This combination of skills allows for comprehensive care that addresses both mental and physical health challenges. My holistic approach ensures that each patient receives tailored treatment, fostering improved outcomes and overall well-being.

I was born and raised in Malta, where I attended medical school and worked in internal medicine for several years before moving to New York in 2017. I believe in a mind-body interconnection, and strive to address both aspects to provide truly holistic care. I am passionate about treating ADHD, and utilize medications plus skill building in my sessions to help my patients maximize their potential. My extensive experience also includes treating mood disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and OCD. I work in partnership with patients to find a treatment plan that will be effective, while also being sensitive to financial or insurance coverage factors that may impact care.

I am a double board certified psychiatrist in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Following completion of my training, I spent the next 10 years fulfilling my passion for indigent care of children, working in a community mental health center. I went on to complete additional training in Functional Medicine, with the goal of offering patients greater insight into the physical factors contributing to their symptoms. I have also trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and encourage mindfulness as a healing technique along with medication management. Over the following 10 years, I treated a broad range of patients in a private practice setting, including children and adults.

My primary focus is holistic care, taking into consideration all physical, psychological, interpersonal, and environmental factors when creating unique treatment plans. I strongly believe that all of these factors are interconnected and play a significant role in any individual's mental health and vitality. My goal is to work with clients to create a safe, non-judgmental, and collaborative treatment environment that promotes sustained healing and positive self-development. My practice focuses on medication management. Occasionally, I may believe that additional therapy is also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome.

I am a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. My academic journey began with a B.S. in Biology from the University at Albany. I later received my B.S. in Nursing from Pace University and attained my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner M.S. from Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, graduating magna cum laude. For the last seven years, I have diligently provided care to our nation's veterans, working on a dual diagnosis inpatient psychiatric unit in the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. In my time at the VA, I have gained extensive experience in managing substance abuse and co-morbid psychiatric disorders. In addition, while attending Hunter College, I completed a yearlong clinical rotation at Casa Promesa, a mental health outpatient and inpatient facility that services some of the most vulnerable and underserved populations in the South Bronx.

I use an integrative approach to health in my psychiatric practice, combining evidence-based concepts in neurobiology with psychological, social, and spiritual/existential worldviews to understand and treat every patient. My primary practice is medication management, and I also integrate elements of psychotherapy into my work, typically within 30-minute follow-up visits. In addition to medication and psychotherapy, I incorporate wellness tools into visits, such as mindfulness exercises and sleep management strategies. If I believe that additional psychotherapy is needed, I will recommend that you add a therapist to your care team. My primary focus is working with adults with mood and anxiety disorders, trauma symptoms, ADHD, and problems with sleep. I enjoy working with people facing life transitions, especially older adults and women who are struggling with mental health challenges related to pregnancy and post-partum health. I have extensive experience working with people from many stages of life, with diverse world views and cultural backgrounds. I have always had an inclusive practice and welcome people who identify as LBGTQIA+.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine. I received my medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical School and my PhD in Neurobiology from The Rockefeller University. I completed my Psychiatry residency and Sleep Medicine Fellowship training at the New York University Medical Center. Prior to joining Talkiatry, I was working at Hartford Healthcare with adults in intensive outpatient programs and at Hackensack Meridian Health outpatient clinics. I was the medical director of the Consultation Liaison Service at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and an assistant professor at UMass Medical School.

I have published and presented widely on topics related to Wellness in Psychiatry, Ethics, and Sleep Medicine. I am an advocate for finding your voice in medical decision-making. As part of my own life path, I became an Interfaith Minister and enjoy including spirituality and the supportive role it can play in healing for my patients. I also enjoy using sound healing for relaxation and stress management.

I prioritize building a strong therapeutic relationship and value open communication to create a supportive environment for healing. I view psychiatry as a holistic practice, integrating evidence-based approaches that address mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. I begin each appointment with open conversation to better understand each individual's story and experiences, working with patients to identify their concerns, explore barriers to growth, and highlight strengths. Together, we collaborate on a treatment plan that aligns with the patient's personal goals, ensuring care is both personalized and empowering. Patients working with me can expect compassion, respect, and a collaborative partnership in their care.

I bring more than seven years of experience as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse at Lindner Center of HOPE, a full-service psychiatric facility affiliated with the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital. I take a holistic, collaborative, and non-judgmental approach to mental health care. I strongly believe that each person's struggle is unique, and that solutions and treatments should be individualized based on the person's goals. Having experienced childhood trauma myself, I am particularly passionate about and experienced in treating C-PTSD, OCD, ADHD, and borderline personality disorder. My focus is on helping others find peace, whether momentary or lasting, in their chaotic and often overwhelming lives.

I graduated from Boston College with my MSN after many years of working in inpatient psychiatry at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA, and I have over a decade of experience in mental health care. I have worked in various outpatient settings, first in Boston and more recently in Las Vegas, gaining extensive experience with individuals from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

The first appointment includes a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and a discussion about your goals for treatment. While pharmacological treatment may be part of the plan, I prefer to focus on the therapeutic aspect of care, as I believe therapy is an essential component of healing. You can expect to collaboratively create a treatment plan that you feel comfortable with, rather than simply being told what to do.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Blue Cross Blue Shield?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
