I am an ABPN boarded adult psychiatrist with over 15 years of clinical experience. I obtained my medical degree from the Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra Dominican Republic and completed my residency in adult psychiatry at the University of Florida in Gainesville. After completing training, I became a Clinical Assistant Professor for the University of Florida Department of Psychiatry, where I served students at UF Student Mental Health at the Counseling and Wellness Center and provided treatment to adults in inpatient services and other settings.

I specialize in psychopharmacology and supportive therapy. I perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, develop patient-centered individualized treatment plans, and schedule regular follow-up appointments. I have a wealth of experience in treating patients with depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and anxiety disorders.

I am a double board-certified psychiatrist, board certified in General Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). I am an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and an active member of both the APA and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I received my medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and completed my general psychiatry residency and child-adolescent fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

I have more than 25 years of experience working in the psychiatric profession. I have previously worked extensively in the role of medical director in multiple settings, including a large community mental health center, a child psychiatry inpatient program, an adult and child inpatient residential treatment program, and an outpatient residential day treatment program. I also have 8 years of experience working with the Deaf community.

I am an adult psychiatrist who focuses primarily on medication management in conjunction with supportive therapy. I have a passion for treating adults with mental health disorders, especially within the perinatal population. I have a genuine interest in management of trauma, while also treating a vast array of disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. I completed my undergraduate training at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, followed by my master's in public health degree at New York Medical College. I completed medical school at American University of Antigua and finished my residency in psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern. I have worked with clients of varying cultures and demographics, and have experience treating patients with medical comorbidities.

I am a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Dallas County Medical Society. I have presented my research at the Annual APA conference and am co-author of many published psychiatric papers.

Dr. Elena Perea is a board-certified psychiatrist.  She completed her undergraduate training at Wake Forest University followed by medical school and residency training at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).

Dr. Perea holds an adjunct academic appointment at UNC and has been involved in medical education for her entire career.  She most recently served as Residency Program Director for the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) psychiatry residency in Asheville, NC.  She remains involved in didactic education there for both residents and medical students.

She has a genuine interest in treating a vast array of psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders and obsessive compulsive and related disorders. She is a skilled psychopharmacologist and interested in the mind-body connection. She believes physical health greatly affects mental health and vice versa and loves helping patients with medical comorbidities to feel well.

My diverse training includes significant experience in jail and forensic psychiatry, as well as the treatment of military veterans under the veteran affairs health care system. I have experience in medically assisted treatments (MAT) for substance use disorders, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and family therapy, enabling me to care for patients with complex needs. I treat patients across a wide age range, from young adults to the elderly.

Originally from Puerto Rico, I am fluent in both English and Spanish, which allows me to connect deeply with a diverse patient population. In my previous role as an Associate Professor at the University of Florida, I conducted research on the increase in depression and anxiety as well as the increased use of psychiatric medications among university students. I have published academic papers and given national talks on these topics with the goal of decreasing stigma and improving mental health care for young adults.
