I start by explaining my overall approach to medication management and my goal of helping my patients live a better life free of disability. I conduct a detailed evaluation of your concerns, your experiences, and your priorities in treatment, and I develop a unique treatment plan based on your unique needs. I emphasize positive developments over the course of our work together and make sure you always have a chance to discuss any questions or concerns you want me to know and answer. I highly value my patients trusting me to listen and respect them, as well as in my clinical skills. I work hard at helping my patients understand my approach to treatment, and what is happening along the way and why. I may be the medical expert, but my patients and I are partners working together in the process of achieving better health and functionality so they can live their best lives.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with over ten years of experience in adult psychiatry, addiction medication, pregnancy and post-partum care, complex medical consultation, and military health. I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy as well as evidenced-based medication management, and I have extensive experience working with culturally diverse populations.

I am board-certified in Psychiatry with 15 years of experience in outpatient clinical psychiatry. My focus is primarily on medication management, but I do incorporate brief cognitive behavioral therapy and supportive therapy when appropriate. If more extensive psychotherapy is felt to be beneficial, I will recommend a therapist and collaborate with them for optimal care. Medication is felt to be an important tool for many in achieving wellness, and I encourage a holistic approach to improve outcomes. My hope is to provide relief and help people achieve their goals in their journey back to wellness.

I completed my medical degree at Louisiana State University in Shreveport and my residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, where I served as Chief Resident. After completing my residency, I worked primarily in outpatient clinics treating a wide range of mental health disorders. I have extensive experience treating major depressive disorder, a variety of anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and bipolar disorder, among others.

I work closely with patients, exploring past and current stressors and any relevant medical conditions to develop a comprehensive understanding of their individual needs. Recognizing the importance of cultural competency, I incorporate patients' unique backgrounds, beliefs, and core values into their care plans. In my practice, I employ supportive psychotherapy and mindfulness along with evidence-based medication management, utilizing the most current clinical guidelines and treatment modalities.

I am an adult psychiatrist at Talkiatry. I treat all adults, and my passion lies in providing accessible care for women facing challenges throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum and in reproductive psychiatry. My academic background is rooted in science, with an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Merced. I then pursued my medical doctorate at the Medical University of the Americas. Following medical school, I completed my psychiatry residency training. The first two years were spent at East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine, with a culmination of my last two years of residency at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to further specialize in women's mental health, which solidified my expertise in this vital area.

At Allegheny Health Network's Women's Behavioral Health clinic, I honed my skills in treating a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, and related issues, and served as a medical provider for their intensive perinatal/postpartum outpatient clinic. I also developed a deep understanding of perinatal mental health, supporting patients coping with perinatal loss and traumatic birthing experiences.

Along with discussing physical health concerns, diet, exercise, personal connection, and stress management, I incorporate various therapeutic modalities, including CBT, DBT, ACT, and mindfulness, into my work. I take great pride in forming meaningful connections with my patients and listening to their concerns. I rely on evidence-based treatments to guide pharmacotherapy decisions, and in addition to medication management, I incorporate supportive psychotherapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy techniques in my visits. When appropriate, I will refer patients for further psychotherapy and collaborate with therapists to provide more comprehensive care. I believe in building a strong therapeutic relationship that empowers patients to join in a collaborative discussion for optimizing their individual treatment plans and reaching their defined goals.

I completed my medical training at the University of Georgia/Augusta University Medical Partnership. While in medical school, I received a Master of Business Administration at the University of Georgia. I then moved to North Carolina to complete my psychiatric residency training at the Brody School of Medicine/ECU Health Medical Center. During my training, I gained extensive clinical experience working with adults and veterans in psychiatric inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings. I also served as a chief resident of the psychiatry program and published several case studies.

I will conduct a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and take time to understand each patient's individual concerns, mental health goals, and history.

I use a practical and realistic approach with patients to assist them in identifying small, attainable goals and then motivating them to achieve those goals. I prefer to work with adults and relish the opportunity to work with patients who are highly motivated for change.

I completed medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995. I then completed a residency in general psychiatry at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a fellowship in forensic psychiatry also at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia from 1995–2000. I spent ten years practicing forensic psychiatry at a state hospital in Atlanta. I then decided that I wanted to travel and spent eighteen months as a locum tenens psychiatrist primarily practicing in New England. During this time, I met my future husband and we decided together that we eventually wanted to live in the New England area. In 2013, I officially became a telepsychiatrist, which eventually provided me with the opportunity to move to Rhode Island and practice out of the home my husband and I bought there. I initially saw patients via telepsychiatry at a community mental health center in rural Georgia and later took a position as a remote consultant telepsychiatrist at Acadia Hospital in Bangor, Maine.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from Aetna?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with anxiety?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
