I work with patients to meet the goals that matter to them. I believe that feeling heard and being understood are key factors in a successful treatment relationship. I have worked extensively with patients dealing with trauma from childhood abuse, assaults, combat, and accidents. I also have a lot of experience treating depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and personality disorders.
I have been working in telehealth since 2018. After completing my training, I worked in private practice and in various roles for the Department of Veterans Affairs. I most enjoy working in the clinic because of the long-term follow-up.
I enjoy my work and include psychotherapy in my appointments. I offer medication options to treat symptoms but also work with patients to examine behaviors and defenses that may be contributing to their problems. For patients who would benefit from more extensive psychotherapy, I may refer them to a therapist and work collaboratively with that therapist. I start off with a thorough evaluation to make a diagnosis, then work with patients to determine their treatment goals and develop a treatment plan to meet those goals.

I start by explaining my overall approach to medication management and my goal of helping my patients live a better life free of disability. I conduct a detailed evaluation of your concerns, your experiences, and your priorities in treatment, and I develop a unique treatment plan based on your unique needs. I emphasize positive developments over the course of our work together and make sure you always have a chance to discuss any questions or concerns you want me to know and answer. I highly value my patients trusting me to listen and respect them, as well as in my clinical skills. I may be the medical expert, but my patients and I are partners working together in the process of achieving better health and functionality so they can live their best lives.

Marnie Stefan, MD
I am deeply committed to patient-centered care, adapting my role to the individual needs of each patient. I believe in treating the whole person, rather than just a diagnosis, recognizing that each patient has unique psychosocial circumstances. I have a strong foundation in psychotherapeutic interventions and am dedicated to providing engaging, compassionate, and meaningful therapy in every patient interaction.
Patients meeting me for the first time can expect a comprehensive and holistic evaluation that considers their symptoms, personal history, and life circumstances. I take the time to build strong therapeutic relationships, fostering a caring and engaging environment where patients feel understood and supported. Whether through telemedicine or in-person care, I prioritize personalized treatment plans that integrate medication management and psychotherapy, ensuring the highest quality of care tailored to each patient's needs.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, I am fluent in both English and Spanish.

Marsha Wheatley, MD
What has motivated me over the course of my career as a caregiver? I am a native Houstonian who grew up in a working-class community. Through curiosity and hard work, I was able to attend a university that included people of vastly different life experiences. I was molded by both communities to appreciate the commonalities of humanity. That broad exposure extended my empathetic spectrum to grasp the needs of the American diaspora.
I use a biopsychosocial approach to evaluate the patient. I gather patient history with a mindset that considers the neuroscience that chemically shapes mood, thoughts, and behavior. I am able to uncover factors that can inhibit psychological growth and development. I have experience in seeing how the social conditions of the œthen can influence the resiliency of the œnow. I appreciate, and am proficient in, advances in technology, but prioritize the analog relationship between doctor and patient.
Meeting people where they are. It is an old trope, but describes how one allows a patient to set the path forward. An open-ended interview is conducted with an open mind towards resolution. When being evaluated and treated by me, a patient can expect to be met in a cordial but professional manner. Treatments are discussed and considered based on the mental state of the patient and the clinical efficacy and scientific evidence of benefit. The patient is invited to ask questions and consider whether they wish to pursue the suggested treatment plan.

Martha Coetzee, MD
I take a patient-centered, bio-psycho-social approach to care. I value open communication and actively encourage both positive and constructive feedback to guide treatment. I strive to create a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where patients feel heard, respected, and validated throughout their care. I prioritize building a strong therapeutic relationship, and I conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, gather collateral information when appropriate, and use baseline rating scales to understand patient concerns and goals. I collaborate with patients (and families if desired) to develop personalized treatment plans based on individual history, needs, and preferences, while tracking progress over time.
I am a board-certified Psychiatrist and Addiction Psychiatrist with extensive international training. I completed my medical education at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, followed by seven years of postgraduate residency across multiple specialties. After moving to the U.S. in 1994, I completed 27 months of fellowship training in forensic, addiction, and child & adolescent psychiatry. I have served as a visiting scientist and Research Assistant Professor and have broad experience treating adults, including uniformed personnel and those with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions. I recently retired from a full-time Chief Medical Officer role.
Find a psychiatrist in Tampa, FL

Online Psychiatry for Tampa Residents
You get matched with a psychiatrist licensed in Florida, then meet by video from home. Because your psychiatrist is licensed in Florida, you can be seen wherever you are in Tampa, not only where a local office happens to be.
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes, giving you time to talk through your symptoms, ask questions, and start building a treatment plan together. Follow-up visits usually run about 30 minutes, so you can check in, review how you feel, and adjust the plan as needed. Online psychiatry means you set up visits around work, school, or caregiving instead of around a commute.
What a Psychiatrist Can Help With
Talkiatry psychiatrists treat a wide range of conditions and take time to understand what you are dealing with before recommending anything. Common reasons Tampa residents reach out include:
- Anxiety, including constant worry, panic, and anxiety that gets in the way of daily life
- Depression, including low mood, loss of interest, and trouble functioning
- ADHD, including trouble focusing, restlessness, and follow-through that feels out of reach
Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can prescribe and manage medication when it fits your situation. Medication is one possible part of a plan, not the automatic result of a visit. Depending on your needs and availability, therapy may also be part of your care. Your psychiatrist listens, evaluates, and personalizes the plan to you.
Does Insurance Cover a Psychiatrist in Tampa?
Talkiatry is in-network with major insurers, and your coverage is verified during the free assessment before you schedule a visit. That way you know where you stand before your first appointment. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan, so it helps to confirm the details with your insurance company.
Mental Health Care in Tampa
Finding local psychiatric care in Florida can take longer than it should. Florida has 239 designated mental health professional shortage areas covering about 9.87 million people, and only about 24.9% of the need for psychiatric care is being met (according to KFF as of 12/31/25). For you, that gap often shows up as long waits and few nearby openings. Online psychiatry helps by connecting you with a licensed psychiatrist across Florida, rather than limiting your options to the providers in your immediate area.
