I take a patient-centered approach and emphasize that I, too, am human. Everyone faces challenges at different times and in different ways. I adopt a holistic perspective, recognizing that effective treatment involves understanding how life challenges impact a person as a whole. I am dedicated to providing compassionate, empathetic, and practical care to all my patients. I engage with patients in a way that makes it easy and natural for them to share their stories, and from there I promote a shared decision-making approach to develop the most effective treatment plan. My areas of expertise include psychopharmacology, as well as Cognitive Behavioral, Supportive, and Psychodynamic therapies.

I am a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with nearly 30 years of experience in health care, dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of my community. With a background in both inpatient and outpatient settings, I am committed to helping individuals become the best versions of themselves, no matter where they are in their journey at the time of their first appointment.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, biking, and being outdoors.

I believe in a holistic, integrative approach to mental health. My philosophy centers on identifying the root causes of ailments rather than merely addressing symptoms. I view mental health care as a partnership, where the mind, body, and spirit work together to achieve wellness, and I am committed to fostering a safe, confidential therapeutic alliance. I embrace integrative psychiatry, which combines the best of conventional Western medicine with complementary approaches. This involves a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment tailored to each individual, incorporating psychopharmacology alongside lifestyle adjustments in diet, movement, and breathwork. I collaborate with therapists and other professionals to create a well-rounded treatment plan that honors each patient's unique journey.

I grew up in an immigrant family surrounded by aspiring doctors, and my passion for understanding the human mind and behavior blossomed early. This curiosity led me to pursue extensive medical training abroad, beginning at Kasturba Medical College in Southern India, followed by clerkships at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. I completed my adult psychiatry residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville and specialized further with a child/adolescent fellowship at Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist who takes a genuine interest in my patients and values collaborative decision-making. Over the past 4 years of practicing, I have followed a holistic model of care that accounts for the physical, mental, social, and spiritual needs of the individual. I have a down-to-earth, patient, and warm personality, and pride myself on timeliness and professionalism. Though I focus on medication management, I have a passion for supportive therapy with elements of CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness. I may also recommend that a therapist be included in your care team if more specialized therapy is required.

I graduated summa cum laude from Grove City College and completed medical school at UTMB at Galveston. I finished my residency at Memorial Healthcare System in FL, where I held a leadership position in Graduate Medical Education. I have experience treating a wide range of disorders, including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and addiction, and have worked with adolescent, geriatric, pregnant, and medically complex patients. Growing up in a Korean immigrant household and training in the ethnically diverse South Florida region has informed me of the unique struggles that immigrant populations face. I have a special interest in treating mood and anxiety disorders.

Outside of the office, I enjoy art, cinema, and powerlifting.

I emphasize the importance of truly listening, so patients feel seen and heard. I work collaboratively with my patients to identify their main concerns and to build a treatment plan that feels right for them. I believe treatment should be a shared process in which the patient is empowered and supported in their mental health journey. Taking a "less is more" approach to medication, I focus on minimizing prescriptions while still addressing all of a patient's needs. My goal is to help patients eventually rely more on therapeutic skills than medication. I view treatment as a partnership, balancing my expertise in psychiatry with each patient's lived experience.

I bring over a decade of experience in outpatient psychiatric care, with prior roles providing treatment to juveniles in detention and adults in jail and prison systems across West Virginia. I completed my medical degree at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University and trained in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry at West Virginia University.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional with over 18 years of experience in the field of mental health, including Outpatient, Community Mental Health, and Assertive Community Treatment. I work with adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self-esteem, and PTSD using an eclectic approach to suit individual needs. Other modalities I use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Positive Psychology. I am easy to talk to and my number one priority is to help provide a safe, open, non-judgmental place to share personal experiences. I focus on providing the skills to help manage symptoms while working in tandem with your psychiatrist to provide the best outcome for you.

