I focus on using my extensive medication knowledge to help treat an array of psychiatric disorders. Beyond medication management, I also work on a holistic approach to psychiatry, including working with the patient to get the proper therapy services when clinically indicated. During the initial interview, a thorough assessment is done, including any medical and psychiatric history, medications you may be currently taking, and supplements before any medication is dispensed. My interests include depression, anxiety, ADHD, obsessive compulsive and related disorders, transgender patients on hormone therapies and post-surgical transition. I also have an extensive interest in medical illnesses with a psychiatric component, such as cancer patients, transplant, HIV, and many others alike.

I am a board-certified Staff Psychiatrist at Talkiatry. I completed my residency at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus, New Jersey, where I excelled in leadership and knowledge, becoming Chief Resident in just my third year at the busiest outpatient behavioral health clinic in New Jersey. Upon completion of my third year, I went on to become Chief Academic Resident of my program, which allowed me to impart my knowledge of psychiatry to younger psychiatrists in training. After completing my residency in General Psychiatry, I completed a fellowship in the prestigious Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, based primarily out of the Beth Israel location. During this fellowship I studied Consultation-liaison psychiatry, also known as psychosomatic medicine, an exciting subspecialty of psychiatry that focuses on the care of patients with comorbid psychiatric and general medical conditions. Consultation-liaison psychiatry deals with the understanding and advancement of medical science, education, and the provision of healthcare for medically ill and complex patients.

I am a psychiatrist interested in the mind-body connection in overall emotional and mental well-being. I have worked extensively with medically complex patients, including a special focus in psycho-oncology with cancer patients. I like to integrate therapy modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, mindfulness and meditation with medication management to optimize a patient's mental health.

I am double board-certified in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry and have been practicing for over 7 years. Before Talkiatry, I worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. I also worked as an Assistant Professor and was Director of Emergency Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. I have presented nationally at the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and written a book chapter about psycho-oncology.

I attended medical school at John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. I then completed an Adult Psychiatry residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, followed by a Consultation-Liaison fellowship at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.

Empathy forms the core of my approach to treating patients. Working with trauma survivors, I believe that the goal is not to dwell on "the story," because patients often need time to reconstruct an accurate history. Rather, helping patients manage the challenge of living in the present moment is a worthy goal. I have remained dedicated to the dual path I've followed for years: excellence in Biological Psychiatry and psychology.

I am a board certified psychiatrist, Diplomate of The American Board of Addiction Medicine, and Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. I trained at the Downstate School of Medicine in Brooklyn, NY, completed my internship at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and my residency in Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles. I have been named one of the Best Doctors in America for the treatment of mood disorders and one of the Best Doctors in California.

Over 30 years, I have worked in inpatient and outpatient settings, taught 3rd-year residents psychopharmacology in the Mood Disorder clinic I created, consulted in the prison system, and volunteered in the aftermath of natural disasters. I joined the New Mexico Medical Reserve Corps and was active in the Corps while working in my private practice. When I returned to California in 2008, I continued to study the effects of trauma and received specialized training in EMDR and Dialectic Behavior Therapy. In addition, I studied substance abuse problems and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

My approach is to treat primarily through psychotherapy and behavioral change, with medication management serving as an important (and often essential) adjuvant to optimizing mental health. My specialty is providing behaviorally oriented trauma-informed care, and I am experienced in managing a multitude of mental health conditions. I tend to have a very casual engagement style, so expect a frank but open conversation during our first meetings. Following that initial screening, anticipate a candid discussion about my approach to your condition and an initial treatment plan. Please feel free to bring up any questions or concerns at any time during this process, and note-taking is highly encouraged!

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and completed my training at the University of Washington, where I received additional certifications in Psychotherapy and Community Psychiatry. Prior to joining Talkiatry, I spent years serving the mental health needs of underserved communities as well as our Veteran population.

