I believe that every patient brings their own mosaic of experiences embedded in a unique story. I understand that building a strong therapeutic relationship through empathy, compassion, trust, and respect is essential. I enjoy taking time to understand my patients' goals, offer psychoeducation, and create a collaborative plan for treatment with the patient. I believe in a holistic approach to mental health treatment, which includes medication management, supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, as well as mind-body medicine techniques. I also have a special interest in psychodynamic therapy, an in-depth therapy modality, which I incorporate in all patient interactions and sessions.

I am a board-certified Adult Psychiatrist. I received my undergraduate degree from Wayne State University in Detroit and completed my medical degree at Oakland University William Beaumont in Rochester, MI. I am a graduate of the Adult Psychiatry Residency Program at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, MI, and I have also completed a psychotherapy fellowship through the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.

Due to the diversity and richness of culture in southeast Michigan, I have experience working with patients from varied backgrounds. I enjoy the challenge such a heterogeneous environment brings and am particularly fond of working with young adults experiencing life transitions. I also have experience working with patients from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as adolescents and geriatric populations.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist at Talkiatry with extensive experience working with a wide range of diagnoses and patient populations. I have a particular interest in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD, and I have additional training in college mental health. I believe in the importance of getting to know each of my patients and the unique issues that bring them into treatment. My approach involves collaborating with patients to create personalized treatment plans and considering both medication and non-medication methods.

I am from California and completed my undergraduate studies at the University of California, Davis. I obtained my medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine and then trained at Stanford University's Adult Psychiatry Residency Program. I subsequently completed a fellowship in student mental health at Stanford University. Most recently, I worked as an outpatient psychiatrist at The Permanente Medical Group.

In my free time, I enjoy traveling, trying new foods, and spending time with friends and family.

I take a collaborative and compassionate approach to both medication management and psychotherapy. I enjoy utilizing various forms of psychotherapy to empower individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives, and I particularly enjoy incorporating elements of supportive, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioral therapies in all visits. I practice thoughtful and evidence-based medication management. I enjoy working with students and adults with anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and mood disorders, and I also have a special interest in women's mental health.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist. I completed my undergraduate education at Johns Hopkins University, where I graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor's in neuroscience, and I later attended medical school at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. My interest in neuroscience, combined with a passion for the humanistic side of medicine, led me to pursue a psychiatry residency at NYU, where I gained experience working with a diverse patient population. After completing residency in 2018, I chose to pursue private practice to allow more time with patients and to build on my interest in psychotherapy. I spent over 6 years in solo and group private practice in Los Angeles. I am committed to working with insurance-based practices, as I am passionate about providing affordable access to quality healthcare.

I believe that you need to take a whole-person approach to both mental and physical health. I use an integrated health paradigm with general and geriatric patients, drawing on traditional psychopharmacology, interpersonal neurobiology practices, and personality assessments to look at root motivations for behaviors, address core issues, and incorporate medication management as needed. My focus includes an integrated approach to the consideration of mental and physical health while incorporating mindfulness tools to teach skills of stress and anxiety management in everyday life. In conjunction with medication management, I use interpersonal neurobiology to help clients understand triggers as well as methods to calm overactive stress responses and reactivity.

I am a Stanford-trained board-certified psychiatrist and am board-eligible for geriatric psychiatry from UCSD, with 30 years of practice across a variety of settings. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and then attended Stanford Medical School to complete my MD. With visions of becoming a general surgeon, I went to the University Hospitals of Cleveland and completed two years of general surgery training before transferring to psychiatry. I completed my psychiatry training at Stanford University and my geriatric training many years later at UCSD.

I strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment for my patients. I listen with empathy and compassion, ensuring that every individual feels heard and safe throughout their care. I took an adventurous path to Talkiatry. After perhaps thinking a little too hard about Intro to Philosophy in college — "the unexamined life is not worth living" — I first used my chemistry degree to work in pharmaceutical research. I changed course, working in computer network engineering, before deciding to find a more meaningful path. I worked as an EMT, then earned a Master's in Physiology before finally landing in medical school at Ohio State.

Finding a surprising interest in psychiatry, I stayed at Ohio State for residency, and then a fellowship in forensic psychiatry. I am board-certified in both Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. I previously worked as a forensic psychiatrist and evaluator at Ohio's maximum-security state psychiatric facility, as an attending psychiatrist running an inpatient unit for violent or dangerous patients, performing court-ordered evaluations, writing reports, and testifying when necessary. I have also worked as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist, performing psychiatric consults at several general hospitals in Central Ohio's largest hospital system.

I found great enjoyment in teaching successive generations of residents and medical students, serving as an adjunct faculty member at Ohio State, Ohio University, Wright State, and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. I am excited for the next chapter of my journey, exploring another area of psychiatry at Talkiatry.

I provide a therapeutic medication management visit, which incorporates therapeutic techniques tailored to the individual patient's needs while adjusting medication doses. My goal is to help patients manage their symptoms while working towards, over time, uncovering the root causes. This comprehensive process helps to empower my patients and provides hope and acceptance of their psychiatric challenges. If indicated, I may believe that additional therapy is also needed and recommend that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry and have completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I attended medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine and completed my training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, followed by Tulane University School of Medicine, where I was a chief resident. I have worked in hospital systems, private practice, and most recently telemedicine.

When not practicing, I enjoy all things water, cooking, and spending time with my daughter and dog.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Blue Cross Blue Shield?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with anxiety?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
