, rather than limiting your options to the providers who happen to have an opening in your immediate area.