I believe in a collaborative approach to treatment, emphasizing active listening, compassion, and respect. I strive to create a warm, supportive environment where patients feel safe and empowered to speak openly without fear of judgment. My treatment process is holistic, considering physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors. I evaluate diet, physical activity, sleep habits, and thought patterns alongside medication needs. I prioritize using the lowest effective dose of medication to meet treatment goals while supporting the patient's overall well-being.

I provide a therapeutic medication management visit, which incorporates therapeutic techniques tailored to the individual patient's needs while adjusting medication doses. My goal is to help patients manage their symptoms while working towards, over time, uncovering the root causes. This comprehensive process helps to empower my patients and provides hope and acceptance of their psychiatric challenges. If indicated, I may believe that additional therapy is also needed and recommend that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome.

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry and have completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I attended medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine and completed my training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, followed by Tulane University School of Medicine, where I was a chief resident. I have worked in hospital systems, private practice, and most recently telemedicine.

When not practicing, I enjoy all things water, cooking, and spending time with my daughter and dog.

I believe that each person's "best self" is unique and that mental health care should meet individuals where they are. I emphasize a collaborative, client-centered approach, always keeping the individual's goals at the heart of care. I am dedicated to helping clients identify and overcome the symptoms and stressors that interfere with their well-being, and I work to dismantle limiting beliefs or labels that may have been placed on them. By taking the time to understand each person's challenges and aspirations, I help clients find sustainable, holistic paths to wellness. My care is grounded in empathy, respect, and a deep commitment to supporting each person's journey toward a fulfilling and balanced life. Since shifting my focus to psychiatric mental health in 2022, I have helped individuals improve their quality of life through medication management for mood disorders, PTSD, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health conditions.

I grew up in a rural community, where I learned the value of helping others achieve their best selves to support overall community health and well-being. I earned my undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Nebraska and completed my nursing education at Creighton University. I went on to earn a Master of Science in Nursing, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner and in Community Health, from Creighton University, and later completed a nursing practice degree at the University of Colorado with a focus on population and community health. I also hold a post-graduate certification in psychiatric mental health from Washburn University. I practiced family medicine for 18 years before transitioning to psychiatric mental health in 2022, and my background in both physical and mental health gives me a holistic perspective on care.

I continue to live in a rural community with my family and remain committed to helping people become their best selves.

I foster a warm, collaborative environment where patients and families feel supported and understood. I emphasize open communication and work closely with patients to define meaningful, realistic treatment goals. My holistic, family-centered approach integrates medication management, therapy, and psychoeducation with a deep commitment to cultural sensitivity and compassionate care. I begin by learning each patient's personal story, clinical history, and goals through a comprehensive evaluation, then create individualized, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to each child's unique needs and family context. I continuously collaborate with patients, families, and care teams to ensure treatment remains effective, combining psychotherapy, medication management, and coordination with other providers and resources.

I am board-certified in both Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and General Psychiatry, with over 20 years of clinical experience. I earned my M.D. from Loyola University Medical Center, where I also completed my residency in Adult Psychiatry, and pursued fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Northwestern University's Children's Memorial Hospital. I pride myself on my ability to empathize with my patients and meet them exactly where they are in their journey. I believe that trust is the foundation of the therapeutic relationship and work diligently to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where patients feel safe, heard, and respected. In the initial evaluation, I focus on gathering comprehensive information to form a complete understanding of each patient's unique background and needs. From there, I develop an individualized treatment plan that aligns with the patient's prioritized goals. Each session begins from that foundation, allowing me to support patients at their own pace as trust deepens and progress unfolds.

I have worked in the mental health field for over 30 years following the completion of my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Suffolk University in Boston. I began my career as a mental health technician in a geriatric residential program and later pursued additional education in nursing, earning an Associate Degree in Nursing from Quincy College, a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from South University, and a Master's in Nursing from Eastern Kentucky University. Over the years, I have held diverse roles in adult and children's case management, residential and intensive outpatient programs, inpatient psychiatric care, and crisis stabilization. I have provided care in both inpatient and outpatient settings as well as through hospital consult services across the country.

