My passion lies in holistic, compassionate, and evidence-based care for a wide range of conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and life transitions. I bring extensive experience in comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and psychotherapy, utilizing cognitive-behavioral (CBT), psychodynamic, supportive, and dialectical behavioral (DBT) therapy approaches. I create a warm, respectful environment where patients feel heard and valued, and I encourage autonomy through mental health education and open dialogue, working to ensure patients are informed and engaged in their treatment. I prioritize empathy and trust, believing a strong doctor-patient relationship is key to achieving lasting therapeutic outcomes.

I begin with a comprehensive understanding of each patient's history, concerns, and goals. I develop individualized treatment plans and incorporate psychotherapy into each session to align with patient goals and enhance treatment response. Patient goals are revisited regularly to adapt plans as progress is made.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who earned my medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston after completing my undergraduate studies at Texas Lutheran University. I was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and completed my psychiatry residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. I have provided psychiatric care in outpatient settings across Louisiana and North Carolina, focusing on adult and young adult populations.

I approach medication management with an emphasis on shared decision-making within safe, effective options, thorough counseling about what to expect in treatment, and giving attention to the concurrent use of non-medication modalities of treatment alongside optimizing medication. I am accustomed to working with people who have more than one diagnosis. I am skilled and experienced in de-prescribing (methodically streamlining the number of medications being taken) when needed. Patients can see me for medication management, therapy, or both.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry. I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 2004. I was selected for the Health Professions Scholarship Program and completed my residency in 2008 at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia, where I was chief resident. Following residency, I deployed to Kuwait as a medical officer. I have taught and supervised residents at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I left active duty in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. After becoming a civilian, I went into solo practice, then joined Potomac Behavioral Solutions in 2014, where I served as medical director. I am a past president of the Virginia Psychoanalytic Society. I also lecture advanced mental health professionals for Lingyu International Psychology Centre based in Toronto.

I bring empathy, attentiveness, and a non-judgmental approach to every patient interaction. I am deeply committed to ensuring patients feel heard, respected, and understood. Patients can expect me to be thorough and dedicated, consistently advocating for their overall wellness throughout the course of treatment. Understanding that beginning mental health care can be difficult, I start with friendly, casual questions to build rapport, asking about patients' background, interests, and current life situation. I then review their medical and psychiatric history before exploring current symptoms and stressors. Together, the patient and I collaborate to create a personalized treatment plan.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2011 and completed my medical degree at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 2017. I completed my residency in psychiatry at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, in 2021, where I was selected as Chief Resident. I have extensive experience in both outpatient and deployed settings, having completed two operational tours with the U.S. Navy. During these tours, I served in Embedded Mental Health Clinics and aboard deployed ships, working directly with Sailors.

I am passionate about and very experienced in providing a holistic approach along with evidence-based care for patients battling depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADHD, and PTSD. I integrate supportive psychotherapy along with medication management and lifestyle changes such as nutrition, exercise, sleep hygiene, and stress management. I am a board-certified psychiatrist in General psychiatry. I completed my medical degree at St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. After completing my residency at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, I transitioned to an attending psychiatrist at the same place where I completed my residency. During my initial years as an attending, I took care of my own patients and supervised third year residents in the outpatient setting. After a few years, I transitioned to an inpatient setting, where I treated both voluntary and involuntary patients. I also continued to evaluate patients in the emergency room as part of the call group for the last 8 years.

I specialize in mood and anxiety disorders, including depression, PTSD, and perinatal mental health, with a clinical focus on improving access to quality mental healthcare for historically marginalized and/or minoritized communities. I emphasize the importance of truly listening, so patients feel seen and heard. I work collaboratively with my patients to identify their main concerns and to build a treatment plan that feels right for them. I believe treatment should be a shared process in which the patient is empowered and supported in their mental health journey. Taking a "less is more" approach to medication, I focus on minimizing prescriptions while still addressing all of a patient's needs. My goal is to help patients eventually rely more on therapeutic skills than medication. I view treatment as a partnership, balancing my expertise in psychiatry with each patient's lived experience.

I bring over a decade of experience in outpatient psychiatric care, with prior roles providing treatment to juveniles in detention and adults in jail and prison systems across West Virginia. I completed my medical degree at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University and trained in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry at West Virginia University.

I focus on two main approaches to mental health treatment: medication management and psychotherapy. Appointments focus on a mix of interactions aimed at tailoring each patient's specific medication needs as well as promoting mental health wellness through different types of evidence-based therapy techniques including mindfulness, CBT, CPT, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I work together with patients to develop a plan that fits each patient's individual needs. Initial appointments focus on identifying and treating primary concerns, and then later appointments center on building upon the therapeutic relationship to increase self-awareness, promote emotional insight, and secure lasting positive mental health changes.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist that specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and ADHD. I have also worked extensively with patients that have experienced sexual trauma in their past and patients struggling with substance and alcohol use addictions. I completed medical school at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and then went on to complete psychiatry residency training at Naval Medical Center San Diego.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Cigna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with depression?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
