I integrate my knowledge of psychiatry and primary care into evidence-based medication management strategies. I also possess a good working knowledge of alternative treatments and how to integrate them into more traditional approaches. When needed to enhance patient care outcomes, I frequently work collaboratively with psychotherapists, primary care providers, and/or medical specialists. I currently focus on managing depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, ADHD, somatic disorders, OCD, and bipolar disorders.

I am board certified as both a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and an Adult Nurse Practitioner. My career has spanned 30 years, with the last 17 years devoted exclusively to psychiatry. I have significant experience working with diverse groups, including urban and rural populations across socioeconomic spectrums, professionals and college students on all levels, members of the LGBTQ community, individuals confronting life stage transitions, and people living with chronic medical conditions.

My psychotherapeutic methods are diverse and evolve to meet collaboratively developed treatment goals. My interaction style is always empathic and respectful but can range from comforting and supportive to more directive and therapeutically confrontational strategies to maximize treatment goals, often with significant doses of humor throughout the therapeutic relationship.

I take a team-based, individualized approach to care. I believe in the importance of education, open communication, and empowering patients in their treatment journey. I emphasize a holistic perspective, incorporating medication management, therapy, and lifestyle modifications. I prioritize a trauma-informed approach, recognizing the significant role trauma plays in mental health, and I integrate mindfulness techniques, motivational interviewing, and lifestyle changes to support overall well-being. I am passionate about mental health advocacy, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. By fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, I help patients build resilience and achieve their mental health goals.

I am a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with a strong background in treating patients across the mental health spectrum. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Illinois State University and began my career in a women's residential facility specializing in mood disorders, eating disorders, and PTSD. I then transitioned to inpatient adolescent psychiatry, where I became a charge nurse and obtained my Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification (PMH-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Inspired by my passion for mental health, I pursued my master's degree at the University of St. Francis to become a PMHNP. I have extensive experience treating patients at all levels of care, including inpatient, PHP/IOP, and outpatient settings. I later transitioned to telehealth, providing medication management to college students.

I pride myself on creating a non-judgmental and healing environment that allows for self-discovery and assists clients in identifying their authentic selves. I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma (including Narcissistic Abuse), and grief. I believe in fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship where clients feel empowered to set and achieve meaningful goals. From a holistic perspective, I incorporate techniques such as identifying strengths, mindfulness, polyvagal techniques, challenging core belief systems, early childhood, and attachment types to heal the mind, body, and spirit. I have experience in many methods and techniques, ensuring that my approach integrates evidence-based practices with experiential techniques which are tailored to each client's unique needs to allow for nervous system regulation and a sense of safety within themselves.

I hold a Master's in Social Work from the University of Nebraska-Omaha (2008) and am licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), with 16 years of experience in the mental health field.

When not working with clients, I enjoy being outdoors, reading, and spending time with my husband, son, and two dogs.

I believe in a mind-body interconnection, and strive to address both aspects to provide truly holistic care. I am passionate about treating ADHD, and utilize medications plus skill building in my sessions to help my patients maximize their potential. My extensive experience also includes treating mood disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and OCD. I work in partnership with patients to find a treatment plan that will be effective, while also being sensitive to financial or insurance coverage factors that may impact care.

I am a double board certified psychiatrist in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Following completion of my training, I spent the next 10 years fulfilling my passion for indigent care of children, working in a community mental health center. I went on to complete additional training in Functional Medicine, with the goal of offering patients greater insight into the physical factors contributing to their symptoms. I have also trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and encourage mindfulness as a healing technique along with medication management. Over the following 10 years, I treated a broad range of patients in a private practice setting, including children and adults.

I view each patient and their caregiver's circumstance as unique. I take a holistic and collaborative approach to help patients understand their options. While the focus may be on psychoeducation and medication management with supportive and psychodynamic therapeutic interventions, there may be a need for additional therapy, and I may ask that a therapist be added to the treatment team. I work towards establishing a meaningful, trusting relationship.

I am double board certified in General Psychiatry as well as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I have worked in various settings with culturally diverse populations, with a primary focus on caring for children in outpatient programs. At the heart of my clinical approach is a strong emphasis on establishing trust, building a therapeutic relationship to help patients achieve their goals, and helping people better understand their brain, its strengths, and vulnerabilities and how to use assessment and training to maximize everyone's unique emotional and cognitive capacity. My practice focuses on medication management. Typically, I offer this in conjunction with supportive or emotionally focused therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. Occasionally I may believe that additional therapy is also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome. I believe that every patient is unique and every situation different. I seek to bring a wealth of experience to bear but, above all, to do so with a personalized and compassionate focus on what will help everyone specifically, practically, effectively, and efficiently. I am especially happy to help people new to emotional help understand the value of different approaches.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist with a strong background in neuroscience and psychopharmacology who has been in practice for over 25 years. I received my medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School and went on to complete my residency in psychiatry at MGH in Boston. After completing training, I have worked in every setting from a Community Mental Health Center in rural VT, a General Hospital Department of Psychiatry in Waterbury CT, and a private psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts. I have held academic clinical appointments at Dartmouth, Yale, and Harvard and provided supervision to medical students, residents, APRNs, Social Workers, and Mental Health Clinicians. In addition to my direct clinical work, I have extensive experience with value-based care having worked with the behavioral divisions of CIGNA Behavioral Health, Optum Behavioral Health, and MCG. I have also been involved in the latest approaches made possible in mental health by the growth of direct-to-consumer services as part of digital transformation.

I use an integrative approach to health in my psychiatric practice, combining evidence-based concepts in neurobiology with psychological, social, and spiritual/existential worldviews to understand and treat every patient. My primary practice is medication management, and I also integrate elements of psychotherapy into my work, typically within 30-minute follow-up visits. In addition to medication and psychotherapy, I incorporate wellness tools into visits, such as mindfulness exercises and sleep management strategies. If I believe that additional psychotherapy is needed, I will recommend that you add a therapist to your care team. My primary focus is working with adults with mood and anxiety disorders, trauma symptoms, ADHD, and problems with sleep. I enjoy working with people facing life transitions, especially older adults and women who are struggling with mental health challenges related to pregnancy and post-partum health. I have extensive experience working with people from many stages of life, with diverse world views and cultural backgrounds. I have always had an inclusive practice and welcome people who identify as LBGTQIA+.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from United Healthcare?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with depression?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
