I strive to create a warm, collaborative, and non-judgmental environment where patients feel truly heard and supported. I value whole-person care, addressing not only mental and emotional health, but also physical and spiritual well-being. I believe in partnering with patients to create treatment plans that reflect their values, goals, and strengths. My approach emphasizes accessibility, practicality, and empowerment, providing patients with tools they can integrate into daily life. I have a special clinical interest in lifestyle and integrative psychiatry, particularly the role of nutrition, exercise, sleep, and mind-body practices in supporting mental health.

I begin with a thorough, compassionate evaluation, taking into account both medical and psychiatric history as well as personal goals. I develop personalized treatment plans that may include a blend of medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle approaches. I encourage small, sustainable steps in areas such as nutrition, sleep, movement, and stress management, with the goal of not only reducing symptoms but also building resilience and long-term wellness.

I earned my medical degree from Loma Linda University and completed my psychiatry residency at the University of Miami. I have experience working in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, caring for individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of clinical needs.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in adult psychiatry. My practice focuses primarily on medication management but often incorporates aspects of supportive, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioral therapies into my 30-minute follow-up visits. I also strongly believe in working in conjunction with therapists to achieve the best possible outcomes for my patients. I feel it is important to create strong therapeutic relationships with my patients in order to help them achieve their treatment goals.

I received my undergraduate degrees in Human Biology and Spanish from Michigan State University. I then completed my medical education and a master's degree in medical humanities and bioethics at Northwestern University, and completed my adult psychiatry residency at the University of Washington. I have authored papers in medical education and LGBTQ advocacy.

I now live in Pennsylvania with my husband, Kevin, and three dogs: Taquito, Fergie, and Mimi. While I treat adults of all backgrounds, I have a particular interest in working with young adults, students, and LGBTQ individuals.

I am a dedicated, board-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with dual certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I am deeply passionate about helping others and take a holistic, evidence-based approach to mental healthcare, empowering patients to live life to their fullest potential. My practice focuses on medication management and supportive therapy, offering 30-minute follow-up sessions. When additional therapy is needed, I recommend including a therapist in the care team to ensure the best possible outcomes. I strongly believe in prioritizing client involvement and fostering interprofessional collaboration.

I have extensive experience in both outpatient and inpatient settings, working with adults and children facing a wide range of mental health conditions, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, and psychotic disorders.

Your mental health journey is unique, and I am here to listen with compassion and without judgment. All conversations are confidential, and my goal is to create a safe, welcoming space where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and concerns. During your initial appointment, I will review your mental health history, current symptoms, lifestyle factors, and any previous treatments to gain a comprehensive understanding of your needs. Together, we will develop a personalized treatment plan that may include therapy, medication, or other supportive strategies. I value shared decision-making, ensuring your input is considered at every step of the process. If medication is part of your treatment, I will clearly explain its benefits, potential side effects, and how your progress will be monitored. Adjustments can be made as needed to achieve the best possible outcome. Healing takes time, and I am committed to supporting you throughout the process. Follow-up appointments are essential for tracking progress, making necessary adjustments, and ensuring you receive the care you need.

My approach is to treat primarily through psychotherapy and behavioral change, with medication management serving as an important (and often essential) adjuvant to optimizing mental health. My specialty is providing behaviorally oriented trauma-informed care, and I am experienced in managing a multitude of mental health conditions. I tend to have a very casual engagement style, so expect a frank but open conversation during our first meetings. Following that initial screening, anticipate a candid discussion about my approach to your condition and an initial treatment plan. Please feel free to bring up any questions or concerns at any time during this process, and note-taking is highly encouraged!

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and completed my training at the University of Washington, where I received additional certifications in Psychotherapy and Community Psychiatry. Prior to joining Talkiatry, I spent years serving the mental health needs of underserved communities as well as our Veteran population.

I believe in patient-centered care built on trust, collaboration, and respect for each individual's life story. I integrate medication management with therapeutic techniques and create a safe, inclusive space that is trauma-informed and aligned with each patient's values. I emphasize genuine connection and strive to help clients explore root causes of distress, not just manage symptoms. I begin with a comprehensive, collaborative assessment of each patient's medical, psychiatric, and psychosocial history, and I partner with patients to develop flexible, personalized treatment plans that support holistic mental health. My approach combines psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions, continuously adjusting plans based on feedback and progress.

I am a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with over a decade of experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I hold a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Colorado Denver, an MSN from Vanderbilt University, and a BS from Boston University. Rather than focus primarily on illness or problems, my approach is to first evaluate patients comprehensively, then utilize what's learned from this to treat and empower them to make and then practice choices that lead to improved health and well-being, using an integrative model that recognizes that mental, physical, social, and spiritual health are one.

I am American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology certified and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. A skilled psychopharmacologist and psychotherapist, I have over 30 years' experience successfully helping people overcome a diverse range of emotional, psychiatric, and addiction challenges.

I was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and am a graduate of Augustana College. I obtained my MD at the USD School of Medicine. My residency was at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, where I was trained in both psychotherapy and biological management of psychiatric challenges. Following residency training, I continued to work with UAMS and the State of Arkansas in research and program development, focusing on implementing and then teaching novel strengths-focused care for people with severe mental illness for the first 12 years of my career. Later, I moved with my wife and three children to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and have since been in clinical practice and leadership roles in inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth psychiatric care settings.

Empathy forms the core of my approach to treating patients. Working with trauma survivors, I believe that the goal is not to dwell on "the story," because patients often need time to reconstruct an accurate history. Rather, helping patients manage the challenge of living in the present moment is a worthy goal. I have remained dedicated to the dual path I've followed for years: excellence in Biological Psychiatry and psychology.

I am a board certified psychiatrist, Diplomate of The American Board of Addiction Medicine, and Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. I trained at the Downstate School of Medicine in Brooklyn, NY, completed my internship at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and my residency in Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles. I have been named one of the Best Doctors in America for the treatment of mood disorders and one of the Best Doctors in California.

Over 30 years, I have worked in inpatient and outpatient settings, taught 3rd-year residents psychopharmacology in the Mood Disorder clinic I created, consulted in the prison system, and volunteered in the aftermath of natural disasters. I joined the New Mexico Medical Reserve Corps and was active in the Corps while working in my private practice. When I returned to California in 2008, I continued to study the effects of trauma and received specialized training in EMDR and Dialectic Behavior Therapy. In addition, I studied substance abuse problems and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist with over 14 years of experience, during which time I primarily treated active-duty US Navy sailors, their family members, and military retirees in the outpatient setting. My practice focuses on medication management in addition to supportive and cognitive-behavioral therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. I am a strong advocate of multiple treatment modalities and, in certain situations, may suggest that therapy and/or regular physical exercise be included in your treatment plan to provide the best outcome.

I received my B.S. in Physics from the United States Naval Academy. After serving as an Intelligence Officer in the Navy for eight years, I transitioned to medicine and earned my medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. After completing an intern year in Family Medicine, I completed residency training in Psychiatry at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA, where I remained on staff for the next ten years and was primarily involved in resident training and education. I held academic appointments at the Uniformed Services University and Eastern Virginia Medical School and served as the Psychiatry Residency Program Director for six years. I served my final four years in uniform running the behavioral health department at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA, and recently retired from the Navy after a 30-year career.

I have extensive experience in outpatient psychiatric care. In addition to the full spectrum of mood and anxiety disorders, I have treated a very large number of patients with PTSD stemming from combat, natural disasters, and sexual trauma. I believe that, like my service to the country, working alongside others in their journey to better mental health is an incredible privilege.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Cigna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
