I believe in collaborative and educational approaches to address my clients' needs. I believe that therapy is a foundational part of building a long-term therapeutic relationship with my clients. I try to incorporate an educational component to help my clients develop a deeper understanding of their illness and related struggles and needs. I like to follow up closely regarding progress toward my clients' goals. I integrate psychoeducation into all sessions, explaining my reasoning behind the choice of treatment options based on evidence-based medicine. I also provide brief supportive psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to aid in treatment for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. My areas of focus have been anxiety disorders, acute stress and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Tics and Tourette Syndrome, insomnia, and depression. I have also worked with adults with bipolar illness and pregnancy-related anxiety and depression, and with clients experiencing psychiatric illness due to underlying neurological issues such as seizures, Multiple Sclerosis, and neurocognitive issues, along with addressing caregiver burden for some clients. I tend to approach treatment with individualized plans based on different needs for different clients and will always welcome any questions regarding the plan to reach a client's goals.

I am an Adult General Psychiatrist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, practicing for 4 years. I received my medical degree from PramukhSwami Medical College in India and completed my residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in my hometown of Houston, Texas. I held an academic position as Assistant Professor with the University of Texas Health Science Center, McGovern Medical School in Houston, where I enjoyed teaching opportunities. During my residency training, I was extensively involved in clinical research examining neurobiological and psychological aspects of the development of different anxiety disorders and bipolar disorders as early as in childhood populations. I have publications in several peer-reviewed articles and manuscripts and have presented at annual conferences.

My practice centers around treating the whole patient: mind, body, and spirit. I believe the judicious use of psychiatric medications, coupled with psychotherapy and alternative treatments such as meditation and yoga, can bring about transformative changes in the lives of those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions and life issues. In addition to general adult psychiatry, I received extensive training in one of the nation's largest women's mood disorder programs at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and enjoy treating peripartum and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. I am also well trained in addiction medicine and received additional training in buprenorphine use for opioid addiction.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist who has been in practice for over 10 years. I graduated with Honors in Psychology from The University of Florida, received my medical degree from The University of South Alabama School of Medicine, completed a clinical postdoctoral research fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine, and completed my Psychiatry residency training at The University of North Carolina. I am currently obtaining my MBA. After residency, I worked as a psychiatric hospitalist at Trident Medical Center in Charleston and have also worked in private practice. Most recently I served as Chief Medical Officer for an 80-bed psychiatric hospital, Coral Shores Behavioral Hospital in Stuart, FL. I have worked in inpatient units, private practice, and community mental health, as well as served as Chief Medical Officer of a large psychiatric hospital. In 2018 I was awarded the Charleston Choice Award for Best Psychiatrist in Charleston, South Carolina. I currently reside in South Florida.

My clinical approach is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and I continually expand my knowledge by incorporating tools from a variety of therapeutic modalities. I am fascinated with the connectedness of the conscious and subconscious mind, body, and spirit, and I approach treatment through the lens of a growth mindset. I prioritize creating a safe space where patients can strengthen their courage to be vulnerable and authentic. I view therapy as a journey of helping patients explore their inner world, where I act as a mirror in order for patients to gain insight into their motivations, patterns, values, and higher purpose.

I prefer knowing my patients on a deep level and highly value the therapeutic process, which requires patience over speed. I acknowledge that it takes many sessions before even a preliminary understanding of the human being in front of me can be formulated. I honor the truth that my patients are the experts of themselves, and I prefer empowering them over micromanagement. As subconscious patterns emerge, I highlight these, as they are often blind spots to the patient. I understand that when it comes to mental health, quick fixes are not the most appropriate or effective means to healing. However, I respect the use of medications when indicated in addition to talk therapy.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Nicholls State University and a Master of Science in Acupuncture from Texas Health and Science University. I completed both my MD and General Psychiatry training at Texas Tech Paul Foster School of Medicine, followed by specialized training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Texas School of Medicine.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Aetna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
