I bring a casual, easygoing communication style to create a comfortable space where patients feel at ease. I emphasize forming strong therapeutic bonds based on trust, and I combine supportive therapy with medication management. I encourage collaboration with therapists and use evidence-based treatment approaches tailored to each individual's needs. I begin with a thorough understanding of each patient's concerns, history, and goals, then create a personalized treatment plan and work collaboratively with the patient to reach those goals, adjusting care as needed for ongoing progress.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with experience in both outpatient and inpatient psychiatry, as well as addiction medicine. I completed my medical degree at Morehouse School of Medicine and trained at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, where I completed general psychiatry residency and fellowships in addiction and community psychiatry. My experience includes roles in community mental health, academic teaching, and the VA system.

Outside of work, I enjoy music production, soccer, spending time with loved ones, and all dogs.

I employ a collaborative, patient-centered approach, tailoring treatment plans to meet each individual's specific needs. My practice integrates pharmacotherapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and supportive therapy as needed. I specialize in treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD, neuropsychiatric disorders, developmental disorders, and personality disorders. My philosophy is to provide personalized care that makes a meaningful impact at different stages of a patient's life.

I am board-certified in Psychiatry and completed my psychiatry residency training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. With over 14 years of experience, I have worked in a variety of settings, including five years in inpatient psychiatry in Vermont, where I served as Medical Director for a state hospital psychiatric unit and taught medical students. I then spent five years working in an outpatient community mental health center in Pennsylvania before transitioning to telepsychiatry, providing care to individuals in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New York.

During the first visit, patients can expect a comprehensive evaluation focused on understanding their mental health concerns, history, and treatment goals. I take a compassionate and collaborative approach, working closely with patients to create individualized treatment plans, ensuring that each patient receives a balanced and effective combination of medication management and therapeutic interventions suited to their unique needs.

I am an outpatient psychiatrist with experience treating a wide variety of disorders across multiple distinct age groups. I strongly believe in the practice of evidence-based medicine, utilizing the most current research to guide recommendations. I am a strong advocate for patient autonomy and therefore provide psychoeducation on diagnoses and medications so that each patient can make informed decisions which align with their own values. I approach each patient in the context of their individual interests, family dynamics, and life goals. I understand that not every patient requires or desires medication and am comfortable in a number of psychotherapy techniques including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and supportive therapy. I emphasize a trusting and honest therapeutic relationship with my patients.

I completed my undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating summa cum laude while majoring in neuroscience. I attended medical school at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, where I was granted an annual merit scholarship. I then remained at the OSU Wexner Medical Center for residency training. During residency, I developed a particular interest in working with young adults, college students, and athletes, but am comfortable with patients of all ages.

Outside of psychiatry, I enjoy numerous interests including soccer, hockey, music, photography, and video games.

Rather than focus primarily on illness or problems, my approach is to first evaluate patients comprehensively, then utilize what's learned from this to treat and empower them to make and then practice choices that lead to improved health and well-being, using an integrative model that recognizes that mental, physical, social, and spiritual health are one.

I am American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology certified and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. A skilled psychopharmacologist and psychotherapist, I have over 30 years' experience successfully helping people overcome a diverse range of emotional, psychiatric, and addiction challenges.

I was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and am a graduate of Augustana College. I obtained my MD at the USD School of Medicine. My residency was at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, where I was trained in both psychotherapy and biological management of psychiatric challenges. Following residency training, I continued to work with UAMS and the State of Arkansas in research and program development, focusing on implementing and then teaching novel strengths-focused care for people with severe mental illness for the first 12 years of my career. Later, I moved with my wife and three children to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and have since been in clinical practice and leadership roles in inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth psychiatric care settings.

My practice focuses on medication management, which I typically offer in conjunction with supportive therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. Occasionally, I may determine that additional therapy is also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome. In addition to general adult and geriatric psychiatry, my areas of interest include complex psychiatric and medical conditions, neuropsychiatric issues, and treatment-resistant cases. I enjoy using my medical expertise to solve difficult cases. I have an interest in exploring combined traditional psychiatric practice with complementary and holistic approaches to treatment, and I believe in keeping my patients healthy rather than only addressing illness.

I have been practicing for over 20 years in general adult psychiatry. I am board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and hold a certification in Elder Law, which I received through the Mitchell Hamline School of Law. I also have advanced training in psychopharmacology, earned with distinction. I received my medical degree from the University of Toledo, College of Medicine and Life Sciences, where I was given the outstanding medical student award by the Department of Head and Neck Surgery. I completed my internship with the Department of Family Medicine and my residency with the Department of Psychiatry, both at the University of Toledo, College of Medicine and Life Sciences.

Throughout my career, I have served as the Medical Director of two Community Mental Health Centers and as the Corporate Medical Director for a company providing neuropsychiatric and general psychiatric care to patients residing in nursing facilities. I have also been a preceptor for numerous universities and have trained advanced practice providers in psychiatry.

I treat patients of various ages, and in addition to medication management I am a strong proponent of therapy in various forms. My approach to the treatment of adults and children/adolescents incorporates the impact of various things such as family history of mental health/medical conditions as well as any adverse childhood experiences/trauma. In addition to screening for common conditions such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression in all patients, I also emphasize the importance of screening for conditions that can manifest in childhood (such as ADHD, Autism) as well as first-episode psychosis in young adults. From the initial visit and onward, I prioritize a collaborative effort with my patients (and at times their families). In addition to medication adjustments, I emphasize the importance of optimizing additional tools such as therapy while making appropriate lifestyle changes. During every follow-up visit, I take care to ensure that the current treatment is not hindering my patient's progress in any way.

I am board certified in both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I completed my undergraduate studies at Stony Brook University and attended medical school at the American University of Integrative Sciences. I also hold an MBA from Davenport University. I completed my psychiatry residency training at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University, where I served as Chief Fellow. Prior to joining Talkiatry, I trained and worked across a combination of various healthcare systems in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Kentucky.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Aetna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with anxiety?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
