I focus on medication management while also implementing elements of supportive, dialectical behavioral, and cognitive behavioral therapy within each session to fully address individual needs. At times, I may recommend a therapist for additional therapy. I am experienced in treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD.

I am double board-certified in psychiatry and consultation-liaison psychiatry. I received my medical degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in the Dominican Republic and completed my psychiatric residency at Lincoln Hospital in New York City. I then completed a consultation liaison fellowship at Morningside and West Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, further acquiring proficiency in caring for patients with complex medical and psychiatric comorbidities. After completing training, I worked in an acute inpatient unit and as a psychiatric consultant for patients admitted to medical units in Oregon.

A California local, I obtained my undergraduate education at University of California, Davis, graduating magna cum laude with a degree in Human Development. My practice is based on a holistic approach to mental health care, with special emphasis on self-care and mindfulness practices in addition to medication treatment. I truly believe that focusing on wellness in conjunction with medication-mediated symptom reduction will lead to better outcomes for patients. I have a lot of experience treating patients with depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, Bipolar type 2, and ADHD, and I often tailor individualized treatment to serve the needs of patients with a variety of conditions. As a result, patients often enjoy the supportive therapy, insight-oriented therapy, and psychoeducation provided during our sessions.

I am a board certified adult psychiatrist and have been in practice since 2010. I received my doctorate degree in medicine at the University of Florida and completed my residency training at the University of Florida, Department of Psychiatry. I am board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I have worked mainly in outpatient settings throughout my career.

I am a psychiatrist interested in the mind-body connection in overall emotional and mental well-being. I have worked extensively with medically complex patients, including a special focus in psycho-oncology with cancer patients. I am double board-certified in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry and have been practicing for over 7 years. Before Talkiatry, I worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. I also worked as an Assistant Professor and was Director of Emergency Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. I have presented nationally at the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and written a book chapter about psycho-oncology.

I attended medical school at John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. I am a psychiatrist specializing in adult and maternal mental health. I develop personalized treatment plans to address anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, PMDD, and perinatal conditions. My goal is to help patients reconnect with their values and live balanced, fulfilled, and meaningful lives. I combine pharmacotherapy (medication) with psychotherapy to create individualized treatment plans. Therapy provides powerful tools to manage thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that support balanced brain chemistry, and research shows that medication helps restore this balance more quickly and effectively, especially in moderate to severe cases.

I liken medication for the brain to fertilizer for a garden. Imagine your mental health as a vibrant garden: when well-nourished, it can thrive with resilience, beauty, and balance. But when symptoms like depression, anxiety, ADHD, or mood instability take hold, they act like invasive weeds, crowding out healthy growth and making it hard to enjoy the space. Medication acts like fertilizer, strengthening the garden's natural systems so the healthy parts can reclaim their place and flourish. Just as some gardens need only seasonal care while others require more consistent tending, medication plans are personalized to support each person's long-term mental wellness. My approach emphasizes diagnostic clarity, medication management, patient education, and brief psychotherapy based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I believe patients should take an active role in understanding their diagnosis and treatment.

Your first appointment is a supportive, in-depth conversation to share your story, challenges, and goals. I will review your medical and psychiatric history and assess symptoms using a whole-person approach that considers biological, psychological, and social factors. Together, we will develop a personalized plan that may include lab work, medication, and therapy. Initial visits last 60 minutes for thorough evaluation; follow-ups typically last 20–30 minutes, focusing on medication management and brief therapy. If needed, I can refer you to in-house or community therapists for add-on therapy support. Throughout your care, I prioritize shared decision making to ensure you feel informed, empowered, and supported.

My passion for medicine began in childhood, inspired by curiosity about the mind and body. I earned an Honors Chemistry degree with magna cum laude and completed my medical training and psychiatry residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. With a strong scientific foundation, I understand the role of medications and embrace holistic healing through connection, gratitude, and spirituality. I have experience in diverse clinical settings and have received national awards including the AWP International Fellowship and ADMSEP Innovations Award. I am dedicated to advancing maternal mental health screening and treatment through clinical care and education.

