I am board-certified in adult psychiatry. My approach is client-centered, individualized, and collaborative. I focus on building a strong therapeutic alliance with each client to work towards achieving enhanced functioning and meaning in their lives. I work with individuals experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression and other mood concerns, bipolar spectrum illnesses, OCD, PTSD, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders. Though I specialize in medication management, I believe in an integrative and comprehensive treatment program that incorporates multiple aspects of an individual's health and wellness. Along with discussing physical health concerns, diet, exercise, personal connection, and stress management, I incorporate various therapeutic modalities, including CBT, DBT, ACT, and mindfulness, into my work. In some instances, I may recommend more intensive psychotherapy with a collaborating therapist in order to help facilitate the best care possible.

I received my medical degree from Rush Medical College and also hold a graduate degree in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Following medical school, I completed my residency in psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine. During my final year of residency, I served as chief resident at Grady Memorial Hospital. Prior to joining Talkiatry, I was an assistant professor at Emory University Department of Psychiatry, where I worked as an attending psychiatrist at Grady Behavioral Health. While at Grady, I worked primarily as a community psychiatrist with a focus on working with individuals experiencing psychosis, and I also frequently worked on the inpatient psychiatry service. As an Emory faculty member, teaching and mentorship were an especially meaningful part of my work.

I am board certified in adult psychiatry and have been practicing for over 36 years. My practice has focused primarily on medication management within the context of a supportive psychotherapeutic relationship. I also utilize cognitive behavioral techniques. If a patient requires more intensive psychotherapy, I refer them to a therapist and collaborate with that therapist. I have experience treating Depressive Disorders, PTSD, Panic Disorder, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and many other conditions. I feel my personal strengths include my inquisitiveness, scientific curiosity, and my desire to understand my patients better.

I was born in Hungary, just a few months before the Hungarian Revolution against the Soviets broke out in 1956. My family and I fled under difficult circumstances and immigrated to the United States. I grew up in New York City, attended The Bronx High School of Science, and went on to Columbia University for my B.A., where I took a double major in chemistry and music. After obtaining my M.D. from S.U.N.Y. in Syracuse, I returned to New York City for residency and fellowship training. During this time I won the Bendheim Fellowship Award at Cohen Children's Medical Center for a research study that examined the effects of background music on the academic performance of children with ADHD.

My current areas of interest include adult ADHD, psychiatric and medical co-morbidities, and the LGBTQ population.

My practice focuses on medication management, which I offer in conjunction with supportive therapy in 30-minute follow-up appointments. I work collaboratively with patients to develop individualized treatment plans that may include medication management, lifestyle interventions, and stress reduction techniques. I have a wealth of knowledge and experience in treating a diverse range of psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder, anxiety, bipolar spectrum disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorders. I believe that additional therapy may be necessary and ask that patients bring a therapist into their care team to provide the best outcome.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and have been practicing for over eight years. I completed my Bachelor's degree at the University of Bristol in my native United Kingdom, attended Saint George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, and completed my residency training in psychiatry at New York Medical College Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. As chief resident, I learned to balance clinical experience with organizational duties and scholarly activities. More recently, I have been an inpatient clinical psychiatrist at Banner University Medical Center in Arizona and have served as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona for four years. I have played a crucial role both clinically and as part of multi-disciplinary treatment teams.

I am originally from Edinburgh, Scotland. My studies and training have taken me on a journey from the United Kingdom and the Caribbean to New York City and Arizona. I draw on my exposure to diverse patient populations from around the world to inform my clinical skills and treatment plans.

I take great pride in forming meaningful connections with my patients and listening to their concerns. I rely on evidence-based treatments to guide pharmacotherapy decisions, and in addition to medication management, I incorporate supportive psychotherapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy techniques in my visits. When appropriate, I will refer patients for further psychotherapy and collaborate with therapists to provide more comprehensive care. I believe in building a strong therapeutic relationship that empowers patients to join in a collaborative discussion for optimizing their individual treatment plans and reaching their defined goals.

I completed my medical training at the University of Georgia/Augusta University Medical Partnership. While in medical school, I received a Master of Business Administration at the University of Georgia. I then moved to North Carolina to complete my psychiatric residency training at the Brody School of Medicine/ECU Health Medical Center. During my training, I gained extensive clinical experience working with adults and veterans in psychiatric inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings. I also served as a chief resident of the psychiatry program and published several case studies.

I will conduct a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and take time to understand each patient's individual concerns, mental health goals, and history.

I use a practical and realistic approach with patients to assist them in identifying small, attainable goals and then motivating them to achieve those goals. I prefer to work with adults and relish the opportunity to work with patients who are highly motivated for change.

I completed medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995. I then completed a residency in general psychiatry at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a fellowship in forensic psychiatry also at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia from 1995–2000. I spent ten years practicing forensic psychiatry at a state hospital in Atlanta. I then decided that I wanted to travel and spent eighteen months as a locum tenens psychiatrist primarily practicing in New England. During this time, I met my future husband and we decided together that we eventually wanted to live in the New England area. In 2013, I officially became a telepsychiatrist, which eventually provided me with the opportunity to move to Rhode Island and practice out of the home my husband and I bought there. I initially saw patients via telepsychiatry at a community mental health center in rural Georgia and later took a position as a remote consultant telepsychiatrist at Acadia Hospital in Bangor, Maine.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from United Healthcare?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with anxiety?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
