I am committed to providing compassionate, high-quality mental health care. I foster a therapeutic, nonjudgmental environment where patients can openly share their concerns and values. Viewing treatment as a partnership, I encourage patients to play an active role in their care and take a whole-person approach, considering lifestyle, environmental, and social factors that contribute to healing. My clinical interests include mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, and childhood psychiatric disorders.

I begin with a comprehensive assessment to understand each patient's history, background, and treatment priorities. I develop individualized treatment plans using evidence-based approaches, supporting patients in navigating life's challenges and finding a path to mental wellness.

I am Board Certified in Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and treat patients of all ages. I provide cognitive therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, and logotherapy to help my patients gain insight into current stressors related to various diagnoses, including post-traumatic stress, affective mood disorder, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and substance use disorder. I strongly believe that collaborating with a physician for medication management allows patients to be more engaged in therapy, resulting in improved treatment outcomes.

After completing my Master of Arts in Community Counseling in 2012, I spent 7 years fulfilling my passion for integrated care for adults suffering from substance use disorder and mental health challenges. For the past four years, I have been working in private practice with clients exclusively via telehealth. I hold the position of Psychotherapist for Michigan, Florida, and South Carolina at Talkiatry.

I believe that the key to success in mental health care is being able to establish a trusting and open relationship between psychiatrist and patient. I feel comfortable working with a wide range of age groups and enjoy treating challenges with anxiety, mood, sleep, and concentration. While initial sessions include the need to gather background information about the patient overall as well as the symptoms of concern, subsequent sessions are focused on learning the impact of the treatment.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who attended the University of Iowa Medical School and completed my psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I have extensive experience treating active-duty service members, family members of active duty, and the veteran population.

I understand that beginning counseling can feel intimidating, and I strive to create a safe, welcoming environment where therapy moves at the patient's pace. I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy while incorporating elements of Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused approaches, Strength-Based methods, Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Drawing on my multicultural background, I respect and honor each individual's unique experiences and cultures. I believe no concern is too large or too small to address in therapy and emphasize collaboration at every stage.

I view the first appointment as a chance to build trust, explore how the patient and I can work together, and establish goals for therapy. I provide a clear framework for what to expect, welcome questions, and encourage open communication throughout the process. Understanding that sharing personal history can be difficult, I am committed to moving at a pace that feels comfortable and supportive for each patient.

I bring more than 20 years of experience to my work as a therapist, having served in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, hospital, and community mental health settings, as well as leadership roles such as managing the social services department at a crisis stabilization facility. I earned my MS in Clinical/Counseling Psychology and Ed.S. in School Psychology from Valdosta State University, and a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Loyola University in New Orleans. I hold licenses in Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, and South Carolina (LPC, LCMHC, LMHC, CPCS) and am also trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

My goal is to create a safe, judgment-free space where you will feel comfortable and heard. I understand that having a strong therapeutic alliance is equally as important as accurate diagnosing and medication management. I strongly believe in a patient-centered model, in which medical decision-making is driven by patient preferences. My job is to empower patients to make informed decisions regarding their mental health. While working together, I will get to know you and will be open to you sharing as much or as little about yourself as you would like.

I was born and raised in Charleston, SC. I attended the College of Charleston for undergraduate studies, where I double majored in Psychology and Spanish. I then completed medical school, General Psychiatry Residency, and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. I am the first member of my family to become a physician. My passion for mental health and my desire to help others are what paved the way for me to become a well-trained and highly motivated psychiatrist.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Cigna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with PTSD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
