I am a distinguished psychiatrist with over 24 years of experience. I completed my psychiatric residency at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, where I served as chief resident and earned the Outstanding Resident of the Year award, then pursued a fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. I am triple Board certified in Adult Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Sleep Medicine, and I also hold certification in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry from the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties. These credentials reflect my expertise in psychiatry, neurology, and the management of complex psychiatric conditions in medically ill patients.

I have worked in diverse settings including inpatient units, psychiatric consult services, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes, and I am skilled in neuromodulation treatments such as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). I have also served in leadership roles as chairman of a psychiatric department, medical director of a behavioral health service line in a regional health system, and founder/CEO of a private psychiatric and TMS clinic. I went to college at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, where I received my degree in Microbiology. I completed my medical education at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, SC, and completed my residency training at Creighton University School of Medicine-Valleywise Health in Phoenix, AZ. I served as vice chief resident during my residency training. I have additional post-residency experience working in the outpatient setting treating multiple conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, insomnia, OCD, and psychotic disorders. Areas of interest include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and ADHD.

I am dually board-certified in Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatry, and my journey through medicine has been shaped by rich and diverse training. I completed my General Psychiatry residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, and my fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Nassau University Medical Center in Long Island, NY. I have extensive experience treating a wide spectrum of conditions, including mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, and sleep disturbances, and I tailor my approach to each individual's unique story.

My treatment model includes thoughtful, personalized medication management, with generous 30-minute follow-up sessions to ensure care is never rushed and always attuned to the patient's evolving needs. When appropriate, I may gently recommend the added support of a therapist, recognizing that healing is often a shared and layered journey. Dr. Mary Stephenson is a board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with more than 25 years of clinical experience working with this population. Dr. Stephenson's practice focuses on medication management. She believes that the support and involvement of the family are an integral part of the treatment of the client. Additionally, more therapy support may be needed on occasion, and the recommendation to bring a psychotherapist on the care team may occur to provide an optimal outcome. She received her medical degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. She completed her psychiatry residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and her child and adolescent training at the Bingham Child Guidance Center, also part of the University of Louisville, in Louisville, Kentucky. After completion of her training, she moved to Colorado where she worked at The Cleo Wallace Center, in Westminster, CO, providing care for hospitalized youth, and clients in the Day Treatment and Residential setting. In 2000, Dr. Stephenson became the primary Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist on the outpatient team at Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Her role was providing diagnostic evaluations, and medication management in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), and the hospital clinic, working closely with residents, child fellows, and other trainees. She had an academic appointment through the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She treated a varied demographic and had a wide range of diagnoses in the child and adolescent population. From 2016-2021, she worked at Intermountain Health Center in Tucson, AZ providing care in the outpatient setting of the community mental health center. The care was a hybrid model of "in-person” and Telehealth treatment of children and adolescents with various disorders, with an emphasis on diagnostic evaluations of Autism and Autism spectrum disorders.‍

I have additional interests in trauma work; women's mental health, specifically in the peripartum period; and in working with individuals facing progressive diseases or terminal diagnoses.

I am a recent graduate of the psychiatry residency program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. During my residency, I sought out additional training in psychodynamic therapy and EMDR. I participated in the Psych Scholars track, which provided in-depth education and supervision around therapy and psychoanalytic theory. This allows me to better understand the role of both medication and therapy, to utilize, when to couple them, and what limitations they may have.

My practice focuses on medication management, though I passionately believe in a holistic approach. I have a gentle and approachable style when providing medication management in conjunction with supportive psychotherapy, and at times Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to more fully address each individual's needs. I utilize mindfulness approaches as well, which I find personally meaningful in my practices of meditation and yoga. I have experience treating patients with depressive and bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and OCD.

I attended Boston University for my undergraduate studies and Loyola Marymount University for graduate school. I then completed my training at Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school and Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine for residency, where I was selected to serve as Chief Resident during my final year. I am a board-certified Psychiatrist. After completion of my residency in 2016, I dedicated seven years to serving a wide range of patients in a community mental health setting, both in-person and via telepsychiatry. I also serve as a provider at an Intensive Outpatient Program. I also have extensive teaching experience in various settings.

My qualifications include a B.A. in biology from Harvard University and an M.D. from Tufts School of Medicine. I completed psychiatry residencies at Mt. Sinai and Brown and am board certified in both Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. My four decades of practice have exposed me to an eclectic range of cultures, ethnicities, and pathologies in a wide variety of settings, from solo practice to regional medical centers to academic institutions. This breadth and depth of clinical and life experience have helped me transcend cultural biases and institutional conventions and to more clearly see each patient as a uniquely complex and lovable individual.

I focus on the interconnectivity of the mind, body, and soul. I am an excellent diagnostician with expertise in complex mood disorders, psychotic disorders, interventional psychiatry, and advanced psychopharmacology. In addition to medication management, I am proficient in supportive and interpersonal psychotherapy. I am dedicated and empathetic to all my patients.

I received my medical degree from Alexandria University and completed my psychiatry residency at Stony Brook University Hospital. I am double board certified in both general adult psychiatry and consultation & liaison psychiatry with over 20 years of clinical experience. After serving as chief resident, I joined Stony Brook University and became Associate Professor in clinical psychiatry. During my tenure at Stony Brook, I served as director of the ECT service, treating many patients with complex psychiatric disorders, including treatment-resistant depression, severe bipolar disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder. I also served as director of the medical student psychiatry clerkship, where I received numerous teaching awards including Alpha Omega Alpha and the Aesculapius Award for Excellence in Medical Education. I have multiple publications and abstracts presented.

I have treated adults, geriatric patients, and diverse populations including but not limited to LGBTQ+ and veterans.

I provide medication management along with supportive therapy. In some cases I may refer you to a counselor or therapist for further care and collaboration. I have experience treating a wide range of conditions, including major depressive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and PTSD. I utilize a well-rounded approach to treat the whole person, through medication, active listening, and recommending talk-centered counseling programs.

I am an experienced Psychiatrist who spent the last 24 years of my career working in Veterans Affairs, where I was able to treat a wide variety of patients. I was trained in the VA system associated with Chicago Medical School (Finch University), located in North Chicago, Illinois. At the conclusion of my training, I was hired at the VA in Danville, Illinois until 2021. I also had a part-time private practice, which enhanced my experience in adult psychiatry. I graduated from a prestigious medical school that has consistently held a high position (4th) among the top 100 medical schools in the world.
