Psychiatrists in Oregon

Amrish Pipalia, MD

Dr. Amrish Pipalia, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

I combine both psychotherapy and medication treatment to provide holistic care that addresses not only your mental health but also the parts of your life that surround and are deeply intertwined with your mental health. When more intensive psychotherapy is warranted, I collaborate with an experienced psychotherapist to serve you better. With my experience in internal medicine, I am also comfortable navigating complex medical issues that may interact with your mental health.

I am board-certified in both adult psychiatry and internal medicine. I am a graduate of St. George's University School of Medicine and completed a combined Psychiatry & Internal Medicine residency training program at East Carolina University. Following residency, I completed a fellowship in Clinical Informatics at Oregon Health & Science University, learning how to use modern digital technologies and patient data to improve patient care. Since graduation from residency, I also gained specialized experience in treating veterans with terminal illness, specifically Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease), at the VA Medical Center in Portland, OR.

My academic activities include a presentation I have given multiple times on Illness Identity, teaching other clinicians how having an illness can change how we perceive our place in the world and how to help patients manage their relationship with illness.

My practice centers around treating the whole patient: mind, body, and spirit. I believe the judicious use of psychiatric medications, coupled with psychotherapy and alternative treatments such as meditation and yoga, can bring about transformative changes in the lives of those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions and life issues. In addition to general adult psychiatry, I received extensive training in one of the nation's largest women's mood disorder programs at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and enjoy treating peripartum and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. I am also well trained in addiction medicine and received additional training in buprenorphine use for opioid addiction.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist who has been in practice for over 10 years. I graduated with Honors in Psychology from The University of Florida, received my medical degree from The University of South Alabama School of Medicine, completed a clinical postdoctoral research fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine, and completed my Psychiatry residency training at The University of North Carolina. I am currently obtaining my MBA. After residency, I worked as a psychiatric hospitalist at Trident Medical Center in Charleston and have also worked in private practice. Most recently I served as Chief Medical Officer for an 80-bed psychiatric hospital, Coral Shores Behavioral Hospital in Stuart, FL. I have worked in inpatient units, private practice, and community mental health, as well as served as Chief Medical Officer of a large psychiatric hospital. In 2018 I was awarded the Charleston Choice Award for Best Psychiatrist in Charleston, South Carolina. I currently reside in South Florida.

I work collaboratively with patients, ensuring they feel heard, respected, and informed. I emphasize psychoeducation to empower patients in their treatment journey and encourage open communication to build trust and partnership. I treat a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD, in both children and adults. An initial assessment with me includes a thorough review of personal and medical history, identification of concerns, and the development of treatment goals. I often integrate supportive therapy with medication management to provide individualized, effective care that promotes both symptom relief and long-term well-being.

I completed my medical degree and adult psychiatry residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, followed by fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry at Harvard Medical School's Cambridge Hospital. I am double board-certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. My career has included roles in inpatient and outpatient care, academic settings, consulting, and telepsychiatry across multiple states.

I focus on medication management while also implementing elements of supportive, dialectical behavioral, and cognitive behavioral therapy within each session to fully address individual needs. At times, I may recommend a therapist for additional therapy. I am experienced in treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD.

I am double board-certified in psychiatry and consultation-liaison psychiatry. I received my medical degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in the Dominican Republic and completed my psychiatric residency at Lincoln Hospital in New York City. I then completed a consultation liaison fellowship at Morningside and West Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, further acquiring proficiency in caring for patients with complex medical and psychiatric comorbidities. After completing training, I worked in an acute inpatient unit and as a psychiatric consultant for patients admitted to medical units in Oregon.

I believe in a collaborative approach to treatment, emphasizing active listening, compassion, and respect. I prioritize using the lowest effective dose of medication to meet treatment goals while supporting the patient's overall well-being.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with over 26 years of experience treating adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I approach treatment as a true collaboration. I partner with patients to clarify goals and create individualized treatment plans that reflect their priorities and values. I strive to be non-judgmental, direct, and honest in my style, building a therapeutic relationship that supports open communication and trust.

