I am a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with a passion for helping others achieve their goals through medication management and psychotherapy. I am trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and supportive therapy, and I have experience supporting individuals with depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and ADHD. I am an LGBTQIA+ affirming provider who believes in empowering individuals in their lives. I earned my Master of Science in Nursing with a specialty in psychiatry from Stony Brook University and a nursing practice degree from Chatham University. My previous experience includes two years at Columbia University Medical Center on an inpatient psychiatric unit and four years on the medical consultation-liaison psychiatric team, where I treated patients with a range of acute and chronic medical conditions while providing medication management and psychotherapy. My work at Columbia involved treating a wide spectrum of psychiatric conditions with the goal of achieving symptom remission. Additionally, I have practiced at a private clinic in New York City, focusing on interventional techniques such as TMS and ketamine therapy, alongside medication management and psychotherapy.

I approach care through a collaborative, patient-centered lens. I believe trust, confidentiality, and open communication are essential to effective treatment. I begin by listening carefully and gathering a thorough history to understand each patient's challenges and strengths, then partner with patients to develop individualized treatment plans using current, evidence-based interventions. My process emphasizes empathy, collaboration, and ongoing support to promote long-term mental health and overall well-being.

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I bring extensive experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, with expertise in trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, and thought disorders, while remaining attentive to each patient's unique needs and goals. I have a deep respect for each individual's story and value creating a safe, supportive, and healing environment.

Outside of clinical practice, I enjoy learning Spanish and spending time hiking with my dog, Mavis.

My presence at Talkiatry brings my career full circle and back to my greatest joy as a psychiatrist: working directly with patients one-on-one to help them integrate the complexity of their feelings, beliefs, and personal reality in the context of an increasingly complicated world around them. I take a compassionate, individualized, and pragmatic approach to treatment, beginning in the first visit with a full history and discussion with the patient of their symptoms, challenges, and goals. Follow-up visits are tailored to the patient's evolving needs and combine shared insights and tools such as medications and behavioral practices to support them as I guide them on their unique journey toward their best life, on their terms.

My qualifications include a B.A. in biology from Harvard University and an M.D. from Tufts School of Medicine. I completed psychiatry residencies at Mt. Sinai and Brown and am board certified in both Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. My four decades of practice have exposed me to an eclectic range of cultures, ethnicities, and pathologies in a wide variety of settings, from solo practice to regional medical centers to academic institutions. This breadth and depth of clinical and life experience have helped me transcend cultural biases and institutional conventions and to more clearly see each patient as a uniquely complex and lovable individual.

I have additional interests in trauma work; women's mental health, specifically in the peripartum period; and in working with individuals facing progressive diseases or terminal diagnoses.

I am a recent graduate of the psychiatry residency program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. During my residency, I sought out additional training in psychodynamic therapy and EMDR. I participated in the Psych Scholars track, which provided in-depth education and supervision around therapy and psychoanalytic theory. This allows me to better understand the role of both medication and therapy, to utilize, when to couple them, and what limitations they may have.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist. From traditional psychodynamic therapy to the more modern mindfulness-based dialectical behavior therapy, I take the approach that best serves my patients. In addition to being trained in a variety of therapies, I also employ a positive psychiatry approach which, as well as addressing a patient's symptoms, also focuses on their strengths and how they can be used to overcome adversity.

I completed my residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. In addition to being thoroughly trained in psychopharmacology, I have also received extensive training in psychotherapy.

Prior to pursuing a career in psychiatry, I was a high school math teacher, and prior to that, I was an NCAA Division I college athlete. My teaching and athletic careers have given me a well-rounded perspective on the human experience. Drawing on my academic training and life experiences, I meet patients where they are at, help them overcome their obstacles, and serve as a guide and a resource for them on their journey to their desired destination.

I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mind-Body Approach, Mindfulness-Based Therapy, and Prolonged Grief Disorder (where the patient is experiencing grief for at least 12 months). As I am trained in several different treatment modalities, I can customize therapy to meet everyone's needs.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has worked in the mental health field since 2013. I completed my undergraduate and graduate education in Alabama. During graduate school, I completed internships at the Tuscaloosa County jail, the University of Alabama Student Veterans Center, and the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center in their Health Care for Homeless Veterans program. In 2013, I moved to Arizona to work with the Department of Veterans Affairs to continue working with homeless veterans. I also have experience teaching at Pima Community College and serve as a clinical supervisor for associate level clinicians through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. My prior working experience and training has been with adults, homeless veterans, Native Americans, LGBTQIA, women, and individuals in rural or remote areas, providing access to much needed mental health services in provider shortage areas.

Although I specialize in medication management of psychiatric conditions, supportive psychotherapy is often incorporated into my visits, as I believe a combined approach leads to a more robust treatment response. Additionally, I aim to enhance wellness through discussion of lifestyle modifications that emphasize quality sleep, a healthy diet, and regular exercise.

Initial appointments consist of a psychiatric evaluation and discussion of evidence-based treatment options. If telehealth is deemed to be an appropriate modality and pharmacotherapy is recommended, discussion will consist of selecting a suitable medication to address target symptoms while minimizing adverse effects. Follow-up visits focus on assessing treatment response and adjusting regimens to optimize outcomes.

I earned my medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson and completed my residency at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. I am board-certified in psychiatry and provide care for adult patient populations. Prior to my career in medicine, I proudly served in the U.S. Air Force.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from United Healthcare?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with depression?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