I received my Master of Social Work degree at Eastern Michigan University and am Certified as a Clinical Trauma Professional. While in Michigan, I worked extensively with Community Mental Health. Initially, I worked as an advocate with clients who were diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness or with a dual diagnosis. I facilitated psychoeducation groups, provided crisis intervention, and case management services. At Henry Ford Allegiance Health, I played an integral role in implementing the integration between physical and mental health, combining a Psychiatric Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic with a Primary Care Practice utilizing General Medical Education Resident Psychiatrists. Moving on to Florida, I worked at the Marion County Jail assessing suicidal risk of inmates and provided brief supportive therapy. Ultimately, I began my own virtual private practice, continuing my passion of helping others find the skills to begin to live again regardless of their imperfections.

I am very down to earth and professionally direct. I practice individualism and treat each patient as their own person. I develop treatment plans with the patient that tailor to each of their individual needs. My treatment styles and modalities include Trauma-Informed Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Grief Therapy.

My typical process when working with patients is to first establish a therapeutic rapport by asking open-ended questions, such as, "Have you been in therapy before, including as a child or teen (if the patient is over 18)?" This helps establish a starting point to build a trusting and individualized relationship. My next question is, "Why did you first enter therapy and were you diagnosed with any mental health disorders?" I continue by asking if the client is or has been on psychotropic medications and what brings them back to therapy. I gather all of this information during the first two sessions and then ask the patient if any skills were built during their therapy journey and if they still utilize those skills. Finally, I administer the ACE Questionnaire to assess for childhood trauma, if the patient is over 18 years of age.

I received my bachelor's degree in Arts and Psychology in 2007 and two master's degrees in science, one in Community Mental Health Counseling and the second in School Counseling Education, in 2011 and 2018. I hold a License in Mental Health Counseling, a Credentialed Alcoholic and Substance Abuse Counseling Certification-Trainee, and a Permanent Certification in School Counseling. I am currently in doctoral school for my School Psychology degree. I am a former Alcohol and Substance Abuse Preventive Worker and Treatment and Therapeutic Foster Care Family Specialist, and I currently practice as an online therapist with my own Mental Health Counseling Private Practice in Buffalo.

I am also the co-founder of an all-girls mentoring and educational program called "Unique Sisters," started in 2014 and owned by my mother, Rhodesia Jackson.

I strive to provide a patient-centered and collaborative approach when developing treatment plans. I specialize in medication management and supportive psychotherapy. My practice is influenced by my training and research in political and medical anthropology, psychoanalysis, and social psychiatry. I view mental health as inseparable from history, culture, and social context, not just neurobiology. My approach ensures patients time to elaborate how their life history shapes their experiences and goals. In a healthcare system that often relies on generic diagnoses and standardized plans, I work with each patient on their own terms, integrating psychotherapy and potential medications to support the pursuit of their unique life possibilities.

I often work with writers, actors, musicians, and visual artists and with journalists, academics, athletes, healthcare workers, and activists, many of whom seek treatment in response to creative blocks, burnout, and relationship struggles. I also have long-term experience working with people who have lived through incarceration, war, torture, migration, childhood abuse, and psychosis, and with those building queer and trans identities and communities.

To facilitate durable changes, I regard psychiatric symptoms as matters to be taken seriously, understood, and worked through, not simply suppressed by medications. I ask patients to actively engage in treatment and often recommend frequent appointments to support this.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist who emphasizes a collaborative approach and strong therapeutic alliance in the treatment of psychiatric conditions. Though my practice focuses on medication management, I advocate for a holistic approach to treatment. I may incorporate elements of various psychotherapies, including supportive, cognitive-behavioral (CBT), and insight-oriented therapy. At times, I may believe that additional therapy is needed for the best outcome and recommend that you bring a dedicated therapist into your care team.

I completed my undergraduate studies at Tulane University. I received my medical degree from Louisiana State University New Orleans School of Medicine, then completed my residency training in general psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. I have experience working with patients of widely varying backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses, and I work primarily with adult patients struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and grief.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with PTSD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