I am trained in both adult and child & adolescent psychiatry, with a focus on the diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, and ADHD. I emphasize a holistic approach, combining medication management and psychotherapy, and I utilize principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and supportive psychotherapy. This method is supported by research indicating improved patient outcomes.

I received my bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in French from The University of Central Florida. I completed medical school at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a General Psychiatry residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. My professional experience includes working in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, consult-liaison psychiatry, outpatient clinics, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and emergency rooms. This broad range of experience allows me to provide comprehensive, individualized care to patients at all stages of life.

Patients can anticipate a thorough initial evaluation during their first visit with me. I conduct a comprehensive assessment to understand the patient's symptoms, history, and personal circumstances. This session sets the foundation for collaboratively developing an individualized treatment plan focused on the patient's specific needs and goals.

I specialize in treating complex psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, and insomnia. As a proponent of holistic care, I integrate psychotherapy into medication management and emphasize lifestyle modifications and evidence-based integrative medicine. New patients receive comprehensive evaluations to rule out medical causes of symptoms, followed by tailored treatment plans combining therapy, medication, and lifestyle adjustments. Follow-up visits focus on symptom management through supportive, brief dynamic, or cognitive behavioral therapy, with frequent appointments until stabilization is achieved. I am committed to collaborative, patient-centered care that addresses both mental and physical well-being.

I am board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). I earned my medical degree from Kansas City University and completed my psychiatry residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. During medical school, I pursued advanced training as an Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine fellow. I have presented case studies and quality improvement projects at national conferences, including the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Association for Academic Psychiatry.

A combat veteran, I served in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour in Iraq, and was honored with the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a Certificate of Commendation for exemplary leadership.

I took an adventurous path to Talkiatry. After perhaps thinking a little too hard about Intro to Philosophy in college — "the unexamined life is not worth living" — I first used my chemistry degree to work in pharmaceutical research. I changed course, working in computer network engineering, before deciding to find a more meaningful path. I worked as an EMT, then earned a Master's in Physiology before finally landing in medical school at Ohio State.

Finding a surprising interest in psychiatry, I stayed at Ohio State for residency, and then a fellowship in forensic psychiatry. I am board-certified in both Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. I previously worked as a forensic psychiatrist and evaluator at Ohio's maximum-security state psychiatric facility, as an attending psychiatrist running an inpatient unit for violent or dangerous patients, performing court-ordered evaluations, writing reports, and testifying when necessary. I have also worked as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist, performing psychiatric consults at several general hospitals in Central Ohio's largest hospital system.

I found great enjoyment in teaching successive generations of residents and medical students, serving as an adjunct faculty member at Ohio State, Ohio University, Wright State, and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. I am excited for the next chapter of my journey, exploring another area of psychiatry at Talkiatry.

I am a psychiatrist with over thirty years of experience providing medication management as well as supportive psychotherapy to adult patients. I take a positive psychiatry approach to treatment, prescribing medication while supporting patient strengths, social connections, and healthy habits. I provide care for patients with depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and ADHD, and I have worked with university students as well as employees in an employee assistance program.

In my previous role as an Associate Professor at the University of Florida, I conducted research on the increase in depression and anxiety as well as the increased use of psychiatric medications among university students. I have published academic papers and given national talks on these topics with the goal of decreasing stigma and improving mental health care for young adults. I specialize in treating depression and anxiety. I acknowledge that while medications can be necessary, they are not magic, and a holistic approach is essential for achieving mental health. With this understanding, I spend time getting to know my patients, focusing on helping them achieve mental wellness rather than simply prescribing medications. When I became a doctor, I made a pledge to "do no harm." I take this commitment seriously and only prescribe medications, especially those with addictive properties, when it is safe and clearly indicated.

The first one or two appointments focus on a thorough assessment to establish a provisional diagnosis, which is essential for effective treatment planning. Once this initial diagnosis is made, I collaborate with my patients to develop tailored treatment recommendations. During follow-up appointments, I actively listen to my patients and propose adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist. I earned my medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed my residency at the University of Southern California. I have experience working in a variety of settings, including inpatient, outpatient, community mental health, and correctional facilities.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Aetna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with OCD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