I have worked with people from many different walks of life in clinics, hospitals, and online, providing evidence-based treatments for a wide range of mental health conditions. My professional journey is unique: I began my career as a research chemist, later earned a Master's degree in psychology and worked with children, before pursuing my medical degree and completing a psychiatry residency.

I begin with a thorough evaluation to understand each patient's circumstances and challenges. From there, I work with patients to set and prioritize goals, review treatment options, and select a plan that feels both comfortable and practical. As treatment progresses, I regularly revisit and refine the plan, ensuring it remains effective and aligned with the patient's evolving needs.

I am dedicated to creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where patients feel heard and respected. I emphasize open communication to establish clear treatment goals and expectations, ensuring patients are active partners in their care. My approach remains flexible, adapting as treatment evolves to best meet patient needs. I begin by gaining a thorough understanding of each patient's history, concerns, and goals during the initial session, then develop personalized treatment plans that align with those goals, integrating both medication management and therapeutic interventions. This balanced approach allows for individualized care tailored to support long-term recovery and overall well-being.

I earned my medical degree at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha and completed my Psychiatry residency at Creighton University School of Medicine in Phoenix. I went on to complete an Addiction Psychiatry fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University. Find a psychiatrist in Oregon

When you’re struggling, you shouldn’t have to wait months for a psychiatrist. Talkiatry connects you with a psychiatrist licensed in Oregon for online appointments you join by secure video, from home. Most patients schedule a first visit in days rather than months.

How online psychiatry works in Oregon

You start with a free online assessment, then get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Oregon who fits your needs. Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes, giving you time to talk through your symptoms, ask questions, and work with your psychiatrist on a plan. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes, so you can check on progress and adjust as you go.

Every visit happens over secure video, so you can see a psychiatrist from anywhere in Oregon. Your psychiatrist is licensed in Oregon, which means you can be seen whether you live in Portland, Eugene, Bend, or a rural county with few local providers.

What a psychiatrist in Oregon can help with

A psychiatrist can evaluate what you are experiencing and build a treatment plan around it, whether that is a new concern or something you have managed for years. Talkiatry psychiatrists in Oregon work with patients on conditions including:

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can prescribe and manage medication when it fits your situation. Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit. Depending on your needs and what is available, therapy may also be part of your care, and your psychiatrist will talk through the options with you.

Does insurance cover a psychiatrist in Oregon?

Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, so many patients use their existing coverage for online psychiatry in Oregon. Coverage is verified during your free assessment, before you schedule, so you know where you stand up front. What you pay out of pocket depends on your specific plan, so it is worth confirming details with your insurer.

Getting mental health care in Oregon

Oregon has 129 designated mental health professional shortage areas, covering roughly 1.39 million people, and only about 30 percent of the need for psychiatric care in these areas is currently met. Federal estimates suggest about 68 more practitioners would be needed to lift those shortage designations (according to KFF as of 12/31/25). For you, that shortage often shows up as long waitlists and few local options. Online psychiatry helps by connecting you with a psychiatrist licensed anywhere in Oregon, rather than limiting you to the providers near your address.

Common questions about psychiatric care in Oregon

Can I see a psychiatrist online in Oregon?

Yes. Talkiatry matches you with a psychiatrist licensed in Oregon and you meet by secure video from home. There is no office to travel to and no local waiting room.

Do I need to live in Oregon to be seen?

Your psychiatrist must be licensed in the state where you are physically located during the visit. To see an Oregon-licensed Talkiatry psychiatrist, you need to be in Oregon when you join your appointment.

Does insurance cover online psychiatry in Oregon?

Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is verified during the free assessment before you schedule. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, so confirm the details with your insurer.

Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication online in Oregon?

An Oregon-licensed psychiatrist can prescribe and manage medication by video when it is clinically appropriate and legally permitted. Medication is decided case by case, so a prescription is never guaranteed.

How soon can I be seen?

Many patients schedule a first visit within days rather than the months a local wait can take. Timing depends on availability and your schedule.

How is a psychiatrist different from a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and manage it over time. A psychologist focuses on therapy and testing and does not prescribe. Talkiatry psychiatrists can also coordinate therapy as part of your plan.
