My approach is to help you ultimately feel better and move forward with a hopeful plan involving medication management, education about your illness, and therapy to manage your emotional and environmental stressors. I strive to meet your expectations. Recognizing the challenges and complexities of mental health conditions, I also encourage input from your established care provider, therapist, and loved ones who want to be involved in your care, as I feel such collaboration provides optimal treatment. I have interests in mood disorders during and after pregnancy, and immigrant and refugee mental health.

I am board-certified in both psychiatry and family medicine. Prior to joining Talkiatry, I worked in a busy Minneapolis emergency room for 20 years, caring for patients presenting in mental health crisis, treating their acute presentation, and helping find solutions to their concerns, ranging from starting and adjusting medications to identifying and addressing contributing factors such as medical illness, substance use, and life stressors. I have also worked as a psychiatrist in an integrated primary care clinic. I have extensive experience and can comfortably manage a wide range of illnesses and problems. I see patients of all ages and ethnicities, including LGBTQ+ populations.

I have taught and supervised medical students, psychiatric residents/fellows, and family medicine residents. I have collaborated extensively with social workers, therapists, and other health care providers to achieve the best outcomes for my patients. I work on staying current with the latest evidence-based care and mental health treatments.

I am an adult psychiatrist at Talkiatry who practices compassionate, patient-centered care. As a multiracial psychiatrist, I serve diverse communities and focus on treatment plans that respect each patient's background. I treat various diagnoses, including trauma, mood, personality, and eating disorders, with a particular interest in the student and LGBTQ+ communities. Using a range of skills and interventions from psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mentalization-based therapy (MBT), I prioritize a collaborative approach. I ensure patients are actively involved in shaping their treatment, including decisions about medication and supplements. This cooperation allows for personalized care plans that align with each patient's needs, values, and goals. Recognizing that cultural influences, substance use, financial constraints, and other societal factors impact mental health, I examine these personal aspects to provide effective, holistic care in a non-judgmental space.

I graduated from McGovern Medical School (UT Houston) and completed my residency in psychiatry at the University of Chicago. I aim to make healthcare more accessible and affordable, driving systemic changes in mental health care.

My practice focuses on medication management, typically in conjunction with supportive therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. On occasion, I may believe that additional therapy is also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome. I am double board-certified in geriatric and adult psychiatry.

I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and my medical degree from Penn State University. Following medical school, I completed general psychiatry residency training at the University of Connecticut, where I was Chief Resident of outpatient psychiatric services. During that time, I was also chosen as an Honors Scholar by the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry. After training, I moved to California to complete my geriatric psychiatry fellowship at Stanford. Following my fellowship, I worked at Kaiser Permanente in clinical roles of outpatient, geriatric, and C/L.

I strive to create a supportive environment where patients feel heard, respected, and understood. My approach emphasizes a holistic, whole-person method to healing, guided by the patient's own goals and values. I integrate psychotherapy with medication management, drawing on my background in psychodynamic psychopharmacology and acceptance and commitment therapy. I focus on understanding each patient as a whole to create individualized treatment plans. This begins with a comprehensive history during the initial session to identify biopsychosocial factors. Treatment is then tailored to align with the patient's unique goals and values, promoting meaningful progress.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned my medical degree from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. I completed my psychiatry residency at Loyola University Medical Center. I have experience practicing across outpatient, PHP, IOP, and inpatient settings.

I believe that every patient brings their own mosaic of experiences embedded in a unique story. I understand that building a strong therapeutic relationship through empathy, compassion, trust, and respect is essential. I enjoy taking time to understand my patients' goals, offer psychoeducation, and create a collaborative plan for treatment with the patient. I believe in a holistic approach to mental health treatment, which includes medication management, supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, as well as mind-body medicine techniques. I also have a special interest in psychodynamic therapy, an in-depth therapy modality, which I incorporate in all patient interactions and sessions.

I am a board-certified Adult Psychiatrist. I received my undergraduate degree from Wayne State University in Detroit and completed my medical degree at Oakland University William Beaumont in Rochester, MI. I am a graduate of the Adult Psychiatry Residency Program at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, MI, and I have also completed a psychotherapy fellowship through the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.

Due to the diversity and richness of culture in southeast Michigan, I have experience working with patients from varied backgrounds. I enjoy the challenge such a heterogeneous environment brings and am particularly fond of working with young adults experiencing life transitions. I also have experience working with patients from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as adolescents and geriatric populations.

I believe in building a strong therapeutic alliance grounded in empathy, respect, and curiosity. I value collaboration and open communication, ensuring that patients feel like active partners in their care. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where individuals feel understood as whole people, not defined solely by their symptoms. I also prioritize incorporating cultural background and social determinants of health, including financial stressors and systemic barriers, into treatment planning.

In my work, I begin by taking time to understand each patient's unique story, experiences, and goals. I approach care through a trauma-informed lens and with cultural sensitivity to ensure treatment feels safe, respectful, and relevant. My process integrates evidence-based approaches, including psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), while tailoring care plans to meet both clinical needs and patient preferences. I regularly check in on progress, invite feedback, and adjust treatment collaboratively to support an ongoing, responsive therapeutic process.

I received my BA in Biology from the University of Chicago and my medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. I returned to the University of Chicago to complete my psychiatry residency, where I served as Chief Resident of the outpatient psychiatry clinics and was a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. I have experience treating patients across inpatient, outpatient, and consultation-liaison psychiatry settings, with additional training in treatment-resistant depression, trauma, neuropsychiatry, ECT, ketamine, geriatric psychiatry, student counseling, LGBTQ+ mental health, women's mental health, and culturally sensitive care.

I strive to create a warm, supportive, and empathetic environment where patients feel heard, respected, and actively engaged in their treatment journey. In the first session, I work to gain a thorough understanding of each patient's history, current concerns, and long-term goals, and then develop a personalized treatment plan aligned with those goals. My approach balances symptom improvement with medication tolerability and incorporates therapies that further enhance outcomes.

I bring over 30 years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings and have held leadership roles, including serving as Medical Director across various clinical programs. My practice is influenced by my training and research in political and medical anthropology, psychoanalysis, and social psychiatry. I view mental health as inseparable from history, culture, and social context, not just neurobiology. My approach ensures patients time to elaborate how their life history shapes their experiences and goals. In a healthcare system that often relies on generic diagnoses and standardized plans, I work with each patient on their own terms, integrating psychotherapy and potential medications to support the pursuit of their unique life possibilities.

I often work with writers, actors, musicians, and visual artists and with journalists, academics, athletes, healthcare workers, and activists, many of whom seek treatment in response to creative blocks, burnout, and relationship struggles. I also have long-term experience working with people who have lived through incarceration, war, torture, migration, childhood abuse, and psychosis, and with those building queer and trans identities and communities.

To facilitate durable changes, I regard psychiatric symptoms as matters to be taken seriously, understood, and worked through, not simply suppressed by medications. I ask patients to actively engage in treatment and often recommend frequent appointments to support this.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Blue Cross Blue Shield?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
