I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience. I earned my medical degree from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston and completed residency training at Texas & M-Scott & White in Temple. I am happily married, with two wonderful adult sons and a lovely daughter-in-law. My hobbies are reading, sports, music, and history.

Psychiatry has always been more than just a job, as I chose this calling at the age of 14 after growing up with a severely mentally-ill mother. This experience has shaped my style as a provider - seeing each person as more than just another "patient." I will empathetically listen to you in a non-judgemental fashion to understand your detailed history, and will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan.

I use pharmacology and supportive therapy, as well as mindfulness and motivational interviewing. I respond quickly to your inquiries and pride myself on keeping up to date with the latest in psychiatry.

I have practiced clinical Psychiatry, predominantly in the outpatient setting, with over a decade of post-graduate inpatient experience, since completing my psychiatric residency at the University of Connecticut Health Sciences Center in 2008. Prior, I received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, graduating with high honors, and a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 2004. I have been certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology since 2009.

I am a collaborative physician, interested in the full picture of a patient’s life and inviting questions and discussion about what is and is not pathology, and which treatment plans fit an individual’s goals and lifestyle. I am often praised as “the only one who ever explains things,” and have won awards as the best mental health provider in my region twice in recent years.

With a substantial background in psychotherapeutic training, I work to minimize and justify the role of psychotropic medication in my patients’ lives, regularly reviewing propriety and necessity. Front and center is always quality of life, not impersonal diagnostic categories. I strive to help my patients “meet themselves where they are” as individuals, with an emphasis on resilience. My ultimate goal is to no longer be necessary.

Dr. Noman Afzal is a double board-certified psychiatrist with over 15 years of experience treating conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. He completed his psychiatry residency at Albany Medical College and a Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Rochester. He lives in Houston, Texas, and enjoys spending time with his family, being outdoors, and playing or watching soccer, pickleball, and basketball.

Dr. Afzal enjoys getting to know each patient and believes treatment should be individualized rather than based on a generic diagnosis. He works collaboratively with patients to develop the best treatment plan, whether that includes medication, talk therapy, or both.

I graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BS in Health and Society. I completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Psychiatry Residency Training at FAU Schmidt College of Medicine. I am psychodynamically trained and trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. My experience spans inpatient, emergency, outpatient and Veterans Affairs psychiatry, including PTSD and substance abuse.

I am passionate about mental health, with a focus not only on treating illness but also on promoting overall well-being. I offer a warm, friendly, non-judgmental approach and seek to understand the whole person, including their story and struggles. I do not believe I alone can change a patient, but can help the patient help him/herself. I offer supportive therapy, CBT-style approaches, and interpersonal communication skills development based on patient needs. I want patients to feel comfortable, safe, and able to speak freely.

I start with a self-introduction and spend a few minutes listening before discussing the chief complaint. I use open-ended questions to understand family, medical, social, and psychiatric history. I consider organic causes and request baseline labs. By the first or second session, I aim to have a big picture that we fill in over time. Sydney Horton, DO, is a psychiatrist with experience practicing in child, adolescent, and adult outpatient and inpatient settings, including acute and long-term care. Dr. Horton earned a medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed general psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship training at UT Tyler Health Science Center in Tyler, TX. She has expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder in children and adolescents.

Dr. Horton aims to create a collaborative environment where patients feel comfortable communicating openly and honestly about their symptoms and treatment goals. She values working together to ensure each patient feels respected and that their individual goals are being met.

Dr. Charlena Melnyk is a compassionate psychiatrist specializing in adult mental health care for patients ages 18–64. She has experience in academic, consultation and liaison, and outpatient psychiatry, with expertise in diagnostic evaluation and individualized treatment planning. Dr. David Schlager is a board-certified psychiatrist with extensive experience across inpatient, outpatient, and telemedicine settings. Dr. Schlager earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, completed his psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, and completed a research fellowship at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute, where he later conducted research focused on seasonal depression and sleep disorders.

Over long years of practice Dr. Schlager has witnessed, and so in every new case aims for, marked improvement in both emotional distress and day to day function.