Rather than focus primarily on illness or problems, my approach is to first evaluate patients comprehensively, then utilize what's learned from this to treat and empower them to make and then practice choices that lead to improved health and well-being, using an integrative model that recognizes that mental, physical, social, and spiritual health are one.

I am American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology certified and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. A skilled psychopharmacologist and psychotherapist, I have over 30 years' experience successfully helping people overcome a diverse range of emotional, psychiatric, and addiction challenges.

I was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and am a graduate of Augustana College. I obtained my MD at the USD School of Medicine. My residency was at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, where I was trained in both psychotherapy and biological management of psychiatric challenges. Following residency training, I continued to work with UAMS and the State of Arkansas in research and program development, focusing on implementing and then teaching novel strengths-focused care for people with severe mental illness for the first 12 years of my career. Later, I moved with my wife and three children to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and have since been in clinical practice and leadership roles in inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth psychiatric care settings.

I believe in client-centered care, where clients get a say in their treatment in order to help make them feel their best. I truly believe that therapy is a crucial part of successfully treating any mental health diagnosis, in combination with medication management when warranted. I enjoy treating a variety of mental health diagnoses including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, and various psychotic disorders. I also like to add mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to my medication management appointments to help individuals receive effective, quality care.

I am a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and have been practicing since 2018, with experience working with individuals of all ages. Prior to becoming a PMHNP, I worked as a registered nurse in critical care and psychiatry. As a PMHNP, I have experience working on inpatient adult and geriatric psychiatric units, as well as providing psychiatric evaluations and consultations to individuals on medical units and emergency rooms at hospitals. I am very experienced working in outpatient settings managing various psychiatric diagnoses, and have also helped manage individuals in long term care facilities and assisted living facilities. I graduated with my Master's of Science in Nursing from Kent State University and am board certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurse Credentialing Center.

I am a dually boarded Psychiatric Mental Health and Family nurse practitioner with over ten years of clinical experience. I am dedicated to providing culturally competent and evidence-based medication management and psychotherapy to assist individuals in achieving their goals to live their best life. I believe in holistic treatment of individuals, and focus on the individual's overall well-being, including how they are functioning socially and professionally. In addition to medication and psychotherapy, I am a proponent of incorporating research-supported alternative modalities, including dietary changes, exercise, social interaction, and yoga. I also advocate for forest bathing ("shinrin-yoku"), a practice of spending time in nature that yields both medical and mental health benefits as discovered in research trials from around the world. As a professionally trained cellist, I also frequently incorporate art and music into appointments and treatment plans with patients. My goal for all my patients is to improve all facets of a person's life with treatment. I am an LGBTQ+ affirming provider and have extensive experience working with diverse populations.

New patients should know that the initial appointment will consist of obtaining their social history in addition to their medical history. This is an important part of establishing a therapeutic relationship in addition to obtaining health information to use in formulating treatment plans. A person's identity and life experiences are a significant influence on a person's health and well-being, and I believe in discussing these experiences in order to best understand a patient's background and incorporate that into their care. Patients are encouraged to write down any questions they may have prior to the appointment, as well as any significant points they want to discuss, as we may forget to address these points without a prompt from the provider.

I encourage patients to actively participate in their care and firmly believe in a patient's right to autonomy and agency. This patient-centered approach empowers patients to help guide treatment plans that best fit the patient's needs and abilities at any given time. Patients are also encouraged to discuss any concerns about medications or treatment, particularly if there are concerns about side effects. I work collaboratively with patients to determine appropriate and preferred treatment plans, including medication and therapy. I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as the primary therapy modality, in conjunction with existential therapy, depending on the patient's needs and preferences. I prefer to allow patients flexibility in their treatment, so the process may look less structured depending on the immediate needs of the patient. Other times, particularly while working through a specific problem in therapy, appointment agendas may be planned out for several weeks. If at any time a need arises to deviate from a preplanned appointment agenda, patients are encouraged to discuss this at the beginning of the appointment. Above all, patients' needs will guide the agenda.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Blue Cross Blue Shield?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with PTSD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
